Sure, it might not get to court, but it would result in lawyers. Lots of lawyers. Much simpler for the producer to negotiate a delay releasing the rights to ITV rather than actually trying to withdraw them.

Amazon to Shut Down Freevee (Report)

The reported strategy
Quote:

But when Amazon introduced advertising to Prime Video in January, the decision threw the fate of Freevee into question. With both services already sharing certain titles, Amazon is essentially hosting a similar slate of ad-supported programming on two separate apps.

This redundancy, combined with several other factors, compelled Amazon to wind down Freevee, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The decision could let Prime Video market itself more clearly as a three-tiered service, with Freevee rebranded as its free, ad-supported version, an ad-supported subscription product and an ad-free premium tier with new perks still to come, according to two people familiar with the strategy.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

In fairness, it all seems very speculative with unnamed sources and, what could be, 2+2=5 assumptions. I'm not sure how much sense it makes as a strategy for a streaming business although I can see how it would make things easier for ad sales agencies. Freevee is an AVOD / FAST channel service. All that bringing ads to Prime Video has done is to increase the price of an SVOD service. Offering an ad-supported option to mitigate the price increase, albeit with a reduction in service quality.

Shows have moved though including shows in development and the latest season of Judy Justice is on both Prime Video and Freevee, a new spin Bosch spin off was ordered back in November despite Bosch: Legacy airing on Freevee.

In other Amazon news Lionsgate+ continues via Prime Video Channels for 'a bit longer' after 29th February which is strange.

As you may be aware, Lionsgate is to split into two companies soon. The studio and the streamer. Whether that means Amazon will buy the studio bit, is unknown at the moment, but with its James Bond fronted MGM+ offshoot, I expect all Lionsgate stuff will be on Prime to bolster that.

MGM+ is 100% Amazon owned these days. So why would Lionsgate sell its content to MGM+ and not to the highest bidder?

It's what they did in Latin America and across Europe in former Lionsgate+ regions, former Lionsgate+ subscribers now get a MGM+ branded service instead which will stream leading premier series from Lionsgate and Starz

https://www.digitaltveurope.com/2023...ionsgate-deal/

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/bu...nd-1235367716/

Outlander specifically isn't actually owned by Lionsgate, it's under license from Sony and wasn't on other Lionsgate+ regions

Epix had been fully owned by MGM since May 2017 which Amazon acquired and then both the channel Epix and streaming service 'Epix now' were rebranded as MGM+

Amazon added MGM+ Billy The Kid from MGM Television to Prime this week, Fargo moved from Channel 4 to Prime Video and previously seasons left Netflix in a dozen countries over a year ago.

Because I am assuming that Amazon are going to buy Lionsgate's studio, they're just not in a position to do so yet, until the Lionsgate splt.

And as said by others, Lionsgate material is on Amazon in other parts of the world now. So whether Amazon buy them or not, it looks like their futures are now intertwined.

I think the likes of SKY as we know it are on borrowed time tbh, we will see a overhaul of pay tv in the very near future, vm, ee and SKY are already going that way by including other subscriptions such as Netflix, paramount+ into their tv packages.
No OB this isn't the death of linear tv, that will continue on.

I don’t know what makes you so sure. It’s up to the broadcasters whether they think it is worthwhile to continue to maintain their scheduled channels.

I think they will view the linear channels to be more trouble than they are worth, but we’ll see.

That’s why the correct thing to do is to have a free AVOD version of all streamers. People subscribing to an entertainment service do not wish to have advertisements added. Sky is an absolute ripoff for introducing and maintaining this practice. But even Sky might be starting to come around to this view.

Awww bless. Do you still believe that?

They’re all mining your data so they can sell it to Tesco. There will be more profits made selling you to advertisers than television to you in the long run.

Big bad Sky didn’t invent TV advertising. None of the entertainment channels on their platform went without advertising revenue, just as there won’t be a streamer doing it either.

There are major changes coming, no doubt about. Hence my perhaps comments about Max launching and Sky Atlantic closing.

All the main media cos are talking to each other at the moment and there could be some big announcements ahead. If Paramount isn't sold this year, it will go bankrupt. It owes a debt repayment about now. They are talking to Warners and Comcast about merging.

One option on the table is for the running of Paramount+ and Max to be taken over by Netflix or fully absorbed by them. But Comcast wants to ruin that party, so I doubt that will happen.

