Had a hobble down to the local church today http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_St_Mary,_Potton in preparation for service tomorrow (had to see if I could walk it).

It took a long time to get there and back but it was very nice.

Hope it all goes ok tomorrow :)

Well done Dilli, I know that the Guide Dog Association take the placing of their dogs very seriously so to have passed their home visit is a thumbs-up to the type of person we know you to be. :tu:

Did they give you any indication of how long it will be before a suitable dog will be ready for you to do your training and have they said what breed of dog you are going to need?

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4

It's looking likely to be four or five months 'till I get the dog at the earliest.

They didn't specify a breed but said the dog would match me and my walking style :)

I always imagine guide dogs to be golden labradors - but the temperament and training is paramount I would think - oh and for the dog too :D:Sprint:

Well I got two responses today from 2 airlines, based in Luton.

The other said no vacaincies, but then gave me details of their sister company who has technical jobs.

So 5 returns so far. :D

I'm happy you are happy. I like happy people. :)

I didn't realise the DWP used CDs now, it certainly sounds like a good idea and allows you to keep your dealings private, I always used to sympathise with the people who had to get others to read their mail out to them. I wonder if more Government Departments have the same service available?

Following the phone all telling me that the company I had an interview for on Monday, telling me that they are now only employing 1 person at the moment instead of the 3, I had a phone call from a quality manager who was impressed with my CV, (this was one of the 28 companies I sent my CV to) and wants to see me next Thursday for a chat.

They have a person doing the job I did, but they are long term sick and they are looking into expanding the job, so for them to call me hopefully a job is just around the corner.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4

Yes best of luck Hom3er. :tu:

Remember that if you've got an interview it's normally because they like what they've read or know about you (few people bother interviewing no hopers). If you do come under what may seem aggressive, patronising or even intimidatory questioning at any point, stay calm and professional at all times. If, for example, it's put to you that you have serious shortcomings in certain relevant areas then do your best to set out the qualities, experience and knoweldge you have which compensate. It's common for interviewers to appear very judgemental about certain things - qualifications, say - but what they're often doing is trying to see how well you argue your case and cope with the pressure they're deliberately exposing you to. The more you can research and anticipate the company and the requirements of the role, the better equipped you'll be to translate what you feel you have to offer into language they'll understand. Basically, you have to try to sell yourself and not just wilt under the pressure. If doing that seems a tad arrogant, please just accept that unless you're obviously making it all up as you go along, the interviewer will be delighted to learn that you've thought about the position and the relevant skills/knowledge you have. I suppose interviewing is often a bit of a game, even though I accept it doesn't often feel like it at the time.

One final tip. I often hear it said that the first impression is vital and I can't deny that it is important but at least you have time to change that impression if things don't start well. No such opportunity to change the final impression you make, however, so try to finish off the interview on a positive note by, for example, summarising briefly what you feel you have to offer or commenting favourably on what you've gleaned about the company/post during the interview. There really are many ways in which this can be done but the key is to plan your strategy beforehand and adapt it to suit the situation you find on the day.

Got the promotion at work I've been chasing for almost a year now. Roughly a 30% rise in salary and a nice healthy extra amount in my pay packet each month. Going to make a massive difference to our lives (wife and I).

Off out at the weekend for a celebratory curry and a beer or two :)

They have a person doing the job I did, but they are long term sick and they are looking into expanding the job, so for them to call me hopefully a job is just around the corner.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you Hom3r! :)

I can read that no problem but then again being left handed I can read upside down just as easily as I can the right way up which was very useful when I was a shop steward.

If you are struggling click the spoiler.

Spoiler:
Oh well if you really have to click it again.
Spoiler:
Are you really not going to try!
Spoiler:
Couldn't believe that I could actually understand what I was reading. The phenomenal power of the human mind, according to a research at cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place.

The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole. Amazing huh? Yeah and I always thought spelling was important.

It is at least 5 years old and if you copy and paste the complete text into a google search bar you will get almost 4000 hits, but it is a fun test of how different peoples minds work.

Post it upside down it makes no difference to me.;)

Down side is that I often type things backwards without realising it, good thing I pre-view my posts.:D

My answerphone/fax unit had gone really intermittant on the handset lead and I couldn't work out how to get it apart, found the service manual on the net (gratis :) ) and it showed how to do it. Damn cunning these Japanese, not the inviting screws underneath but ones hidden under the paper roll. Found dry joints on the handset lead connector. Now all fixed. :)

Have you tried turning your keyboard around so that the f-keys are at the bottom?

Not sure about this but here goes. I received an email about a job that I applied for through an agency, turns out I have not been shortlisted for the role, but they would like some information from me to put me on the books. :)
