Looks like I have been hit too!

What is going on with NTL?

They triple shafted you? Please guys, if you are affected, do try to complain here. http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...e/td-p/1815878

Here are two tracerts taken this morning during the bump. It is looking suspiciously like a peering problem again, at the VM gateway to the shared network.

No idea when that happened, not checked in a couple of weeks.

Coventry is due 120Mb by the end of May brought forward from July, but I am still on 1 channel up.

Why is it when I do a speedtest in IE the ping is 10ms but if I do the test in Google chrome this ping is 19ms ?

I've noticed that some browsers can vary by 10-20ms as well.

Speedtest.net Namesco:

Firefox - 36ms
Chrome - 20ms
Opera - 18ms
IE10 - 16ms

Obviously these are difficult to be 100% sure on, because my ping's all over the place anyway.

Pinging the same server on the command line gives the following results:

Code:

Ping statistics for 85.233.160.167:
    Packets: Sent = 500, Received = 492, Lost = 8 (1% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 85ms, Average = 21ms

Edit: as for why, apart from natural variation, browser plugins can slow you down. FF also runs Flash in a sandbox, which I guess can add latency.

Chrome - 6ms
IE10 - 5ms
Firefox - 6ms

I think you are right regarding differences in flash players, although my PC doesnt seem to show the difference (its a bit of a powerhouse)

I hate you people with stable, low pings. :(

I get good speeds 99.9% of the time, but the upstream utilisation in this area is ruining pings.

Hopefully the 120mbit upgrade in the next month will fix it. I'll not bother holding my breath though.

Im on Sky, thats the difference, to be honest, thats the highest jitter I have actually seen from my connection (1ms) it is usually non existant

Ah, so you are. It's pretty impressive. If I could've gotten FTTC I would have. :(

It'll roll out here eventually, I guess. I doubt VM will have fixed their network by then, so they better enjoy my money while it lasts.

Good point. FTTC upstream (from the Infinity perspective) is much better (less contended) than VM's. It's not a weakness, IMO.
