The launch date I have for Sky Sports HD is still subject to change and I have still to get it 100% confirmed.

So it will stay under DNP until I can get the info 100% confirm.

The date I have is within July 14th to July 19th.

Not sure what to make of it but a lovely lady from virgin media just phoned me for a service review, don't know if that's because my initial 18 month contract has ended or something else, she sounded gorgeous though.

So as you have already ruled out 17th, it must be the 15th, as that is the Tuesday.

Unless of course Sky are calling the shots on this one and it's Monday!

So there isn't a DNP. It's self imposed?

Ps on another note about the survey that is going around did anyone mention that it asks about Netflix at no extra cost and also about game of thrones on Sky Atlantic?

Not sure if this link will work but here is the survey?

It would appear to be same survey I received, yes.

Ch4 +1 HD and 4seven HD will be available on freeview, the only real barrier to launch on other platforms is if there is a period of exclusivity.

A suggestion in this article is that the Premier League may make more matches available. The article reminds us that 45% more matches are shown now than 10 years ago ago (106 v 154) but states there is scope yet for far more to be shown.

1andrew1 03-07-2014 09:25

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

The article also suggests that those who feel they now have to pay to two providers for all matches have not realised that by staying with just Sky Sports they would still have more matches today (116) than they would have had 10 years ago. The price per match would have been equivalent to £3.03 in 2004 and £2.81 in 2014.
I'm not a Sky supporter but find the calculations often show different outcomes to a lot of posters' perceptions.

I think Channel 4 +1 HD will be axe to give slot to E4 HD or Film4 when deal with Sky and Virgin are up.

But 4Seven HD may launch on both Virgin and Sky when deals are up.

(When signed E4 HD or Film4 HD may move to More TV Pack.)

Well Sky have raised prices as follows
£1 for entertainment pack
£1 for entertainment+ pack
£2.50 for Sky sports 1+2 pack
50p for sky movies pack

Those are the price rises.
This might give us a idea of virgins price rises when they come.

I wouldn't have thought that there was, AFAIK these HD variants of existing services have only been created to fill new (temporary) capacity that nobody else seems to want.

Freeview is an open platform, it doesn't have the budget to make channels exclusive. However, if Channel 4 got a great deal then it might be viable for Channel 4 to make these channels available on Freeview but not on other platforms where it would have to bid for capacity against pay-TV broadcasters.

That is a good summary indeed. The prices i posted were from the letter i got this morning.
Either way i'm still canceling in October once my contract is up as for me it's not worth the money as i'm not watching anything on it lol.

Indeed MM one would hope the next rise would not be till next year but l have a bad feeling about this and one must hope those portents don't come true.

Which is sort of what I was hinting at, CH4 may have got the muxes dirt cheap for a while to make it worth their while.

Virgin do the following every year:

Sky Sports and Sky Movies goes up on October 1st - still to be confirmed for 2014.

The base packages (M, M+, L and XL) goes up in February to April every year.

It also strengthens Channel 4's negotiating hand with VM and Sky - they will be keener to get them now that they're on Freeview and YouView.

Indeed. Very odd to a give a minority channel such a prominent slot.

VM needs to have a rethink on this. It puts all the other Sky Sports channels out of "synch". Sky Sports 1 on ch502 doesn't work and will result in confusion and MANY calls to VM call centres and I know that VM love such calls....

Good deal for Sky as well it gives all their channels good prominence , how many channels per page does the TIVO guide display , if it's 8 like the Sky EPG the changes to the entertainment section will see the Sky Entertainment channels at the top of page 2.

This would be better -

Sky Sports (On the move):

Base on that post from 7pm tonight.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35...-post2326.html

Sky Movies channels on Virgin Media are just moving channel numbers to have the same lineup as Sky viewers but starting with an 4.

On that list Channel 160 is free from July 15th so maybe Sky Living +1 will move to channel 160 on that day.

Cheers for the info, MB

Putting SSN on 501 is a bit strange, 500 would have made more sense if they wanted to put it before the other sports channels....Those VM bosses do have some strange ideas :dunce:

I don't think the channel numbers are that big of a deal, and besides, Sky Sports News must be the most watched of all of them. It must make sense from Sky or Virgin's point of view. At least they're all together.

Much more important to my mind is the between 101 and 299. I bet there are people who don't realise they have some of those channels in hd.

---------- Post added at 09:49 ---------- Previous post was at 09:45 ----------

Looking at Sky's epg it looks like theirs goes 1, 2, 3, 4, news, f1, 5. I'm not sure that makes much sense either.

Its no big deal as far as l am concerned as SSN is the first channel l check of Sky's.

As 160 sits next to the channel being used for local TV, could be this will be used where franchise areas need to carry more than 1 local channel.

The clearing of 140 may be to facilitate the adding of 4HD+1 at a later date.

To be fair SkySports 5 hasn't launched yet , I'm quite sure then when sky does a reshuffle that they will sort it, but to be actually changing channels about and come up with that... Ps I do think 500 would be great for ssn.

I know that VM don't want to be seen as working in Skys shadow, but what do people think of VM completely aligning their channel numbers with Sky?

A lot of people get used to the channel numbers of their favourite channels, so this would make it easier and could be a selling point to encourage potential customers to move over.

I doubt Sky could object, or indeed would as they could use the same tactic to VM customers ie changing over is a little less painful.

I don't mind VM having different EPG numbers, I have been with VM for nearly 5 years now, so I have completely forgotten the Sky EPG numbers.

For me, they just need to be in a more logical order...The SD Channel, the +1 version, then the HD version...I would prefer the HD first, but thats personal preference.

Having SS1 as 502...is not logical on my behalf...everyone is different of course.

