I really do want to understand why as there are things that I dont like and I respect people who like the things I dont like. I just accept that we are all differnt people who like different things. Thats life

I'm happy to try to explain why ... from my point of view, anyway.

First thing is, there is a difference between the person and the things they like. It is possible for me to respect, and like, someone, whilst at the same time not liking something that they do. When someone in this thread expresses loathing for Big Brother, they are not expressing loathing for you.

In the first three years I was quite a fan of Big Brother. I was interested in it as a social experiment in which people willingly took part in something where the rules and conduct of the game were both reasonable, and reasonably well understood before it began.

I went right off it when they started taking overt steps to create conflict and picking contestants not for the interesting social mix but for the likelihood that they could be relied on to do something outrageous during their stay in the house.

Some of the stuff that has gone on in the BB house in recent years has been degrading and IMO has devalued the people who took part, even if they were too willing to care (or too stupid to notice).

And I find the discussions that go on on this forum, and in the Press, to be utterly distasteful because they reduce human beings to the level of two-dimensional soap opera characters whose value is defined by how willing they are to degrade themselves or act in whatever way the viewer demands in order to derive their entertainment.

I believe prostitution is exploitation even if the prostitute is a willing participant and I believe Big Brother is right there in the same category.

I really do respect your point of view. Your entitled to it as much as the people who like big brother for the reasons they like it.

I cant stand sports or other tv shows but I dont go and moan about them to people who like them.

I like big brother for my own reasons and one is certainly not to see people made a fool of or bullys ganging up on another housemate and like when they are evicted. We all have our reasons for watching different things

Indeed we all do have our own reasons for our choices. However, a thing to bear in mind when posting about the things we choose on an internet forum such as this is, forums are not like the letters page of your local paper where you can have your say on a topic and expect it to go unchallenged. On an internet discussion forum, anything that gets posted is open to be discussed and challenged. That's what the forum exists for.

You should probably go and have a moan in the Football thread occasionally. I do. It's fun. ;)

I do bear in mind that this is an open forum and yes I respect you can have your say and would never stop you but I will speak up for what I do believe in and no I respect the people who post about the topics they like and wouldn't moan about what they like. Thats just me ;)

Going into a thread for the sole purpose of winding people up is the definition of a forum troll ...something someone with a team badge shouldn't be encouraging ;)

Since he made no mention of winding anyone up, your point is ... well pointless. ;)

Yep, I would say that now it really is a done deal. Grauniad is no doubt hacking its way through the press release and will have something up in due course. I imagine the Daily Star will treat it like some sort of major global event tomorrow morning as well.
