Virgin have the best platform to offer on demand programming, but appear to have come away from investing in it in favour of bulking up their channel packages.

Would have thought they could have sorted a deal to keep at least on xl pack, weird that it disappears at the the same time itv 2,3,4 HD were supposed to appear but didn't.Suspect contractual problems is the technical differculty why they have not appeared yet,if it is then we will never be told what is going on
Virgin had the best platform to offer demand ,but I'm afraid were on demand is concerned it slowly dying.suspect sky to surpasses it by the end of the year and bt the same,3rd spot is becoming more a reality earlier than I thought

Who knows the ITV content could be linked with a deal for the additional ITV HD channels.

Should know by now sky get the blame for everything and vm are happy to stay silent and let customers think that, wonder how long before bt start getting the blame as well:)

Maybe VM are thrashing out a better deal. After all, if we continue to get ITV On Demand 'free' as part of the XL pack, wouldn't that be worth the slight delay? Something is bound to happen when the ESPN deal expires, let's just wait and see. Might even get Atlantic....!

It's just a technical hitch, john. What's the big deal?

Maybe VM are close to doing a deal with Netflix and think we can get the ITV programmes from there. Also would be another reason for customers to upgrade to TiVo.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

Is it really to Virgins advantage to add Netflix and Lovefilm? Would adding both really be such a big selling point to attract or keep customers in their droves? I'd imagine Virgin wouldn't exactly make mega bucks from the deals. In fact it would probably harm their own movie rental service, Virgin Movies, more than anything else.

spj20016 09-03-2013 18:00

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

It might not be a great advantage to VM but it would be a great advantage to the customers. It would give us more access to more content. And I don't think it would make much difference to the Virgin Movies service because I suspect most films rented are the new releases.

Virgin Movies is owned by FilmFlex, which in turn is owned by Sony & Disney.

I wonder how much The ESPN wholesale price is, lets just say it's around £6 per XL Customer a month. Maybe they are developing a Netflix app and giving away subscriptions as part of the XL pack? Similar to the Spotify deal.

Netflix hardly challenges Virgin Movies. Virgin Movies premieres new films on a PPV basis at around £4-£5 each. Netflix shows back catalogue programming (which mostly isn't available on VM OD) as well as a small selection of mostly terrible films. Hardly any competition really in my opinion.

Ill be quite happy if this is the case, netflix is sometimes quite useful but expensive if you already have Sky Movies.

Yes, it is, Chad, and this is precisely what Mr Berkett was saying recently. It's all about content, and if VM has more content than any other provider, people will go for VM rather than Sky.

VM will take their cut, obviously.

At present, Virgin Movies is a PPV service, and I for one won't use that very often because I might not like the film I select, but I've paid the money for it anyway. Would much prefer a subscription service, which gives me more flexibility.

I haven't used Virgin Movies for over a year now.

Hi Andy, I remember the 20p reports and did a quick search and found this taken from a reply by Chad to Muppetman on 3rd August 2011:

"Not really. A Virgin employee confirmed here last year that the deal for ESPN costs Virgin no more than 20p per XL customer per month."

The full post can be found at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35282820-post923.html

I couldnt find the original quote, perhaps someone else can.

That is what I heard a few years back. Maybe an insider confirm if this is just pure rubbish. It sticks clearly in my mind as I could hardly believe Virgin would only pay 20p per XL customer.

I wish I could remember who it was who made this suggestion originally. I actually think I read it before I was even a member of the site.

I'm sure an insider can confirm is this figure is close, or way off the mark.

I'm sure I've read somewhere (can't find the link) that Sky are paying ITV around 10p extra per customer for ITV HD 2, 3, and 4.

Might seem small change, but when multiplied by the number of customers....££££££££!

All pro wresting is fixed (except freestyle, roman Greco), I remember 30 years ago on holiday I saw Giant Haystacks lose to a pin full from a 12 stone wrestler. If he sat on him he would have put him in hospital!:)

Yeah but ESPN is £10 a month for anyone not on XL, so does that mean Virgin Media get about £9 in profit from every ESPN (non-XL) subscriber?

I can see that being a figure for non subscription based channels, but for a subscription channel I bet it's quite a bit. Lets pretend virgin got sky sports included on the XL pack, I doubt they would be able to reduce it to less than £10 a month per customer...

VM don't make that amount of profit with ESPN, at least, not in that way.

If ESPN was £10 per month for everyone on VM, how many people would take it? Not many.

ESPN get away with it on Sky because on that platform, customers are more willing to pay for premium content.

By doing a wholesale deal with VM, ESPN win due to extra cash (20p per XL customer every month). VM win because XL looks more attractive to upgrade to (which doesn't do ESPN any harm). XL customers win because they get the ESPN content at no extra cost.

Everyone wins.

Didn't Premier Sports want to be on XL as well as opposed to being a Premium channel? Why wouldn't they? 20p per XL customer every month vs hoping that a few will sign up for £10 per month.

ESPN is £8 a month with Virgin, or £6 a month if you take Sky Sports with it. (no extra cost for XL).

Wrestling is fixed in as much as the winner(s) are determined before the fight and then the wrestlers themselves work out how the match goes. There is always the risk of a real injury occurring.

A couple of examples. First, don't watch if squeamish. Second, lots of blood. Potentially NSFW.

