What next to launch on Virgin Media?

I have been told to expect the launch of Comedy Central Extra +1, Russia Today and Quest +1 soon on Virgin TV.

Also Sky Sports News HD should be with Virgin Media by the end of the year.

Can someone please tell me why all the fuss about Sky Sports News HD?

For most of the day its just 2 people talking and loads of adverts. Don't get me wrong, I do watch SSN from time to time but mainly as background noise while doing something else.

Unless they are drastically changing the format then there is little point having it in HD

and also, we have just had a influx of 10+ more hd channels, and people just want more.... i think bar a few, we have the hd channels worth having.

i can only think of espn american, hallmark, history, with possibly another 1 or 2 that we dont have, and even they will probably be around sooner than later. of course we know sky 1 is coming along with bbc 1 ....

vm are not bothering with the pointless, luxe hd comes to mind.

Any channel that has a lot of text on display will be greatly enhanced by HD, so all the text will look nice and crisp and very clear. The same goes for News, some may moan whats the point but it looks very nice.

I spoke to my insider about these new TIVO boxes and how much would these cost.

There is no official or internal information on anything yet but he said there could be one way to get away with the TIVO box charge and that would be to upgrade to VIP.

With work already starting on improved VIP package which we should start to hear something on within the next 2-3 months the improved package could be inline with the release of TIVO which was always predicted Nov this year.

So watch this space.

Ad in the Mirror this morning by Sky, suggests that the only way to get HD Sky Sports News will be to go with Sky. The ad is in the Sport section and has pizza as the prop and shows Virgin having two pieces and Sky having five - each piece = a HD channel

I'm not sure what the point of a HD Sports News channel is though. They only show clips and mostly studio shots with presenters. :confused:

I'd imagine that Sky will keep it exclusive for a bit... they must feel under attack at the moment! :D

If the channel goes premium only then it would probably be able to show more of the action on their other channels and by going HD they can show a similar quality to what subscribers could be switching to.

Though I agree it seems a bit pointless going HD

To be honest, I don't think I'll lose sleep if we don't get SSN HD, I got the channels I wanted (1 & 2) but, hey, I guess it'd be another channel to brag about if we did.
Am I correct in thinking September is being rumoured as the launch date for the Sky basics HD? Wanting Sky1 HD :D

its basically a barker channel for their own product.

having said that if you do watch it regularly the quality on SD is atrocious so it may useful to some.

I realise the answer to this will probably be just wait and see, but do you mean that the VIP package will include TIVO or I would get one if I Upgrade I only ask as I am already on VIP so should I downgrade (tempting considering the reduced levels of enhanced value recently) so that I can then upgrade again to get the TIVO box.

I think it's just good competition... they do have a common enemy in Freeview and Freesat, so in thoses areas will work "together".

They will never be bedfellows, but at least they seem to have dialogue :D

If you tune to them you can see what they are. :)

They are there to allow the network to be tested, and will be removed once those tests are complete. Then real channels (more than 5) can be added instead.

anyone know if we will get any more details on the Five HD EPG. On all the other channels it lists if the programme is HD or upscaled. On the 5ive one you don't get that detail so no idea if it is upscaled or not.

A: Some channels are only in some areas - Zing is only in Ex-ntl and Ex-Cable & Wireless areas but Ex-Telewest area have got RTE Radio.

Q: NOW THAT BSKYB HAS TOOK OVER VIRGIN MEDIA TELEVISION WILL ANY CHANNELS CLOSE ON VIRGIN TV?
A: Living HD will launch on Sky Digital. But us Virgin Media viewers will see some channels moving about as we will get Sky1 HD, Sky Sports HD 1, Sky Sports HD 2 and all of the Sky Movies HD Channels as well as Sky News HD, Sky Sports News HD, Sky Arts 1 HD and Sky Arts 2 HD all coming sometime before 2011.

They do, so far the only thing 5 show in HD is Home and Away, Neighbours and the odd movie. Both soaps are flagged as HD in the EPG.

Media Boy are you basing the launch date of ESPNA HD on a reply from CS? Or is this from your insider?

I've seen Square Eyes post the August 3rd ESPNA date on Nialli's blog too, and he has been bang on the money with regards the Sky HD channels launches.

thanks for that. I only watch CSI on 5ive and there is no mention on that in the EPG to say if it is in HD. Going on the above I will assume it is upscaled. Will check tomorrow to see what it says then.

yes its only upscaled apparently Five dont have an agreement to broadcast CSI in HD as CSI in HS is exclusive to Living HD.

Didn't it get posted on Nialli's blog due to Sqaure Eyes having read the email from VM CS?

More likely that 5 will upgrade their HD catalogue over time, remember even when Liviing HD started they still ran most things in upscalled as they have to get new versions of all their shows.

We can hope, Comedy Central has some of my favourite shows and I would love to see this go HD. The Channel is 25% owned by Sky so me may have to wait a while. But maybe the SD channels will go widescreen and maybe we might even get wisdecreen SD MTV channels as well?

October may be a good guess as that is when Sky is changing its HD pack how how their customers subsribe to them.
