Media going OTT on city. They were lucky to get out of an easy group. They're supposed to be the champions of England, that group should've been straightforward for them and they struggled big time. I'll be surprised if they make it through the next round.

To be fair, Jones and Evans are returning after a long time out injured. You look at the number of times we've had to change our defence and then compare it to how many times Chelsea have, its laughable.

I still don't know why they haven't given De Gea a new contract. Hes been our best player by a distance so far this season, its only a matter of time before other clubs (Madrid) start talking about him.

The De Gea situation certainly is worrying. For too long the PL has been just a list of feeder clubs for Real Madrid and with Valdes hanging around Carrington I'm really hoping LVG isn't thinking we can make do with selling him. I can't see VV a good replacement.

Clearly not too well. Gallas scored that goal.

Henry was not the first or last person who didn't own up to a handball leading up to a goal. It happens all the time. What did everyone expect him to do? Go to the referee and say it wasn't a goal, that he had handballed it? It would have been a great act of sportsmanship but also an extremely rare one. Ireland themselves won a dubious penalty in the run up to the qualifiers and amazingly Robbie Keane didn't refuse to take it out of sportsmanship either. Roy Keane said it best: http://youtu.be/IMHwCbbG6WY

Thankfully that one incident hasn't become all he is famous for however much some had hoped it would in the aftermath.

Not in a million years. If we're going to be optimistic then maybe - just maybe - we could catch City. It would involve us riding our luck on a huge scale but it's possible.

But catching Chelsea? No way. Unless they crap out completely, which I can't see happening. When we start winning games based on performance and not a combination of luck and the opposition playing poorly we'll be contenders. I still reckon we'll finish third or fourth, second at a push.

What's the betting Premier bosses close this loophole soon?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/foo...rmer-club.html

Tom Cleverley will serve his one match ban against Man United. A fixture that under the terms of his loan agreement he would not have been allowed to play in, as it is against his parent club. So he can serve the ban during this fixture and be back for the fixture after that.

I personally don't have a problem with this, but I bet that someone somewhere in the Premier League will want this loophole shut down.

A more reasoned response to TH's retirement from Oliver Brown in todays Telegraph.

Hooray for Henry but some perspective needed
Officially, he has only been retired for a day, but I am already over the Thierry Henry love-in. I am through with sentences that begin, "The word legend is often overused, but in this case...", done with the endless replays of that comeback Arsenal goal against Leeds United. He was the most majestic striker, but his £4 million-a-year Sky contract – with the proviso that he is still able to cover major tournaments for the BBC – is absurd in its lavishness.
Yes, he remains the Premier League’s fourth highest goalscorer, but on the all-time list since 1888 he ranks a distant 43rd. Some perspective, please.

Derek Llambias appointed Rangers chief executive. Whomever suggested Ashley was looking to buy Rangers and sell Newcastle off is not looking so silly now.

For the time being theirs two iconic clubs under the wrath of the fat man, disgrace. The quicker they ban this bloke from having anything to do with football the better.

Rangers find themselves in a position where they literally have no money coming in and have no choice but to take anything Ashley will give. Ashley will complete the purchase before or during the summer if not sooner and then offload Newcastle. The milking of rangers will then sadly start.

The milking of Rangers started a long time ago, the whole saga stinks, and I very much doubt the current batch of arrests and court cases will be the last.

If they don't get promoted this season, and I personally think they won't, it'll be interesting to see if the most incompetent football administrators in the world redesign the leagues to bring them up.

I read that they couldn't actually afford to pay Ally off. Pretty dire situation to be in that's got Ashley licking his lips. Ashley will bail rangers out just like he did to Newcastle, problem being it's much cheaper to balance Rangers and from a personal experience his intentions are far from pleasing or winning over fans. Once he has control of the club you've pretty much surrendered it. I mean if Ashley ran Rangers like Newcastle and turned profit then there's little to stop Rangers becoming the equal dominant force in Scottish football again but they'll be tagging a giant sports direct billboard beside them at all times. Ashley is looking for a club that can 1) be had easily. 2) Win silverware without huge investment, 3) can guarantee European football and thus European advertising.

Newcastle can't offer that given the money in England is massively different to that in the SPL. Rangers could win the league with the money he's given Newcastle.

That's my guess on the whole matter.

Great game at OT yesterday, some nicely worked goals, Jones and Mc Nair getting in each other's way all the time led to the usual chaos at the back. The Toon offered very little going forward though thankfully.

A terrific atmosphere, ground packed out with both sets of fans giving it some. :)

Colin's gone. I don't suppose you can defend like we did yesterday, then come out afterwards and say our next opponents will be looking forward to playing us and expect to keep your job! Probably the right decision but the timing, before a massive game at QPR tomorrow and three days before the transfer window, leaves a bit to be desired.

Not for us. Since the current board took over in 2010 George Burley was sacked at Christmas after we looked headed for League 1, and we survived. Then Dougie Freedman left for Bolton and Ian Holloway took us up. Last year Ian Holloway left after we were mauled at home by Fulham, Pulis kept us up, ruining your title charge in the process, whilst Fulham were relegated. I know all the arguments about being able to build in the long term but for a lot of clubs that's pie in the sky.

