.

Imo mate no, Netflix has far more choice and on Amazon you do have to pay extra for some content too.

VM wouldn't test something like that on a set of customer boxes before a deal was done.

Agreed. The OP said it was being tested on some Tivo boxes which could be true. Presumably VM would test internally first before signing a deal or testing with customers. It's all about the interpretation of "some".

I think it's coming to VM, theone, but not for a while yet. VM are definitely interested in getting Amazon Instant.

I know the week that Virgin hope to launch them but cant post that info.

Sky1 +1, Pick +1, Sky Sports News HD and Sky News HD may launch on the same day.

But even if it was testing internally it wouldn't be anything Customer Services would know about, as those sort of things don't get briefed out to them

This is what makes me now think the cs rep i spoke to was possibly just telling me that it was being tested to get me to re-activate my tv services.
Didn't work though lol - yet anyway.

Virgin are certainly looking into it. I was on the VM website the other day and a popup box asked me to take a survey about VM. Some interesting questions and the whole survey was geared towards online and on demand content. One of the questions asked: Have you ever used Amazon Instant Video/Love Film Instant? I clicked yes and was then asked to rate certain things such as value for money, choice and usability. Yes it was 3 questions in a survey of 20+ but it shows they are at least looking into it.

Keep an eye out for:

Eurosport and Eurosport HD to move to new channel number. So that Virgin can make room for Sky Sports News HD and Sky Sports F1 HD to launch. It may take some days/weeks to do. Virgin did move Sky Sports 4 and Sky Sports News an day BEFORE adding Sky Sports 1 HD and Sky Sports 2 HD.

MB any indication the extra money for HD channels will be dropped by VM? at the moment we pay extra for sky sports hd etc. Will the increase in sport hd channels decrease this or increase this additional charge?

Haha long shot i know

Sky sports news hd will be good. No point in sky withholding sky news hd either as we already have bbc news in hd

I think Sky Viewers need to pay extra for Sky Sports HD channels too.

As far as I know Virgin have no plan increase for Sky Sports HD.

After all Sky Movies HD is £7 per month with 11 channels.

I'd speculate that if these channels were offered, that we'd be invited to up our HD tax to £10 if we want all in HD. But it's not beyond the realm of possibility that both SN & SSN will just be placed in XL and stay outside the HD tax.

In lots of things I agree with you, it does. But I was specifically referring to the broadcast rights market where territory restrictions are commonplace. What I meant was, have Amazon got the rights to stream HBO shows in the US market only or does this extend worldwide?

The report is on an American site, reporting to it's (largely) American readers.

It doesn't relate to the UK but demonstrates that HBO and Amazon are working very closely together. Fire TV was launched in the USA with very little notice, so the same could happen here.

That's correct see link

The deal is limited to the US at present. In the UK BSkyB owns the rights to much of HBO's back catalogue.

I do honestly think Sky should reduce the HD charge on VM if they want to deal with the competition from BT. I know BT currently offer less channels / content but you get SD & HD all in for £15.

On Sky, Sky Sports Collection is £22 plus £5.25 if you want HD (£27.25 for both SD & HD). On VM it's £27.25 for just the SD and then an extra £7 if you want HD (£34.25 in total). So it costs approx. 25% extra on VM. :Yikes:

I think they'd probably see an increase in the number of subscribers to the Sky Sports Collection on VM if they removed the HD charge or at least dropped it to say £3 to bring the price in at around £30 all in.

I do subscribe for a month here and there but would definitely consider keeping it more often if it was less than £30 per month including HD.

However, I appreciate it's unlikely to happen but the more the price keeps going up, the more people are going to start cancelling. :redcard:

On Sky you have to be on the top priced pack which is 'Family' also called 'HD basic' without this you can't add HD Sky sports, this effectively means that the cheapest price to get Sky Sports HD is £59 a month ( family HD basic + HD pack + sky sports collection)

Virgin is cheaper to get Sky sports in HD because you don't need any other channel packages to buy it.

The competition is coming on all fronts for Sky none more so than the sporting rights , Den posted an interesting link earlier today. Hopefully these offers on premiums will be more frequent , as you say VM XL sub's include BT Sports in HD at no extra cost making Sky Sports in its current form and price a hard sell.

Eventually there'll come a breaking point where people say "enough is enough" Sky, bt etc bidding stupid money for sports will be their own downfall in the long run i think.

The bottom line here is this imo, we are getting rogered by $ky! Them and BT are paying silly money for football rights, which go to lining the pockets of overpaid and mostly very ordinary spoiled brat football players, It's now becoming out of the reach for the ordinary guy to subscribe to these companies for sports viewing, disgusting actually!

I was comparing the like for like costs of Sky Sports on both providers.

With VM you do actually need to have a TV subscription in order to add Sky Sports. The minimum standalone TV pack currently advertised as available being the M+ pack at £19 per month.

Therefore you are correct in the fact that you can get Sky Sports cheaper with VM in an overall package but not with a like for like package.

I agree and really Sky could use VM as an ally. Making Sky Sports (and Sky Movies) cheaper on VM may make VM's packages more attractive but ultimately Sky make a lot of money from VM with the carriage deals for the Sky basics and premiums.

I personally think we are very near that point as I know many of my friends and family (both Sky and VM subscribers) who've reviewed their packages and cancelled the Sky premiums due to the current costs. So this will happen more and more as the price increases.

Actually you can get Sky sports HD on the Freeview package 'M' I know because I've done it!
It costs about £5 more which kind of offsets the lack of a package, instead of £34.25 it's £39.25.

As you can see this is £20 cheaper than you can access it on Sky but without the other pay channels.

