Re: [Merged] Football talk

Football fans unite for Clubs in Crisis

THOUSANDS of football fans are putting aside tribal differences in a day of unity for clubs on the brink of financial ruin.

On Saturday 29 January fans from all over the country will descend on Wrexham's Racecourse Ground - for their match against Doncaster Rovers - in a mass display of solidarity to tell the Football Association and Football League: "Act now or clubs across the land will go out of existence".

Two months ago more than 10,000 fans gathered at the same ground in a Fans United day to draw attention to Wrexham FC's own plight. The 132 year old club is in financial administration, has been docked 10 points by the Football League and faces eviction from its ground in just 183 days, on 21 July 2005.

Unless a buyer for the club is found Wrexham faces liquidation and will be the first football league club to go out of existence since Aldershot FC in 1992.

Many fans believe the club's plight is due to its owner Alex Hamilton, who wants to sell the ground for over £6 million to property developers and has served the club an eviction notice.

But Wrexham is not alone.

Clubs the length and breadth of the UK are in a similar plight: Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley, Bury, Cambridge United, Dover Athletic, Hendon FC, East Stirlingshire, Gateshead, Grimsby Town, Rotherham and even former Premiership giants Leeds United are all currently facing uncertain futures.

Many more clubs have come close to collapse in the past year - Bradford City, York City and Notts County are high profile examples - while Telford United and Hornchurch FC actually folded.

Fans from all these clubs are now being invited to gather at the Racecourse Ground and stand in their team colours alongside Wrexham and Doncaster fans in what promises to be a festival of a day.

Supporters from other clubs are also urged to attend to show their solidarity in the biggest display of fan unity ever seen. Those that cannot get to the game are asked to send a scarf, banner or team shirt to show support.

A Fans United spokesman and Brighton supporter Nic Outterside said: "It is 12 years since Aldershot FC went bust and in that time many other football clubs have gone to the brink. In many cases these crises have been due to mismanagement or sheer greed by club owners or chairmen.

"When we lost our own ground - sold by our chairman Bill Archer to build a retail park - we came within inches of going out of existence. Even now our club is homeless and survives on a season by season basis.

"The danger of Wrexham folding after 132 years of league football is real, and others are close behind in what could be a domino effect which would see many towns lose their football clubs forever.

"I urge every football fan to take part in the Clubs in Crisis day and tell the Football Association and Football League that the time has come to step in and save the heart of British football."

Simon Johnson of the Wrexham Supporters Trust added: "Football fans have had enough of being ignored. These are our teams and our stadiums and we won't let the incompetence or greed of a few wealthy individuals take them away from us.

"Let us all stand together and show the powers-that-be that we are desperate to safeguard our clubs for future generations and we need their help."

The game against Doncaster Rovers is particularly poignant as the South Yorkshire club were themselves on the brink of extinction in 1998 with spiralling debts, relegation to the Vauxhall Conference and their owner Ken Richardson jailed for conspiring to set fire the club's grandstand.

Bob Gilbert, an organiser and veteran of Doncaster Rovers own fight for survival, said: "Like at so many other clubs, nothing more than personal gain lay behind the ruin of Donny Rovers.

"In seeking that gain one man trampled on the dreams of thousands. And neither he, nor the FA nor the Football League ever cared.

"So I urge you, passionately, to turn up at the Racecourse on 29 January to show all these people that millions and millions of us do care."

has anyone noticed that whenever Arsenal are on Sky now they always refer to them as the champions about 90 times during the program.. I can't ever remember them going on about United as champions as much..

also during the match Toure was seen elbowing Shearer ( not me the one who spells his name wring :D ) in the back.. the ref missed it but it was violent conduct and looked far worse that the Rooney one against Bolton.. will be interesting to see if the FA give him a 3 game ban

Russ 23-01-2005 20:17

Re: [Merged] Football talk

Probably not - Rooney struck a guy in the face which IMO makes it worse.

sherer 23-01-2005 21:02

Re: [Merged] Football talk

Rooney's though had no force behind it at all which is why the other player was also charged.. the Toure one was done with intent and alot more force than Rooney's still i can't see the FA being consistant.. look at the amount of fouls Viera had to do before he got a booking... Bowyer slides in and wins the ball and gets booked straight away

But in fairness, that's mostly because Bowyer's a dirty bugger!

Re: [Merged] Football talk

well it seems now that we have pro ref's getting about 40 grand a week plus 400 for each match they are getting worse..

we have the rooney pen from the arse game, that goal from the spurs one and then the pen last night for Bolton..

of course last nights won't have all the over the top rection about being the worst decision of all time and people won't be saying Bolton should be docked points like Man U were..

personally i think what Diouf did is just as bad as taking drugs to enhance his performance.. after all the results are the same as the team performance is improved.. it's surely worse than Rio when he missed but passed a drug test 24 hours later and i think these divers should start to get 2 year bans.. even if that means we loose Ruud and Ronaldo from our team.. i'd rather have 11 players that stay on their feet..

you only have to watch Soccer Am on sat mornings to see that bit they do with the diving and all the music from Platoon..

i wrote to the FA, UEFA and FIFA once as i don't think any one of these organisations has any understanding of the problem.. if you are walking or running in a straight line then when you fall over you just fall flat on your face not roll over 15 times.. half the time the players aren't touched or injure.. i offered to go to a pitch with these organisations and re-enact these situations in front of them and the refs and then maybe they would see that everyone is cheating but i don't think any of these organisations care as long as they get their money

So, Liverpool through to the Carling Cup Final :erm:

My friend was listening to some football phone-in last week and a very irate Scouser was ranting and raving about the team that had been put out, he'd been a fan for 30 years and what a waste of time it was and a waste of the £30 he'd spent on a ticket, he then claimed that if Bill Shankley was still alive he'd be turning in his grave   Scousers, you've just gotta love them :D :D :D

The Ms didn't play too badly, Chelsea's defence always gets me as excited as any side other than the Reds can do though.