That's true, just having the channels is the important thing.
I always filter by HD so I don't mind the actual EPG number, having them in a logical way is just a bonus.

I'm just looking forward to the first golf tournament after the channels come which will be the Russian Open on 24 July. The definition is not bad in SD, but I find in HD you can see the contours of the green much clearer and sharper.

Not at all, on the whole sky's channel numbering is a mess with +1's all over the place, living and Livingit are miles apart - I prefer VM numbering, if they had HD swap it would be even better, I just think they have got this one massively wrong.

Massively?

I really think there's been an overreaction here. Pressing 502 requires the same effort as pressing 501 and once they've been in place a little while people won't even realise. Besides which I have no doubt that epg placement was part of the negotiation and, for whatever reason the numbering has been agreed and is desired by at least one of the parties.

More to the point we will soon have all Sky Sports channels in hd. Virgin deserve a bit of credit for pulling off a deal nobody else in the UK has so far managed.

Can't understand why people get so hung up about the EPG and channel loacations , I generally just enter the desired channel number or go into the HD section of the EPG usually a few presses of the channel up/down has me on the desired page , let's be honest if you have HD why use the SD version.

My thinking is that it would be easier to remember the channel number to start with if they were aligned and people swapped from one platform to another.

Also, it would make it easier when channels are marketing themselves.

Well, it does seem sensible to have Sky Sports 1 ending with a one etc to make things a little easier. If you know the sports channels start with a uniform number and/or know the EPG number of your favourite Sky Sports channel, it does make it quicker and easier to figure out the EPG position of other channels.

However, if Sky's EPG is a mess (and the fact that, unlike VM, Sky has to allocate EPG numbers in a fair, reasonable and non discriminatory manner) my suggestion may not be feasible.

I'll create a poll to see what people think, if it's a 'yes' verdict, I'll mention it to my main VM contact. (I don't like to talk shop too often as I only see him at social occasions these days).

The poll can be found here:

Sky does not allocate EPG numbers. They are traded between broadcasters.

Indeed they did.

You would have thought once they sold the channels they would have moved Sky Living down and the Channel 4/Channel 5 channels up.

This makes sense, too, I guess.

It's a bit of both really, new HD slots are allocated by Sky. Old SD slots are traded between broadcasters and may end up staying where they are or reallocated a number by Sky if another genre section is more appropriate.

I remember the old sites.

I never use HD channels to record from, as this eats up space on my V+ box.

Sometimes I watch HD channels whilst watching live TV, as, even though I only have a SD set, I believe that this still shows a better picture because the source is of a better quality.

I guess the V+ downscales the HD channels to make this possible. I find the SD channels useful for recording as recording in HD just eats up disc space.

If VM were to get rid of the SD channels, they'd have to replace the box for customers still using SD boxes. As VM own their own network, they won't have to pay for the extra bandwith (unlike Sky), so it may be more cost effective for them to keep things as they are, unless capacity becomes an issue.

Does anybody know what % of customers are still using SD boxes?

Spoke at length to them including about this forum. The strapline some up the comment on postings from an "insider " the last refers to if true ( the insider) then believing that it is real means .....

me I go with #2

This is clearly in the wrong thread since it's an anagram of the meaning of life.

Itshim often pops in to gratuitously tell us how much we are all wasting our time in this thread, but I must admit that this was one of his more bizzare posts :D

OK for "whatever" you wish to be called in simple english.

He is a liar , a fantasist, or fool (someone is pulling his leg big time.)

Anyone caught "leaking" company information would be fired. Do really think a member of staff is that crazy.

There are many web sites that disseminated the sort of "facts" posted. Without claiming insider information.

I choose to look here to get the facts from a single source but of late these seem to be sadly missing.
I have been on the site since NTLhell days before that I had Cabletel & Rediffusion.

On the channel number it strikes me as really sad that it matters at all. Just put the ones you like in favorites, if you can not read well enough to look all the time:erm:

Leaking information is a very good way of putting information into the public domain that you're not necessarily authorised to do but is to your advantage. Are you really that naive that you think it doesn't happen?

Exactly, this is done frequently in business and by political parties.

I think Itshim is under the impression that all channel launches are some sort of top secret information. Most launches aren't commercially sensitive to be treated as such. Any channel launches that are sensitive ARE embargoed. The only times I have come across this was for the BT Sport channels, the return of the Sky basics and the discussions to bring the remaining Sky Sports HD channels to VM. I have known my main contact since university days and was unable to get any information from him.

For most other channels, it matters not if advance notice of their launch gets out.

If I can give some examples. Re: The Africa Channel. I gave the heads up to members about this impending launch and the new date when this was put back.

VM are aware that this launch was never going to set the world of broadcasting alight, so I doubt they could have cared less (and the subsequent comments on here about this addition appear to back this up!) The Africa Channel themselves were aware of this "leak" and weren't at all concerned- they even sent me a CD :D

When the forum was busy with speculation about BT Sports, however, it was a total lockdown.

Another member flagged up the impending launch of CBS Action as VM had included this in the forthcoming monthly list of channels in the channel guide.

Does Itshim think that VM would have done this if they were at all bothered? On the other hand, I doubt that any contract would allow them to give advance notice of Sky Atlantic.

To summarise, Itshim is right in the sense that VM will do all it can to stop any sensitive channel launch/information from getting out (that's not to say that it won't, leaks by employees of various companies can and do happen all the time). For most channel launches this is simply not applicable.

Rumour: Sky Sports and Sky Movies apps may launch by August.

Steams for the Sky Sports and Movie channels may launch on mobile devices by August.

However, unlike the other channels the Sky Sports and Movies will not be accessed through the Virgin TV Anywhere app.
