Quote:

Wayne Rooney has defended himself after being accused of helping to get Vincent Kompany sent off in Manchester City's 3-2 FA Cup defeat by Manchester United.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson added that it was a "natural reaction" when Rooney waved an imaginary card before referee Chris Foy showed one.

On Twitter, Rooney wrote: "Funny how people think I got Kompany sent off.

"I'm not [the] referee. I didn't give [the] red card. But it was a clear red card - a two-footed tackle."
Quote:

Earlier, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini had accused Rooney of putting pressure on Foy to send off Kompany. The defender, 25, faces a four-match ban after he was sent off for a tackle on Nani at Etihad Stadium.

Mancini said: "It was not a red card. Rooney told him [Foy] his decision."

A three-man Football Association commission will decide if Foy made an "obvious error" in dismissing the Belgian.

If City are unsuccessful, the FA could extend the ban to five matches should it decide that the appeal had no chance of success, although that is thought unlikely in this case.

Mancini is confident his captain will be cleared by the FA, saying after the loss to United that "I am sure that we will win".

"There is no way Vincent shouldn't play against Liverpool in the Carling Cup semi-final on Wednesday. It was 300% not a sending off," the Italian added.

No he wasn't. The precise moment Song makes the pass Henry is in front of their full back, easily onside. It's really easy to tell from the replay as Henry is standing on the line at the edge of the penalty area while their full back is behind the line.

Oh yeah he was obviously onside. Even that picture is taken somewhat after the ball was been played, when Song played the ball he was on that white line and suddenly speed up as the ball was played. His instincts and movement are still there it would seem.

The Football Association has rejected Manchester City's appeal against Vincent Kompany's red card in the 3-2 FA Cup defeat by Manchester United.

The defender, 25, will serve a four-match ban immediately for his two-footed tackle on Nani.

Kompany will miss the Carling Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool and the return tie on 25 January.

He will also be absent from the league trip to Wigan on Monday and the home game against Tottenham on 22 January.

An FA statement said: "The suspension consists of a statutory three-match suspension for serious foul play plus one additional game given this is Kompany's second dismissal of the season."

Yes I have changed my view on it after the game. Two footed and, crucially, he wasn't in control and just threw himself into the tackle and that is very dangerous play. It didn't look bad because Nani jumped and he won the ball. However it also could have been a Shawcross on Ramsey moment.

Players have a duty to avoid injury to other players on the pitch. When you throw yourself at a player, moving at speed, you can no longer control what happens and you are effectively gambling with the chances of them picking up a serious injury. When Shawcross went into Ramsey he just lunged at the ball but this time the gamble didn't pay off and Ramsey lost a year of his career. All because of a reckless, ill-timed, tackle.

Finally it's simply poor tackling. Contain, wait, and time it to perfection with one leg and a clean dispossession.

Liverpool are set to make a shock move for Chelsea striker Saloman Kalou as they aim to steal him from under the noses of Arsenal and Paris St Germain.

Arsene Wenger was confident of landing the Ivory Coast star, who has found himself surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge this season under new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas.

But talkSPORT has been told Liverpool have now made an enquiry for the 26-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Kenny Dalglish views Kalou as a financially sound alternative to a possible bid for Darren Bent, who could cost in excess of £25m, and likes the fact he can play as either a second striker or out wide.

PSG have also been monitoring the situation and could be an attractive alternative for Kalou with a host of former Chelsea men already at the French giants, including new boss Carlo Ancelotti, Claude Makelele and ex-Blues coach Paul Clement

It's up to the club to handle the punishment. His Tweet was homophobic, the joke being that gay men rape people, and uncomplicated in that it was undeniably him. I don't think he should be fired but this only a inconsistency because different clubs will handle issues in different ways.

Yes and if that punishment is way ott compared to other sanctions dished out recently for similar behaviour I don't think it a problem to question it.

Also we as citizens keep having it drummed into us that we have to respect everyone and be tolerant, until this guy messes up that is, then tolerance goes straight out of the window and the only possible way for it to be resolved is if he's sacked, if we really gave a toss about homophobia we'd make sure he was either better educated or given some advice on taste and decency before showing him the door at least.

Those two had a long history of it and probably deserved to be punished harsher but that said it looked like a convenient way of getting rid of them which I suspect they were going to do regardless.

Move over Man Utd and Man City, Spurs are going to take the Premier League, teams coming to The Lane thinking that Spurs are a walk over can forget it, We are now a force to contend with.

Come on you Spurs.

Yes there is still a long way to go in this one but if we can reach Wembley l would be extremely unhappy if we could not beat Palace or Cardiff to win it then.

Aston Villa have signed Los Angeles Galaxy and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane on loan until 25 February, subject to Fifa clearance.

"This is only short term, of course," said the much-travelled ex-Coventry, Leeds, Spurs and Liverpool striker.

