I think it is unlikely that much in the way of sports will be On Demand. It hasnt been upto date. It is rare that many sporting fixtures shown on the other channels are viewable on their catchup service. Must be something to do with licencing. Anyway most sports fans that I speak to say that if they cant watch it live it loses much of its appeal. Not a big sports fan myself but can see this. (all my opinion - of course)

For this seaosn only i believ ei think espn are goign to to do the work themself for the followign seaosn it would have been a bit hard for them to do it themself with this short of time

Although we at CF are aware of what is on the cards I suspect the average customer is totally in the dark about what is about to be launched and I would assume VM will want to use this as a marketing opportunity.

IMHO, being able to say "here's a bunch of HD channels in July as promised" and now "here's a surprise bunch of sports channels (one of which is HD) in August" has more impact.

Also, ignoring the possible labour overhead, I would imagine that launching in two phases is less risky and easier to put right if anything goes wrong with either launch.

Some pretty good news for us Virgin customers. Definitely worth the wait! And way better than paying £19/£22 a month for the same ESPN services Via Sky.

Bet that's got the satellite chaps a bit worried.

Quite an eventfull couple of weeks for us. We stopped sky sports and movies and made other changes to phone and broadband and saved about £50/month. Then along came picture box, espn, and all these extra hd channels, all at no extra cost.

I beleave ITVHD is still in an exclusive deal with freesat which was the main reason for launching as a interactive streme as appose to a regular channel to make it harder for sky to add it to there service.

ESPN HD FOOTIE ON VM??? CONFUSION??

OK i dont want to burst anyones bubble about EPSN HD but THIS page

http://www.espn.co.uk/sports-on-espn/

SEEMS to suggest ONLY SKY HD will be able to watch the Footie in HD... If you look closley some sports say Sky and VM HD but the Premiership and Scottish PL SKY ONLY HD

Can someone clarify????

This page

http://pressoffice.virginmedia.com/p...434&highlight=

Does NOT IMO make it 100% clear that VM will get the footie in HD.

Have VM made a bad deal look like a good one or what???

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

The page hasn't been updated since the VM deal was announced, it has always said that ever since the ESPN site was updated with that information.

Whilst it isn't clear, I find it very unlikely that ESPN would only broadcast the English and Scottish Premier League games in HD on Sky, this would either require two HD channels or shutting off all signals to cable when the matches are on. This wouldn't be worth their while in any way.

my guess is as they have only just added the extra rights they have won on to the website and the epl and spl was already on the site they just have not ammended them yet you surely cant have a channel that does not allow you to view certain content

LOL VM have deffo pulled a fast one on us it seems...

"If you are already a Sky customer or are thinking about joining Sky you can add the ESPN channel to your Sky subscription. All Barclays Premier League matches broadcast on ESPN will also be available in HD to Sky+ HD customers."

"If you are already a Virgin Media customer or are thinking about joining Virgin Media you can add ESPN & ESPN HD channels to your M, L or XL TV Pack subscription. "

The VM bit says NOTHING about Premier HD ....

http://www.espn.co.uk/subscribe/

VM will be in the **** if people subscribe thinkning they will be getting footie HD and they don't....

If the EPL and SPL in HD were Sky exclusives, they'd have been banging on about it by now. It's an error on the ESPN site, I'm certain of it.

I hope you're right Nook... othrewise VM are going to look shabby in not making thie distinction clear!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I've had a look at the Sky site and there is nothing to say that anything to do with ESPN is exclusive. I'm sure that if Sky had a special deal with ESPN then they'd make sure that their customers and potential new ones know they have something Virgin don't.

It would appear that an internal communication to Virgin staff says:

ESPN HD- Just the same great line up as ESPN - but in glorious High Definition!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

From the VM press release

The ESPN HD channel will offer live Barclays Premier League and Clydesdale Bank Premier League football as well a wide range of international football and top quality sports. It will be available at no additional cost to Virgin Media’s XL TV customers. Sports fans on Virgin Media’s M or L pack will be able to subscribe to ESPN and ESPN HD for £8 per month if they subscribe to any combination of the Sky Sports channels or £10 per month if not.

Seems clear to me !

The plan to make the channels available to Virgin Media’s XL customers will help ESPN better serve sports fans in the UK.
