Does anyone have any stats/ideas on how much online "gaming" contributes to one's max download limit per month?

On a side note...
I'm welcoming the 10mps with open arms as it's significantly faster than my current ntl 3mbs. But am *really* looking forward to some nice upload increase as well. Mainly cos I play online games, at the moment it's BF2. And I usually host a Skype session between mates to chat during the game (we dont like the ingame voip and prefer the easy of skype).

However, hosting a 4+ conference on Skype simply kills the current upload bandwidth while playing BF2. So, according to the BBc link, if NTL is doing this in response to the increased demand for high capacity online multimedia usage, (listed was voip) I assume they have taken into account the need for higher upload speed and not just killer downloads...

:welcome: to the forum hope you enjoy your stay and simply put not a lot :D

For a Start Skype Uses 4K Per Person, so if 1 to 1 chat with a person you will both be using 4K Each. As you host a Conference, the person doing so takes the BRUNT of the Upload and add 4K per person you bring in, so if there is 3 of you chatting away, that 8K you have lost straight away. Imagine 5 of you (the Max), thats 16K - you have sort of used up all your bandwidth if you are on 2mbit/200 for example.

Upload has always been the one they will not upgrade much as the Majority of the people will not use it - I cannot imagine they will be giving 10mbit/1Mbit - but if they do I will be very happy indeed :)

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

I think someone mentioned there being a technical reason why upload has to be increased if the download is increased to 10mb? any experts out there able to shed light on this?

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

someone has mention why earlier on, it is to do with the TCP, when it send a packet of data it waits for a reply before sending the next, now with a 10Mbit connect a 300k upload would be flood with acknowledgment packets.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

When blueyonder were testing 10Mb the upload was only 384kbps and it seemed to work ok. Remember that the upload for BT's 8Mb ADSL will only be 448kbps for home users, so even if NTL only provided 512kbps they could still claim it's faster then what BT can offer.

well will all the upload speeds be the same for each tier because the download speed will be???

ive tried looking for the physicial limitations for the upload speed but coulndt find them (too many pages lol ;) ).. could someone please post again or tell me what page its on

I think => 1mb is a better ratio to the dl.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

this was in an earlier post:
The maximum theoretical download speed possible at a downstream speed of 10Mbps (= 10,000Kbps = 10,000,000bps) is:
10000000 / 1024 * 1460 / 1518 * 1 / 8 = 1174 KB/sec, or just over 1 megabyte per second.

(See http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.....html#kilobytes for explanation of maths)

I recall reading earlier a 10Mb download correctly configured would create a 20k stream of ACKs, poorly configured this could be up to 40k.

Sorry but shouldn't it be

10000Mbits / 8 = 1.125MB per second

No. Look at the link for the reason why.

10? MEG? End? YEAR?

WOW!

Ntl are on fire, by the end of the year so will their network, great news :)

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

Yeah its made me think, a year ago, if anybody said 10mb ntl everyone would have laughed...so we don't know how it will perform, but ntl must be confident enough to roll it out and not just do it on a marketing whim.