"But there has been a lot of speculation over the years linking my name to Villa and, finally, I'm here."

Keane, 31, who has already been training with Villa, could make his debut at home to Everton on Saturday.

Dubliner Keane, who started his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers as a 17-year-old, admitted: "I'm delighted to be back in the Premier League.

Everton are hoping to make Manchester United's Darron Gibson their first signing in the January transfer window.

Manager David Moyes has a limited transfer budget to work with despite selling Mikel Arteta to Arsenal for £10m last summer.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder would cost around £2m

A few weeks ago I would have have been amused at your optimism but it's not such an outlandish suggestion now!!. Saying that, United are on a wobble, City seem to be starting one but Spurs have yet to go through the obligitory poor patch yet.

What about at the start of the season when they lost 3-0 to Utd and 5-1 to City and were bottom of the league.

Not really sure losing to City and United are evidence of a wobble. However there is nothing that says a team has to have a dodgy period. I think the risk with Spurs is if they have any injuries to Bale or Modric, they haven't had much of an Injury crisis yet and I think that could happen and the question will be how they respond.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has signed a long-term extension to his contract, tying him to his boyhood club for the rest of his playing career.

There was no mention of the length of the contract in Liverpool's official statement, but the club did say it was a "long-term" deal and that he also agreed to take up an ambassadorial role at the club after he retires from playing.

"I'm very happy," Gerrard, 31, told the club website. "It's a very proud day for myself and my family.

"This is the club I love and is the club I have supported since I was a young boy. I am living the dream as the captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I love coming to work every day and the experiences I have had since I was eight years of age and first signed for the club, I wouldn't change them for the world. To extend that and to hopefully have some more good times in a red shirt is what I want.

"It's really flattering for me that the club have offered me the chance to stay when I eventually hang my boots up," he added. "Hopefully that will be in many years to come because I want to play for as long as I can.

"I'll know myself when it's time to hang my boots up and then hopefully I can stay involved with the club and set the right example for youngsters coming through."

England midfielder Gerrard came through the youth system at Anfield and has played over 550 senior matches for the club.

He penned the new deal the day after his penalty fired the Reds to a 1-0 Carling Cup semi-final first-leg win over Manchester City.

"It comes on the back of a fantastic team performance last night when we got the result we were looking for," he added. "Hopefully we can finish the job off in two weeks time and take all of our magnificent fans down to Wembley for a day out.

"The contract extension coming the day after has been the icing on the cake so it has been a perfect 24 hours."
Good news for Liverpool fans.

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has joined Everton on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The 24-year-old has moved to Merseyside for an undisclosed fee, becoming the club's second signing of the January transfer window following Landon Donovan's loan move from Los Angeles Galaxy.

The midfielder, a product of the United youth team, scored 10 goals in 60 appearances for the Old Trafford side since breaking into the first team in the 2005-06 season.

Gibson, who was born in Northern Ireland but opted to play for the Republic of Ireland, has played 17 times for his country, scoring once

On one of the websites I saw a quote where he said he's never scored from inside the box. The problem with that is he feels he can score from the edge of the box every time he gets the ball and he isn't good enough for that. Take the odd goal out of his game and he offers very little to any side

The thing is now once Scholes retires again at the end of the season Man Utd will need to buy 2 midfielders in my estimation at the end of the season as they are looking increasingly threadbare in the midfield department.

yes we are bare there and really do need to buy. We have Cleverly who when fit is good plus Anderson who can be good when he wants to be.

Gibson was never at the level that was needed for us, and hasn't shown any signs he ever will be. Yes all clubs need squad players who aren't world class but he wasn't even good enough for that. I felt having him there was another sign of the dip in quality at the club.

We have Pogba and Morrison who are both meant to be good but for some reason Fergie won't give either of them a game, i'd rather they played rather than Scholes as they could at least move onwards. Scholes was a step back and a sign we have a weak squad

I'd say losing your first 2 matches by a total of 8 goals to 1 constitutes a wobble...

Jermain Defoe's agent has told Tottenham Hotspur that the striker wants to move in this transfer window because he is not in Harry Redknapp's first team. The manager revealed that Daniel Levy, the chairman, has been contacted by Defoe's representative to discuss the future of the England international, who wants to play regularly before this summer's European Championship.

"Daniel spoke to his agent who said he is not happy because he wants to play and he has got a few clubs in for him," Redknapp said. "I am sure he has got a few clubs in for him but we are not selling him. He is saying this club wants him and that club wants him – that is how they make their money. He is not moving anywhere, though. He is on contract here and is a big player for us."

Alex is expected to begin talks with QPR next week.

Cracking save by the Bolton goalie from Rooney's penalty.

Defender wasn't very subtle using both hands to push to give the penalty away.
