As long as you can see the picture I don't see what all the fuss is about. Companys have got people wrapped around their fingers with this HD with 5x the quality picture. Next year they will be bringing tellys out with 10x the quality pictures (SUPER HD) and you'll get the daft folk going out and buying them.

For anybody who is interested I have generated a listing of all the ITV1HD programs that are in HD until 16th April. This was generated using DigiGuide.

Thanks for the itvHD info , i notice all the programmes say stereo sound i wonder if any of them will be in 5.1 sound. Also i just heard itv advertise the new series of the quiz show divided and im sure they said it's on itv1 and itvhd. Unless they just say that for all there programmes as they are all on itvhd just most are upscaled. A bit confusing really if that is what itv are going to do.

Yes I think they are currently telling people they have an ITV 1 HD channel now. Maybe when more people keep an eye out for the HD channel they may just start to advertise HD content in HD.

Yes but the result of the sport event will still be the same. I have v+ and yes I don't have a hd set yet but have seen the channel quality on various hd tellys and I still can't work out what all the fuss is about. If & when I do get a hd ready set theres no way I will pay extra for hd like sky1 hd sky sports hd etc & I only have the ones now because Im on the XL package with virgin.

I just think its all a big con & there will be something else new in a few years time (SUPER HD or whatever) what will make you want to change your telly again because the one you have bought a year or so ago won't be able to show a 10X quality picture.

super hd as oyu put is coming but still about 2-5 years away even sky wont be able to deploy it in current format, lets put it this way it take up 4-7 anagolue channel spaces on virign, but the quailty is about 12 times better than hd and 2 times better than cimena

Yep 3D tv is already in the pipeline and you need a 3d compatible tv for that too.

It has taken 25 years for HD to make a serious breakthrough, how long do you think it will be before SKY can commercially broadcast a super HD channel of over 4000 lines?

Personally I'd go with "not in our lifetime".

The bandwidth needed just isn't there.

It doesn't seem to be doing to well. It is too niche. If it does happen it will be a slow burner. With HD there is difference. 3D in its current form is a gimmick and will die off. 3D was tried before and was popular and then the craze died. Virgins approach is better on demand not channels devoted to it.

i dunno the few football matches that have been on BBC HD have been pretty good in terms of picture quality much better than ESPN. ive also noticed that the ITV HD picture quality is pretty awesome especially with HD content, SD upscaling is non too shabby either.

Eurosport has proved to be awesome picture quality wise eapecially with HD content (with the native HD logo showing) and is some of the best HD content ive seen (bar Bluray).
ESPN HD seems like its doing nothing but upscaling even the so called HD content looks a little below par in terms of crispness and overall image quality

the best of the bunch and the benchmark to beat is Discovery HD. up to now all the content showed is HD and it all looks stunning. i dont know what Discovery HD are showing but its the best HD channel there is in terms of image quality.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

I have found the itvhd upscaling to be poor tbh, agree on ESPNHD it looked amazing for the first few EPL/SPL games but has gone worse as the season has gone on, not been upgraded to NGTV yet so no comment on the other channels but glad to see the look good, hopefully not long to go before I see them.

Have a look at ESPN HD of US sports, that is simply staggering. They have of course been filming in HD for a decade now over there so their production is going to far superior. The football in ESPN does seem to vary for EPL, sometime it looks very good and sometimes it is meh.

Lets hope the South Africans know what they are doing with the host HD feed come the World Cup.

i have ive watched MLB, CFB, basketball and ice hockey and personally only the MLB has really impressed me. the basketball and CFB looks HD but is not good in terms of image quality and ice hockey you see so little that to be honest its not worth HD coverage (due to the cameta being so far away from the action) and i love ice hockey.

personaly the best native resolution sports comes from Eurosport as proved over the weekend the showjumping, weightlifing and curling looks stunning but its just a shame that they are minority sports. next sunday the live le-Mans is on and is HD so that shoeld be awesome.

ESPN HD looked great as we had nothing really to compare it to now we have itv HD (football) and Eurosport HD and its pretty clear even from the limited HD native sports on both that ESPN are doing a **** poor job in terms of HD picture quality.

that probably the reason why its pretty poor then in terms of image quality lol.

seriously though dont get me wrong its great to have ESPN HD and until we had nothing to compare it with we were happy and content but now Eurosport HD has proved how HD sports coverage should look in terms of HD image quality in the week we have had it.

ESPN just looks way too soft with a lack of image clarity on all their HD content. its like they are using a blur effect or something to soften the overall image.

ESPN and Sky have a strange relationship... they are in competition for sports rights, yet Sky manage their sales and subsciptions on satellite in the UK and they also film their HD output for Prem Footy.

Hasn't anyone learned from the doomed TIVO/Sky tie-up years ago?

CBS Channels on Virgin Media.

The following is an email from CBS/Zonemedia.

Quote:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Whilst we would very much like all our channels to be available on the Virgin Media platform but sadly we have no control over this.

Virgin Media manage the number of channels that are available to their customers.

If you are a Virgin Media customer, maybe you could suggest that they carry our other channels?

Virgin Media has a contacts page on their website http://www.virginmedia.com/customers.../customers.php

Ultimately we imagine customer requests direct to Virgin Media are more likely to result in more of our channels being carried.