Chelsea are such a clinical side. Mourinho = legend

Russ 27-01-2005 01:31

Re: [Merged] Football talk

I never expected United to win but it was close - we had a clear penalty disallowed and Silvestre almost levelled things at the end.

Give it 2 years and I guarantee Mourinho will be the most hated manager in the league, far more than SAF ever was.

nffc 27-01-2005 01:55

Re: [Merged] Football talk

That wasn't a penalty, the ball went well before Fortune, with his back to goal, took a tumble albeit under a tad of pressure.

Anyway it's about time you lot got some half decent appeals dismissed rather than getting dodgy pens. I'm a firm believer that reffing decisions even out. You've had that Mendes "goal", this evens it.

gazzae 27-01-2005 09:57

Re: [Merged] Football talk

I actually like Mourinho, I think hes good for the game.

Don't think the Fortune one was a penalty, think he went down a bit too easily. How Makelele didn't get sent off for that kick at Ronaldo I'll never know.

The main difference between the two sides was in goal. Chelsea's custodian made several excellent saves, whilst Howard was doing an impersonation of David Seaman v Ronhaldino (sp) in the World Cup, except that Seaman actually did try to reach the ball.:)

Russ 27-01-2005 11:10

Re: [Merged] Football talk

Yep, I'd hazard a guess Howard will be gone by the end of the season. The transfer window has what, another week or so? SAF needs a decent keeper and neither Howard or Roy "it's didn't cross the line!" Caroll are up to the mark IMO.

Actually, while I agree that Howard isn't exactly world class, I thought he had a decent game, and managed to pull a few good saves off. I don't think that he was particularly at fault for Chelseas first goal, because the defence pretty much switched off. As for the second, it has to be said that he just didn't make any decision (let alone the right one).

I thought it was a pretty good game all round (as a neutral) - at least it looked like both teams were actually trying to win it!

I don't think its for how good a player you are, its for what you've achieved. Adams overcame alcohol addiction and also did a lot of work to help other sports people who were battling with their own addictions.

No he didn't buy it. Yes he has spent a lot of money in the past 4/5 years but he had success before he had money to spend at both United and Aberdeen. He hardly had any money to spend when he was in Scotland and yet he won a lot...

With Aberdeen
Scottish Premier League Champions 1980, 1984, 1985
Scottish Cup Winners 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986
Scottish League Cup winners 1986
European Cup Winners' Cup 1983

With St Mirren
Scottish First Division Championship 1977

And no I don't think his attitude reeks, why do you think it does?

With Aberdeen
Scottish Premier League Champions 1980, 1984, 1985
Scottish Cup Winners 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986
Scottish League Cup winners 1986
European Cup Winners' Cup 1983

With St Mirren
Scottish First Division Championship 1977

It's a damn sight easier managing Aberdeen and St Mirren than ManUre though. Fact is, it took him 4 years to even win the FA Cup, a further three to win the league, if he was half decent he would have won it quicker.

And for all his money, he only has one European Cup. And they shouldn't really have been in it that year either.

His keepers, with one notable exception, have ALL been shocking.

Why, all the chelsea and especially arsenal players have a mutual respect for the manager at least.

And I would imagine the FA as well...

If its a damn sight easier managing Aberdeen how come no other manager in in the last 20 years has managed to break the Celtic / Rangers dominance?

Plus he got a European trophy at Aberdeen beating Real Madrid in the final so its not like his success there was all domestic.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Thats the funniest thing I've heard in ages. :D

Where were Utd when Fergie took over? Bottom of the First Division after losing 6 of their first 13 matches and only winning 3. He took them to 11th place that season. The next season, his first full season at Old Trafford he took them to a runners up spot.

He practically had to rebuild the whole squad after Atkinson - look at the team for fergies first game in charge at OT -
Turner, Duxbury, Albiston, McGrath (Olsen), Moran, Hogg, Blackmore, Stapleton, Moses, Davenport, Barnes

hey 1000 posts :D

Nffc is just digging a bigger hole for himself....he can't see past his personal feelings about SAF! :D

I personally think Wengers attitute is worse than Fergies and Mourinho will be up there soon!

Oh, about your comment he bought the success, yeah just like Arsenal have and Chelsea will have if they win the league.....swings both ways mate!

Russ 29-01-2005 00:46

Re: [Merged] Football talk

If anything Mourinho is worst - SAF's UK track record speaks for itself, Wenger is vastly inferior yet has still been moderately successful - Mourinho has not won anything, has not built a team and only really got his break in football from being Bobby Robson's translator.

Once he's actually achieved something in the domestic game THEN he can think about justifying his arrogance.

He is going to have to achieve a hell of alot to justify his arrogance which won't happen. I can't see him staying here for a few years.

What is the big deal over that? We do have the freedom of choice in this country, so they are free to choose to support Utd. :)

You've almost got it right.

We are free to support whoever we want unless it's Man United in which case you must live within 15 miles of Stretford otherwise you are legally obliged at all times to use the title of 'Glory Hunter'....