Come April when certain regulatory restrictions on Warner expire, I would expect to start hearing things around then. Most pundits reckon that Comcast will take over Warners, so Sky Atlantic may still live and Max may never see the light of day here. And around the same time, we'll hear whether Elon Musk will make his move on Disney.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

As for Paramount they have held discussions with Comcast about a partnership or a joint streaming venture like Sky Showtime.

https://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2024...mcasts-peacock

The only confirmed talks of any company merging was WBD and Paramount although they couldn't really do anything official until 8th April.

Horizon 25-02-2024 21:42

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

I don't see it happening.

The consensus, if you can call if that, was that the Paramount/Warner announcement was to draw out Comcast, which it did. A lot of pundits believe that Comcast will spin off Warners into NBC Universal and as part of the deal, eliminate the Warners debt.

In the end, I see their ultimate home as being within Microsoft or one of the other tech giants.

Why would Sky have a free streaming service of content but have adverts on the linear channels AND charge subscribers for that content too?

What you might get is a Sky Mix catch-up service with older content on it to compete with the likes of Amazon's Freevee and UKTV. But not premium content like True Detective or Game of Thrones yet. That's reserved for subscribers.

So much for there being less streamers with the anticipated consolidation of the media companies.

How can they all survive and more to the point, with the ad revenues going to these American streamers, what's left for our broadcasters?

I've probably been slow on seeing this but whilst sorting out my Now TV subscriptions today and for anyone not aware I noticed that they are offering Sky Sports for £21 a month for 12 months with no minimum term contract.
This seems a pretty good offer to me, especially as Now has all red button sports content finally.
Comcast's takeover of Sky seems to be a good thing so far, the service now works perfectly after many years of bugs and glitches under the previous ownership and the prices have gone down,
I now get Sports, Entertainment, Cinema and Boost for £30 a month, (with Boost I could share the costs with others hint hint).
Imho this is the best streaming deal in the country apart from the fiver I pay on top of my EE phone bill to get TNT Sports and Discovery Plus.
I am no fanboy and others may disagree but I feel Now and other British streaming services to a lesser extent are shaming the sharp practices of the US streamers.

I only have entertainment from Now as get Sky premiums through Virgin but it has always intrigued me that some of the more evangelical streamers would prefer an American big tech firm or someone else to get major UK sports rights.

Now is a bargain for what it is.

The introduction of adverts on Amazon Prime has led me to think that it might be time to part ways with Amazon. I'm not paying a 33.33..% price increase to get the ad-free experience I previously had and, frankly, adverts annoy me to the extent that I haven't watched a single programme/film on rime since they were introduced..

Amazon have gone of of their way to 'reassure' people that the number of adverts would be nowhere near that we see on television - YouTube tends to show two commercials at a time - so I am wondering how many adverts you generally get in, say, a one-hour programme on Prime and does the number you get depend on the programme/genre you are watching? Also do the pop up randomly or do you get some indication as to when they might appear?

HBO MAX launch for UK is still coming but a deal with SKY is still possible
Warner Bros. Discovery is doubling down on its plan to bring Max (formerly HBO Max) to the UK, despite the challenges posed by the existing licensing deals with Sky.

However, the media giant also hinted at the possibility of maintaining a content partnership with Sky, suggesting that the two companies may explore new collaboration models even after Max’s launch.

Gerhard Zeiler, president of Warner Bros. Discovery International, spoke about the company’s UK strategy at the MoffettNathanson media conference yesterday, as first reported by Deadline.

“We want, we need to, and we will launch Max in these three markets,” Zeiler stated, referring to the UK, Germany, and Italy.

“These are three of the most important markets outside of the US. There is no reason we should not do that. Why should we disadvantage ourselves by not launching Max?”

Probably Max possible the ads tier included with Sky Entertainment replacing Discovery+ and integrated into Sky, no need for both.

Probably likely to available via Prime Video Channels looking at France although premium 4K tier at €13.99 not available via Prime for now.

Prime wouldn't be the only way as people are getting wise to the scam that is prime channels, it is a scam as you need prime in order to add them.
Whereas just subscribing through the networks apps direct doesn't require prime.

