Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

We shouldn't be afraid of Sky & under laws, Sky couldn't own/rule every channel/network, even if it owned all the rights in the first place.

No one in the Uk are going to allow Sky to be bullies, even if they think they own all the programes/shows or rights to shows/programes & channels.

Lost Series 3 was bought by Sky, but remember Channel4/E4 & E4+1 had Lost Series 1 & Lost Series 2 & they even bought Lost Series 2 forward.

Virginmedia & Channel4/E4 & E4+1 could easliy but Lost Series 3, & or out bid for futures programes/shows.

Sky bore me, they are slow, over priced & the dishes are horrible & banned under most estate tenant agreements.

Under my tenants argeement I ant allowed Sky or any sat/dishes.

We are only allowed Freeview, Cable, Homechoice, ect.

Viewing figures hadn't vastly increased to justify the extra cash being pumped in, it was allowing more than one person the chance to own a licence that did it.

I know it' slightly different, you can't have 6 packs for one show, but i wonder what would happen if they allowed 3 licences say, priced at half the price of what they accepted from the top bidder. Would be interesting!

The producers can make more from "almost" exclusivity as you say, but the networks make more from exclusivity because of the huge premiums they can place on advertising from the peek viewing figures they would expect.

We're listening
Thanks for taking the time to tell us how you feel. We've had an amazing response, with over 200,000 of you visiting the website, and more than 30,000 of you telling us your thoughts.

We've had a really good look through your messages and the vast majority of comments fit into 4 main categories:

First of all, many of you said that you think Sky has been using unfair or bullying tactics during the dispute, and that you support us in standing up to Sky.

A number of you also said that you're thinking of leaving Virgin Media and switching to another service provider, as you're disappointed to be losing the channels.

There were also many of your comments that suggested we use the money we're saving to either reduce the monthly cost for Virgin Media customers or to invest in new TV content and improve our service.

However, by far-and-away the largest number of you simply think that we should stop getting caught up in headline battles with Sky, and sort the situation out in a way that's fair for everybody. We agree. So here's what's going on right now:

Because we want a fair deal for everybody, we've offered to re-open negotiations using an independent body to oversee talks. Sky refused.
We've forwarded our complaints about Sky's tactics to Ofcom, who deal with companies acting unfairly or illegally in the TV industry. This means we can concentrate on what's important – our customers.
On 5th March, we advised Sky that if an agreement isn't reached within 30 days, we'll pursue action in the High Court. This action will challenge Sky for its abuse of dominance.
As we said, passing our complaints to the proper authorities allows us to get on with making your service as good as it possibly can be. And we've already started. For instance, we're doubling the amount of on demand TV you can watch – from 2,700 hours to over 6,000. That means great shows like Lost, Nip/Tuck, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Six Feet Under – all available as and when you want them. And you won't have to put up with pesky adverts every five minutes either.

We hope this helps explain the issues you've raised, and thanks again for taking the time to get in touch.

Well - It's a big company that replies to mails sent to them!

Big up Virgin Media :tu: and other young sayings... ;)

I agree, and I am surprised!

NTL wouldn't have bothered replying, so this is a step in the right direction for Virgin.

I got an phone call from Sky today asking me to join them. The woman on the phone was talking to me for about 10mins or so. She offers me TWO MONTHS free on Family pack and Sky Sports. When I ask the woman 'Can I keep my Virgin Media phone'? She says 'Sorry you will have to join BT.' Then I told her 'I can't get BT in has I pull a BT line out in 1998. And also I never watch your Sky Basic Channels on Virgin Media anyway.'

Not sounding good there TV boy, the girl didn't know what she was talking about - you can have Sky and a Virgin Telephone line. Why you'd want to keep the over prices under featured line is a whole other debate. :)

From Todays Sunday Times

Quote:

Virgin Media is believed to be losing about 100 subscribers a day as a result of the ongoing war.

Virgin Media said it will allow its TV customers, and those with both TV and broadband, to cancel their contracts during March without having to pay off the full term.

Virgin customers who wish to leave for Sky and who only want TV should go for the latter’s basic package. This costs £15 a month, and the satellite dish comes free. You will also need BT line rental for the digibox, which costs £125 to set up, as well as £11 a month line rental — a total of £26 a month. A switchover could take around a month to complete.

Sky’s key TV, broadband and phone package, the 8Mb “See Speak and Surf”, costs £37 including the BT line rental. The satellite dish is free but there is a £20 activation fee. You get free evening and weekend landline calls as well as Sky One.

While it may be technically possible, I doubt that Sky or Virgin will be actively encouraging people to use Sky services on Virgin lines.

More of an advert than a story ;)

Being discussed here due to the mention of VM's upcoming 20mbps service: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...nd-of-may.html

As for

Completely wrong.

Although that part of the "news story" is talking about moving from Virgin to Sky, it is talking about "Virgin customers who wish to leave for Sky and who only want TV", in which case they would presumably still have (or could have) Virgin broadband & a Virgin phoneline.

You do not need a BT line for Sky Digital - the digibox is quite happy when connected to a Virgin media phone line... all it wants is a phone line, it doesn't care who provides it.

You need a BT line for "Sky Talk" though. And you obviously need one for Sky Broadband (ADSL).

That's not a "real" phoneline though - well, not a normal fixed landline, anyway, like Virgin/BT.

OK, so a Sky box can't use VoIP, but it *can* use a Virgin Media landline, just as it can use a BT landline.
