Yes, but that is a given in the area of entertainment, isn't it? You can say the same about our traditional TV channels.

Interesting to see that, as UMP Movies ends operations in the UK, the rumoured replacement by Rishtey Cineplex hasn't taken place on VM.

Another one bites the dust!

UMP sold their EPG slot on Sky to Rishtey Cineplex.

The new channel may launch soon on Freeview.

Not a channel appealing to the masses obviously but that's not the point.

UMP Movies was one of the most watched channels within the Asian community. It makes little sense that VM strengthens its Asian channel selection with NDTV India / NDTV Spice, then neglects to add a replacement service for one of the most popular channels within that community.

I wasn't referring to the EPG arrangements at Sky but about the fact that Viacom 18 own the rights to most of the film library of UMP Movies, so Rishtey Cineplex is a natural replacement for the channel.

Viacom has been planning the launch of Rishtey Cineplex for many months so yet another example of VM's content acquisitions team not being proactive.

VM's content acquisitions team work like the old Telewest's content acquisitions team they do not go after channels until their deals is up.

But only VM's content acquisitions team knows when deals is up.

That what we got channels from Sony, Channel 5 and NDTV has launch this past summer.

And Virgin Media has signed an new deal with FOX for Fox News Channel.

New names for local TV Channels in Birmingham and Liverpool.

-Birmingham's local TV service Big Centre TV is set to be relaunched on November 1st as Made in Birmingham.

-Also Bay TV Liverpool will close on October 6th and relaunch as Made in Liverpool on October 12th.

Most likely been mentioned but vm are starting to rol out 300mb on a wider scale.
Meanwhile others such as Bt are currently trialing 1gbs service, no doubt vm will launch 1gb in due course (when everyone else has moved up to 5gbs).

I might slate vm a lot as they're a bunch of clowns but end of the day they are a business and do offer the second most ammount of premium channels in the uk.

Possibly, but that is pretty much what I was saying. If they sit around waiting for contracts to expire and totally ignore new channels that is not being proactive.

This isn't Sky Atlantic, it's a FTA channel, negotiations shouldn't be extremely complicated procedures. If they are trying to build their Asian audience, as recent acquisitions suggest, then neglecting to add the replacement for one of the most viewed Asian channels certainly isn't being proactive. I tend to agree with MB on this, VM are continuing the old Telewest method of sitting on their hands and watching the world pass by...

Nah, that's when they will start promising their upgrades, gradually rolling over the upgrade date by additional months as they fail to start by the previously announced date. (Sounds familiar?) - This also seems to be the method used when providing updates for service faults. Subscribe to text updates for a few faults, it's quite amazing how they send a daily update with the fix date slipping by a further day with each text.

And pigs should fly?

VM's TV offering is becoming less competitive with constant price increases and unreliable due to ageing hardware but I don't think a free service will "coming soon" or at all.

Did someone say vm had H2hd as a exclusive?
If so it didn't last very long as from 3rd october 2016 H2hd is now on BT tv too also added were davehd, edenhd and one more i can't remember lol.
BT are new playersin a sense, vm really need to up their game one thinks if they are to remain competetive in the tv market.
In other news vms on demand content is set to double within the next 12 months no names have been mentioned yet apart from Starz but lg are in talks with several USA networks to get backlogs of programming available via on demand on vm, one feels NBC is one of the networks so you could see classics such as airwolf, knightrider etc appear on vms on demand service in due course.

It is good that they are increasing on demand content but at the moment my box cant cope with it takes an age to load so I use Tvs own smart hub instead hopefully the V6 will solve the problem and be reasonably priced.

Sounds like you have answered the first part of your post "VM need to up their game" with your details of VM's on-demand ambitions.
Looking at the rest of VM's weaknesses:
4G- launching this month
New box - launching around year end
Network - expansion underway
Channel gaps - many significant gaps filled
Wifi network - bought Arqiva's network but no plans announced yet to offer wifi from Superhubs or VM's own cabinets.
Conclusion: Highly positive but how VM tackles the new box will be crucial so understandably they're not announcing anything until nearer the time. To those finding on-demand slow on Tivo boxes slow, they're not the only slow devices around. Try Demand 5 on an original YouView or Now TV white box and you will be overjoyed when you return to Tivo! :D

Let's not forget that these companies are operating in four areas:
- Broadband offering
- TV platform
- Mobile offering
- Original content

Sky has no mobile presence but two TV platforms. VM has only a miniscule original content presence. Each company has its strengths but these will probably narrow over time.

In terms of Joe public those are the 4 areas but VM and BT (Openreach) also operate in the infrastructure market which may not be something a consumer would take interest of when making a decision but still a big factor in how VM, BT and Sky operate.

Agree bud but difference is BT are investing in getting channels and content and are listening to what customers want, not sure how true it is but their sales team did tell me "they are in talks with SKY that's all they can say at this point"
Also BT unlike vm offer a 4g mobile service, faster upload speeds on broadband without the need to sign up for a premium product, BT like vm already increased their bae line fibre speeds but bt offer 55mbs at base level, vm offer 50mbs? or is it 30?
BT are working on a new box that will alledgedly be a game changer, they are also looking to buy youview in a £60millon deal, BT were the first to offer a 4k channel, vm are the second from last to offer 4k talktalk are last.
VM are however showing some good intent with looking to purchase more on demand content but as we all know vm drag their feet and someone like SKY or BT could easily come along and take the content right from beneath vms nose and vm will say 2we tried but the network wanted too much money." which is a load of bull imo.
I tink BT will overtake VM in content however i think vm will remain a strong leading company for broadband.
The point of this i guess is all companies have their strong and weak points.
The youview box rips vms tivo to shreds imo but the new vm tivo will change all of that one thing is for certain buckle up it's going to be a rollercoaster of a ride.