Wrestler breaks leg jumping from ropes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOSYcM4AJ8k

Wrestler has faced busted open by a ladder:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUTkL9euv60

One wrestler even suffered life changing neck injuries after another wrestler did a move wrong. No-one disputes the fact wrestling is 'fixed'. If we choose to watch it and buy into it as real, then who is getting harmed? Does it alter your life in some way Arthur if people choose to buy into wrestling? If not, then let those of us who like wrestling get on with enjoying it.

Anyway, sorry for going off topic. Does anyone know when the deal with WWE runs out, and are we likely to get a new deal?

Maybe the loss of ITV On Demand (except for the 7 day catch-up) and the non-appearance of ITV 2/3/4 HD are related?

I would think that there are a link, probably due to multiplex upgrading issues. If ITV player is to have ITV 2, 3 and 4HD content then this would have needed to be upgraded at the same time. Problems with this would set back the launch.

This is the report you saw:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-21724814

It is for the launch of an Israeli version of the service. It will not be available here.

I thought it was a channel for fans of Dogs ( digital onscreen graphics), they could sit there and look at the screen filled with dogs instead of just one in the corner

Good idea for them with Dog.

I know someone who need to keep a telly on when they are out to keep their dog from barking.

ITV HD Channels Update:

As of March 11th no new date has been confirmed by my insiders.

I still think Virgin Media will retry on March 18th, March 19th or March 21st.

Giving that there was an announcement on the 7th to say the were going live that day, they must have been a 'flick of the switch' away from our screens.
I'm sure whatever has gone wrong is being worked on as a matter of urgency, I'd be surprised if it takes 2 weeks to sort it out, I'll guess that they will be available at the end of this week.

Sent a email to ITV:
Hi there
last Thursday (7th March) Virginmedia announced on their website that later that day ITV's 2/3/4 HD would launch, only to state a few hours later that there will be a delay to said start-up. Do you know what the problem was and when the launch of the 3 HD channels will now be happening on their platform? Virginmedia just will not give a answer on the subject apart from 'technicial problems' and 'coming soon'.
Thanks in advance
kind regards
John Simmons

This is the reply from ITV:
Dear John
Thank you for your email regarding HD services.
I regret that we have no information regarding carriage of HD services on additional platforms. We would not normally receive such information until Contracts have been signed but I can confirm that we have no details.
I‘m sorry that I’m unable to be of further assistance but please do not hesitate to get in touch if there’s anything else I can assist with in the future.
Once again, thank you for taking the trouble to contact ITV.
Kind regards

I don't understand why everyone is so impatient, we know they will be coming in days/weeks, highly unlikely to be months/years, just have some patience :)
Aside from the football, there isn't much worth watching in HD on those channels any way.

I wouldnt worry about this johnasimmons because I sent an email to cbs about cbs drama launching and the reply I received gave no hope and implied it would not be launching then a couple of weeks later Cbs Drama did launch on virgin. post 77 coming soon to virgin media vol 4

Oh, It is just a standard email - the department don't know anything until they are told, which is usually on or after the channels are launched.

True, but sometimes channels just 'appear'; for example Channel 5 HD sometime back.

If I am right here - that was due to new broadcasting deal with Channel 5 being signed an day before the Channel 5 HD launch day.

Virgin Media also launch 5* +1 and 5USA +1 on the same day with Five on Demand also coming at an later date.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

I believe that is the correct answer Media Boy :)
Of course if ITV's 2/3/4 HD had appeared last Thursday it would have been the same situation ie not on the EPG beforehand.

Not with all the childish fuss we've witnessed here over the last few days. Who could blame VM if they never pre announced anything again?

And the ones who moaned, and moaned, this time would be the ones responsible for the lack of pre launch information next time.

Also from VM forum - killing another rumour...

did this contract end date [for ITV On Demand] have any relevance to the non appearance of ITV2/3/4 in HD?

The dates the query was raised match with the launch date

No it doesn't , and the dates don't match https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2013/03/19.gif
ITV On Demand archives ceased to be available on our platform from the 23rd of February, the launch of the ITV HD channels was due on the 7th of March

How reliable is that message though? I can see that there's already been mistakes made by VM on that thread

I'd prefer them NOT pre announcing anything anyway after the whole TV Anywhere disaster and now announcing channels for the next day and not even manage to keep that promise.
So I'd rather switch on the TiVo box and be surprised if there is something new :p:

I like that we got pre launch info for the ITV HD channels, but I'm sensible enought to know that things can unfortunately get delayed and don't start throwing my toys out of the pram when they do get delayed.

The ITV HD channels (lack of) has caused a lot of discussion on this thread for a long time, and provked a lot of critisism of VM, so it was good to know that a deal had been done. That meant that the uncertainty was gone. All people had to do was exercise a little paitience.

To be honest I am not that fussed about the ITV HD channels. But announcing them ONE day before they were supposed to be available and then they can't even stick to that. We knew the TV Anywhere app was coming, how long did that take in the end? By no means am I saying it will take that long again. But Virgin's word doesn't mean a lot.

Well, they did actually announce it for the same day. You'd think they could have checked if it had actually arrived first. ;)

I think that is what is catching people out about that report. The US channel launched in April 2012. The Israeli company that has just launched it's own version has hinted it is interested in the UK market, but that is all.

Horse & Country on its way to Virgin?

Horse & Country TV are doing a survey via their website to expand their audience. They want to know whether the channel should launch on Freeview, Freesat, BT Vision or Virgin Media next. Before anyone asks me, I participated in the survey and voted for Virgin. :D Is this a good thing or a bad thing?:o:
