I'd wait for the iPad 3.

April 2010 - iPad

March 2011 - iPad 2

I think it would be strange if no.3 wasn't released within the next few months...

For something as small as the iPad, I don't think I'd be too bothered about the screen res is, the iPad 2 looks fine as it is. I'd go for price, if the iPad 2 is marginally cheaper than 3 then it'll be best try them both out first.

As for apps, you'll go through a phase of installing a few, but after a while if like myself, you'll use it for just the things you need, like browsing, maps, video and the odd game. Comics and PDF files (mags) are great on it, but ebooks the Kindle wins hands down. Anything else just has the novelty factor for a while. Great items though.

There was a big difference in the screen between the iPhone3 and the iPhone4. The screen on the iPad2 looks good so not sure of there would be the same noticeable difference.

I don't know the differences between the iphones as I've not seen them, but again it's down to the individual, I don't see the point in paying out for a higher tech/spec screen on a phone when all it is is a phone, should it or does it really matter? I'd pay out on a monitor or a big screen tv, but I think it's all a bit gimmicky when it comes to phones and tablets. (My opinion only of course).

iPhone / 3G / 3GS: 480 x 320 resolution

iPhone 4 / 4S: 960 x 640 resolution

iPad 1 / 2: 1024 × 768 resolution

iPad 3: Expected to have a 2048 x 1536 resolution

Higher resolution = better for games, better for videos, etc.

But mostly, bigger numbers = better for sales.

I once overheard a neighbour back in the early 2000s enthusing about a new computer he was thinking of buying on the basis that the press advert he was holding said it had a 56k modem. He knew absolutely frack-all about computers. Mind you, his son's mate, who he was bragging to, knew only slightly more (he advised he should be looking for a computer that offered "broadband, minimum.")

Having watched a couple of films, and played a couple of HD games, on my iPad, I can't see how the extra resolution is going to improve the overall experience by any great amount. I use my pad in places where it's never optimal viewing conditions anyway, either on my lap or occasionally rattling down the west coast mainline. The value in the product IMO is still in being able to view anything at all on it, wherever and whenever, and not in peering at a steady screen long enough to dribble over a few extra pixels.

Regardless of whatever the iPad 3 brings, waiting two months to ensure you have the latest and greatest for the same price is a sensible idea.

Friends, Romans, Guitarists

Lend me your ears and check this funky bit of kit

Alesis Ampdock

Would have been handy to have an audio demo but it certainly looks promising.

Saw this in the music shop a few weeks ago, seems a bit gimmicky and knowing my luck I'd probably put my foot throu the screen. I have the iRig and a few pieces of software such as Amplitube, all good stuff :)

I perfer the ioDock myself.

I think the selling point of the ampdock are the hardware controls and foot pedal. The concept is good for multi-instrumental/occasional guitarists in a live situation; particularly those who don't really fancy carrying the additional weight of an amp. There's the other small matter of anything would sound better than a Line 6 Pod - they sound truly awful when you crank up through a PA.

I think the iodock fits into a slightly different category of usage and I've been looking at the one to potentially replace the box of rackmounted modules I cart around with me but the software isn't quite there yet.

For those who don't venture outside CF : The iPad2 (5.01) and iPhone 4s have been successfully jailbroken, OSX AND Windows tools are now available. Probably covered in the iPhone thread but it deserves a mention here too.

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Hi,

I've got an iPad2 - purchased in an Apple store. I got the Wi-Fi /3G version and when I purchased it I got an O2 SIM. I've registered the SIM in the iPad and used it once on a £2.06 / 200MB 24hr limit session. As it's now registered to the device, do I have an online O2 account somewhere that was created?

If so - how do I access it? I've tried the O2 site but it didn't recognise the SIM / mobile number.

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Seems a stupid suggestion but have you tried resetting your password? o2 accounts are tied to an email so if you try and reset yours you might get lucky.

Though as it doesn't recognise the SIM itself I don't know.