I think in a way all of the big 3 (i say big 3 because i don't count talktalk as a big player in tv) piggy back on each others service one way or another all use the sattelite system to recieve channels, bt and vm use EE network for mobile although BT now own EE, Sky use openreach for broadband etc.

I suspect that's down to Sky trying to undermine their product to make it less competitive ala Sky Atlantic.

They don't even have Sky One but yes, probably Sky's way of punishing BT for not allowing Sky to resell the BT Sport channels. Whatever the reason, it does mean that many potential viewers will be less likely to take pay TV services from BT.

Sony seem to be going for really cheap carriage deals, e.g. using the local TV multiplexes on Freeview rather than the national ones.

With True Drama morphing into True Entertainment +1 and True Movies 2 morphing into True Movies/Christmas +1, they now have less to offer VM. Perhaps they also have planned changes for the Sony Movies channel, maybe merging it with Movie Mix?

Anyone concerned about the lack of Viceland on VM should be reassured by this!

Quote:

Financial Times Viceland UK suffers viewer switch-off TV channel for millennials drops to zero viewers in debut fortnight.
Vice Media’s television channel Viceland has suffered a slow start in the UK, including periods with no viewers, in stark contrast to its chief executive’s conviction that it would bring millennials back to TV.
But it looks to be on its way to VM

Quote:

Currently, Viceland is only available via Sky, to which less than half of that demographic [16 to 34-year-olds] have access, but Vice plans to broaden its reach through other networks, including BT and Virgin, in the coming months.

I watched a programme about boxing in Ghana that was fascinating. Other than that I can't relate to the channel at all. Way too Americanised. I get the feeling people at Viceland are watching what is trending on Social Media then making programs to reflect the trends. Problem being is by the time they've made said program the Social Media generation have moved on to the next big thing.

Terrible channel, terrible programming with very little appeal. The boxing program I watched was only about 21 mins long. Other than that, since launch, its been gash. Google gash for those outwith Scotland

1) The only launch date we have confirmed is Autumn 2016.

I still watch them, Den, but through my recordings to avoid the ads and to watch them when I want to see them.

I won't be recording anything from Viceland if it comes unless they improve radically the quality of their material.

Yes Viceland certainly has to improve considerably in the content it is showing that is for sure OB.

Possibly, but Sony tend to repeat content across their channels, so that isn't conclusive evidence of a future merger.

The listings feeds for both True Drama and True Movies 2 have disappeared rather than being replaced with listings for the +1 timeshifts. Sony sometimes uses +1 timeshifts as fillers before launching new services, so the space could be reserved for new services (or even reserved to bring more>movies / moviemix back to Sky). I wouldn't like to predict what will actually happen.

We was only asking due to this wee bit on Wikipedia (Yes we know everyone can update this page).

I had seen that too. Even though anyone can edit Wikipedia it is a vague "safe" statement with no source referenced. True Christmas +1 is a temporary rename as the channel is a temporary seasonal channel, it doesn't actually state that it will revert to True Movies 2 at some point. It remains to be seen whether or not True Movies 2 returns in January. At the moment, the lack of a listings feed suggests there may be further changes ahead.

You would think that channel 106 would connect with a red button directly to BBC3 via the BBC i-Player. At least that would encourage people to watch this material.

That's what I thought - the CBS suite of channels should be in all packs anyway. I appreciate that they've not always been on Freeview/Freesat but they have been for some time now so VM needs to reflect this.

Yes. But other platforms don't do this either. I would like to see 106 deeplinked to the BBC3 content on the iPlayer, not just iPlayer itself.

Even more of a reason to downgrade my subscription. You could probably record the whole of their output during the free periods to watch later given the number of repeats!

Well they're starting to show movies from next week it seems starting with Battle Royale.
But i do agree it is a awful channel and it isn't free it's included in your sub.
The channels come from stations located at various areas in the world they beam up to these things above the Earth called satellites which in turn beam the channels down to big satellite dishes and they are then sent to your home via different methods aka cable, broadband, sattelite, aerial etc.

Most new Freeview channels now have restricted coverage, due to there only being capacity available on the COM 7 or COM 8 Freeview muxes. These channels are more & more seeing Freesat as a "gap filler" to try & cover the remaining areas.

Thanks.

Apparently, there is some limited capacity on other muxes with more coverage, but it will be expensive.

I think that you're right, new channels do seem to be using the cheaper Com 7/8 muxes and filling in the gaps with Freesat.

It's a shame some way can't be found to get them onto VM.

Now we know why VM never picked these up during their recent acquisitions.

After this, are we missing any movie channels?

I wonder if the UKTV channel Drama going FTA has led to True Drama losing viewers?

Indeed, the termination of the listings feeds was a strong indication that they wouldn't be returning.

A few channels are still rumoured to be joining Freeview, including Rishtey Cineplex. One of those may have reserved LCN 90 with Digital UK before Information TV added their Frontrunner channel. No doubt the Manchester Entertainment Network will shortly be adding something to replace True Movies/Christmas now that the channel has migrated to the Comux local multilplex.

It wasn't very well defined as channel, sharing content with True Entertainment / True Movies. Sony has always spread the same content thinly across multiple channel brands. There will be a cost saving from doing this with timeshifts, avoiding the additional production/continuity required for the extra brands.

Sony and the legacy companies it acquired have previously killed off brands, only to bring them back at a later date, so True Drama could possibly return someday.

The legacy BBC Three SD and HD services were removed from VM's SI tables. Presumably someone at VM was a little too keen to remove all traces of the channel and accidentally removed the link to the Tivo app on channel 106.