I agree

I wouldn't subscribe to Prime Video Channels if it doesn't have 4K option anyway when it's available directly than the app.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

This is probably too late for many people but a word of warning about tonight's heavyweight boxing PPV,
I went to order tonight's boxing on Sky Box Office but found out you have to be a Sky or Virgin TV customer the event is not available on the online player,
a quick Google search showed its also available on DAZN for £24:95 so I ordered it on there with the added "bonus" of 1 months free access to all of DAZN's non existent content, however once ordered and after checking my account details I find that I will be charged another £24:95 next month and that I have to give 30 days notice to cancel this payment!
However trying to cancel is proving to be somewhat impossible, after rejecting their offer of "only" paying £14:99 a month in exchange for a 12 month contract I am now forced to use their chat service and no-one there is chatting!
Avoid these shysters, I wish Google had shown me TNT is also airing the fight tonight!
Thankfully I used PayPal to pay so if they continue ignoring me I can just cancel the subscription there.

EDIT:
Eventually someone did chat and spent over half an hour ignoring my requests to cancel my account and to not bother with offers I don't want, finally they very kindly allowed me to cancel my account but informed my I'd be subject to an additional fee at the end of my subscription!
After telling them I would open a PayPal dispute and report DAZN to OFCOM they very generously said no additional fees will apply to me!

I remember on Sky the TV was 18 months but the BB was 24 months gor a while. Used to make it a nightmare for discounts etc.

I suspect there's nothing more nefarious than aligning for that reason. If the broadband market of Openreach based products are moving to 24 months to get a return on costs of FTTP to maintain a competitive price point per month Sky have to do the same.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

Now TV have released UHD and HDR on some of their content via a new Boost tier called Ultra Boost which is £9 a month, however if you're currently on a Boost offer they are upgrading you to the new tier for the remaining time on your offer (in my case I will be getting it for £2 a month until the end of December :) :) , then it will be £6 a month.
It also includes Dolby Atmos sound on some content, however the current Boost will now only allow you to stream on 2 devices a month whereas Ultra Boost remains at 3.

I've tried it on my Roku sticks and the UHD content works very well, also I'm pleasantly surprised to find it also works on the LG TV webOS app when Boost previously didn't even include 50fps on the sports channels.

got my 360 tv and everything is fine except i can't get to the menu screen when i click the home button on my Toshiba remote.

i have to go to "back AV" in order to get the menu screen up to switch on my Bluetooth headphones. i used to be able to be on my v6 and get to the menu screen on the Toshiba remote.

Any idea why this has happened...its not an issue now i know i can go to the av screen and get it up that way just curious!

Try disabling CEC in the TV's menus. Toshiba might call it CE-Link or Regza Link

Thanks. Worked a treat. Toshiba has an interface that would not be out of place in a Freeview box from 2003!

No, that's not possible. The best you can do is apply a filter to the recording list "Recorded on this box".

You can fine tune the recordings between boxes by clicking on the red Record button, then on the next screen click Advanced Options, then on the next screen click on Choose TV Box, then select the box, then click on Record. That program will then be recorded on that box going forward, even if the default recording box is one of the others

When setting up a new series link go to Advanced and select which box you want the recording to be made on. It will then be recorded on that box going forward. If though you've already got a series link set up for a particular program and want to change it so it will record on the other box then you need to cancel that series link, and then set it up to record again, using the advanced options when you press record.

I'm guessing the preference is to have one recording box and the rest as slaves. Assume new customers get this as standard.

The fact VM are upgrading V6 box software to 360 seems to be causing some long winded workarounds due to multiple hard drives.

I'll stick with my V6's for now, the more I read the more I'm not inclined to make the move to 360

When VM say 'upgrade' , I've learnt to avoid it over the years.
The 360 is a downgrade and so is voip for landlines.

Delayed at Govts insistance, as it puts vulnerable people at risk.
I'm keeping hold of my SH2, no phone port, so they can't 'upgrade' me.

cheers for this. so I've selected a random show and selected my box. will this mean it doesn't show on any other boxes under recordings? or just that its been recorded physically on this box but can be viewed on other boxes and is visible on other boxes etc

Yes, all can record. Usually things will record on whichever box you set the recording from.

To find out where recordings are stored, go to Recordings, then do View All. Press the Home button and change the filter from "Recordings" to "Recorded on this Virgin TV box"