Sorry but the PIN protection is totally separate from the actual broadcast stream and has absolutely no effect on the picture quality.

That might be so but i distinctly remember the picture quality deteriorated dramatically when the PIN service came in. I always used to think that the Sky movie channels had the best picture quality of them. Having said that since sky basics have come back the picture quality on those has been rubbish.

I wonder if it is just VM really scrimping on the bandwidth.

don't forget awhile ago VM used to take a landline feed of the Sky channels and then they changed this to coming down the satelite due to costs and the picture went a lot worse on those channels. Not sure if this was the same time

I doubt VM would show premium channels on low bandwith... they are handled in Luxembourg now though, don't know if that has made any difference?

I personally think that all the quality on the sky channels are poor. (movies, sport, and sky 1)
If you are near the tv you can see the poor bit rate used on all the channels.

no, they have to pass through Luxembourg and then sent to VM.

LOOKS Like we are getting ITV HD regional, this must be expensive for ITV to do this

My V+ Decoder is wired to a Yamaha 7:1 Amplifier via a optical lead, yet the sound transmitted through is 2 channel stereo. So, to push the sound further I switch the amplifier to 7 Channel Stereo. So, I dont know why some of you are saying that some movies are being transmitted in 5:1 sound. Am I missing something here?

the expense comes from the broadcast equipment needed to transmit the HD format, id imagine

Only some channels/shows/movies are in 5.1 have a look in the V+ forum as there are a few threads knocking about there that deal with this.

Make sure HDMI Audio over-ride is switched to ON in the Audio & Display menu on your V+.

Your amp should automatically detect the broadcast from virgin, the reason the sound is of poor quality is because most of it is broadcast in Dolby Pro Logic II, which as you say is 2 channel stereo but fed to the back speakers also, 5.1 though is Dolby Digital which gives a vastly improved sound to what you are watching, especially the latest sound effects in movies, My amp is connected through the V+ via an HDMI lead and 90% displays pro logic II which is ok but not brill but as soon as it switches to dolby digital there is an instant improvement in the quality of sound.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

My Denon rocks with DD Pro logic II, I was really surprised how good it was when I replaced my 10 year old Panasonic which only did pro logic.

I know that "ITV will launch ITV1 +1 on Virgin Channel 114 soon (Only in England and Wales.)" comes under the heading of "Unknown Dates" but can anyone explain why we have +1s for the other ITVs already but not ITV1? Maybe it's to do with regional variations of ITV1 complicating things.

Just back from a few days in Blackpool and whilst hurtling down the Pepsi Max some questions surfaced to the forefront of my brain.

I've still not got my card in Uddingston. Does this mean I'll be able to use my dodgey box forever. :disturbd:

Can I tune my V+ box into get sky1 HD :disturbd:

Can I not get ITV HD because Scotland didnae qualify for the World Cup? :disturbd: How come Wales are getting it?

If the pron channels aren't doing it for me; is this because nagra has worked or viagra has failed?

Will I get a better deal off VM if I threaten to change my energy supplier? :dunce: What about if I threatened to change my boxers? :o:

I didn't have time to write the rest of the questions down - I lost my pen halfway down. :dunce:

As regards not receiving your new card yet a bloke down the pub told me that if you hold a Mastercard under a sun-tan lamp for 44 seconds then put it in your V+ not only will you get all VM's channels for free but you'll also gain access to Bill Gates bank account.

PS don't spread this info about, I was told this gem in the strictest confidence.;)

Like you were also waiting but at least they are getting news out quickerr than they have in the past which is an improvement.
Until quite recently news would be announced via a press release and customers told when they got around to it.
Ive had one or two arguments with HQ staff about it in the past and all they had were excuses and seemed totally convinced there wasnt a problem.
However they do seem to have improved.

There are many probs with VM at the present time, firstly, what Magazine from VM, l don't get one, and secondly, everyone knows that VM are behind with the times concerning letting customers know what is happening.

They think customers have a crystal ball and can see what is happening, what they should do, is have a page telling us, what is happening, the only thing we get is the info from the brilliant Media Boy.

Just because you aren’t as frustrated by this as some others, there is no need to belittle their feelings. And BTW the reason why we should complain is because the way some of us have been treated is shabby. I know that complaining will not change the current situation but perhaps by expressing our dissatisfaction VM will think more carefully about how they handle things in the future.

Fact is the roll out would have happened in the way that it is, there would always be a staged roll out, probably no way round that and yes some of us are going to have to wait a bit longer than others, but what they COULD have done is to have handled the process of disseminating the information better. The fact that we only find out about what is happening through user forums is quite frankly appaling. And my understanding is that some people approaching VM directly to find out this information are not just misled but are given wrong information. This level of service is not acceptable.

If we don’t express our dissatisfaction - and as loudly as we can - then there is no incentive for VM to clean up their act.

I appriciate that user forums are probably not the most effective places to let VM know of our frustrations (I dont for one minute think VM have a policy of monitoring these forums - otherwise they would be better informed (my appologies to the members of VM staff that regularly DO visit and comment on these forums, your input is valuable, I am pretty sure that you do this off your own back and that it is not because of a policy by VM)).

To add validity to our complaints then we should also direct them at VM.