The key is bringing in the right replacement. Pulis was perfect, Warnock wasn't so I'm 50/50 on whether the board will get it right, but the chairman's comments in the wake of this latest sacking have made it clear that Warnock had lost the players.

Shame, but he was out of his depth. Any fool can stick 3 past Liverpool's defence, but Burnley showed how to play against Southampton, and it's a way we have the players for, as we showed last season. Conceding the sort of goals we did yesterday in a game that this crop of players is capable of getting something from is pretty unforgivable. We might still go down, but it is still the right decision.

I may be be a bit slow on the uptake here, but why would you sign someone on a permanent contract, who had been on loan to you since August, just to then loan him out to another club? It seems to be a long winded way to get a loan player from Atletico Madrid.

I'm guessing AM getting Torres (albeit temporarily) had to be part of the deal for Cerci. Plus it's a chance for Torres to find his form again after Chelsea crapped him out.

It'll have to be someone with the puppet strings already attached. Also needs to be able to read from a script as good as Pardew could. Look Alan! We've got one over the line. Good riddance.

Steve McLaren? Is that the rumour for Newcastle? Yes, he'll be a hundred times better than Pardew and Newcastle will finish well above Palace! England is a sad stain on an otherwise very decent managerial career, but in the last thirty years only Robson and Hoddle have come close to getting it right with England. Derby are looking awesome. If Newcastle get between £2 and £5m to rid themselves of Pardew and pick up McLaren in his place they can be well chuffed with business.

Shot down instantly, No idea which media outlet took it upon themselves to write such rubbish. Steve Bruce is the bookies favourite followed by McClaren as the local favourite.

Media favourites are

De Boer - Possible if they remain in caretaker charge till the season finishes. Why he'd want to manage Newcastle is beyond me.

Benitez - Nope.

Pulis - The more likely in the list.

Fabricio 'I want to go home, no I want to stay but I'm not happy and my form has declined massively since, Collocini. Nope

Sherwood - More likely bar Pulis.

No one has really taken into consideration that it actually doesn't matter who's in charge because they're stuck with Ashley until this Rangers saga concludes. Ashley has the final say in everything, Graham Carr is the one really dealing with the incoming players and the manager is just there to put them on the team sheet and oversee training sessions.

Pardew was the most obvious puppet manager if I've ever seen one. The amount of times he spoke about that invisible line they were trying to get over

I can't see Pulis wanting the Newcastle job in its current form. Or the West Brom job either, for that matter. For Steve Parish read Mike Ashley read Jeremy Peace. Unless Pulis has got very very real over the last few months he's still some way from his next job.

Pulis would be the one to bring Newcastle some silverware.

fans would hate him and his hoofball and he never won anything and they haven't since 1955

Re: Football Season 2014/15

I agree, he wouldn't win anything at Newcastle. His Stoke team were loss making and had a diminishing points return during their time in the Premier League. He left Palace because he couldn't accept the constraints on our transfer policy, and he won't work well at a club which is realistically a business based on signing cheap young foreign talent and then selling them on at the first hint of a profit.

He hasn't done enough for a big club to give him the full running, and no small club could afford to.

Across about 210 Premier League games, Pardew has a better win % than Pulis, fwiw.

Adzii nufc is right - the manager isn't the problem at Newcastle.

Sherwood wouldn't work at Newcastle neither. His big mouth being the problem.

Would Mike Ashley have taken David Moyes had he been out of work?

Better question would be could David Moyes accept being told what to do and say. Ashley isn't going to hire someone that's going to tell it straight when interviewed. Every manager under the Ashley regime was a personal friend or promoted from the inside of the club. Can't see it being much different this time round. Shouldn't surprise anyone if carver is the next permanent manager.

Re: Football Season 2014/15

Moyes was a character not many bothered messing around with though, prior to his Man Utd stint that is. Fans accepted he was the man and trusted his command so the lack of investment was dampened.

And the same old Liverpool who cannot even keep a two nil lead against the bottom of a table side.:(:td:

I haven't watched a second of the game only read comments. Was Arsenals defending was woeful? I suspect Southampton caused mayhem.

My daughter reckoned it was the first time you had your first choice back four playing.

Your goalie was partly at fault but Mane's strike for the first was awesome.

I have to say you didn't look like a top four side, once the second goal was in heads went down.

We played better against Chelsea.

I'm not sure about the backline. Possibly.

How did the score remain at 2-nil? Did the two infront of the backline work, Chambers and Coquelin

Scez did a Almunia, ran out, didn't get the ball. Less left stranded as Mane lobbed it over him.

I think he has been ok for the last few games. Especially against West Ham. It's just he loses his head like this occasionally, as you said it was overdue. Ospena will be in goal for the FA Cup but might be worth dropping Szczesny for a bit.

Schneiderlin got himself banned so he didnt have to play against you.

He will be a good asset to your team. :)