It makes me laugh mate especially as Bein Sport only costs about £11.60p/m an you're getting 15 hd sports channels, ok only 2 are in English lol but those two show the football aswell as tennis etc. IMO it's far better value for money.

My Total Channels has gone down by one.

I think Virgin Media has removed Best Direct from Total Channels.

I have found that Virgin Media remove channels from Total Channels 90 days after they stop broadcasting. Best Direct was set to be removed on Good Friday.

This is done to allow people time to view any recordings that they have made from defunct channels. Seems a bit daft to apply the rule to shopping channels imo...

Except Sky has pretty much reached what it can charge now and extra sports rights costs are now hitting its profits. It can't simply put up prices and expect the same number of subscribers to fork out more each month. If it could charge more each month it would have done so already, Sky's not a charity!

It's far better value for money but £11.60pm does not cover its costs. It's heavily subsidised by the Qatar government from its oil revenues.

Premier League prices are a joke, I agree. Also poor is the lack of capacity meaning length season waiting lists at clubs, they're letting their fans and cities down by not adding capacity.
Regarding TV subscription prices, I think you need to compare the UK to equivalent European countries like France, Germany and Italy. I'm sure, for example, viewers in these countries would find BT Sport with broadband very good value. It would be interesting to see a comprehensive comparison.

Is Bein Sport legally obtainable in the UK for commercial premises, as I would love to dump Sky?

If not, what about domestic premises? Is this legal or does one have to jump through a few hoops?

It's certainly illegal for commercial premises, I'm not sure about domestic premises. I guess this might depend on whether it's from outside the EU. If you subscribed to French beIN it would certainly be against its terms & conditions in the same way that viewing Sky in France is against Sky's terms and conditions...but not illegal.

It's not illegal but is against terms and conditions, however using it for comercial purposes could land you in very hot water but for domestic use it's just against t+cs but i don't think Bein will mind aslong as they get the money each month.
You just need a smart dns service , a decent broadband speed and a device such as a raspberry pi, laptop etc and you're away. Payment is made via paypal.

Sorry if the question is stupid, but regarding the half price offer for Sky Sports and Movies, does it make a difference how I order? The letter says "To order the Sky Sports and Movies collection half price call...". If I try to order through the Tivo box, it doesn't show the half price offer.

You need to call the sales team and do it with them. For anyone else interested, details are now on the customer news section of the website (http://my.virginmedia.com/customer-n...ons-offer.html).

Just rung and added them myself to watch the big games this weekend and the Premier League title run in. :)

Cheers for that. Had Sports anyway and they've just added movies and it comes in around £10 a month cheaper. Takes me through to the end of July when my loyalty discount ends. Then it's time for the bartering to begin...

Thanks. I didn't really want the movies as well, but £17.13 is very good value for three months so I think I'll indulge.

Why not ask them? A bit more reliable that asking random people on the internet. May also be wise to take professional legal advice.

Interesting article , mainly about Sky but VM TIVO gets a brief mention.

Netflix is meanwhile busy signing deals with cable operators, including Virgin Media, who would rather offer it as part of a subscription than lose customers to it. Virgin Media is also testing a cloud-based recording system along the lines of Project Ethan with its set-top box provider TiVo.

Is BSkyB no longer the chosen one?
David Moyes has left Manchester United, and Sky's dominance of Premier League TV is starting to crumble as well

Juliette Garside
Follow @JulietteGarsideFollow @guardian
The Observer, Sunday 27 April 2014
David Moyes and BSkyB are both dealing with disappointing performances.
The ousting of David Moyes at Manchester United stole the headlines last week, but it is not the only upset at the top of the footballing world.

BSkyB, it seems, is beginning to stagger from the impact of rival BT's investment in the beautiful game – the telecoms group holds a slug of Premier League rights and will have exclusive access to the Champions League.

Sky boss Jeremy Darroch reports third-quarter results on Thursday, and the forecast is troubling. Seasoned Skywatcher Sarah Simon, who analyses the company's numbers for Berenberg bank, says it is not only losing operating profits but market share.

In the converging worlds of telecoms and television, the key metric is new broadband customers. In the third quarter last year, Sky signed a net 152,000. This time the number will be closer to 80,000, says Simon. Sky's market share of new additions has slumped from a peak of 90% in 2012, and is now thought to be around 39%. BT, meanwhile, is on the rise, with a forecast 73% market share, up from 48% in the same quarter last year.

During his brief stint at Man U, Moyes consulted a management self-help guide called Good to Great. It advises leaders to concentrate on one thing at a time – to be a hedgehog, not a fox. But Sky prides itself on its multi-product offering, so Darroch might bristle at that suggestion.

I think there's a couple of interesting points here:
- Sky also likes to announce new deals and services in the run-up to, and on the day of, its results. So a deal with VM for the remaining sports channels in HD could be announced next week. :)
- Good news in the results for subscribers but not shareholders. Sky's likely fall in profits confirms that the company has had to absorb some of the costs of increased sports rights, putting to bed the urban myth that it can simply put up prices of Sky Sports and the same number of people will pay more.

It's only natural that Sky, as VM's major premium TV platform competitor is mentioned. It happens on two levels though. Some of us compare the two and realise that it is normal for both to seek a competitive advantage over the other. Others though, ignore everything VM withholds from Sky and whine constantly about what Sky withholds from VM.

That's how we roll here. :)

Two main reasons 1) Virgin's key supplier of content 2) Market leader in UK pay tv and VM's key competitor.

Not really a myth though, is it? Prices have been rising for years and people still pay for it. They will still increase prices, and people will still pay more, it's just that Sky can not pass the full cost onto customers.

I've probably phrased it badly, Sky does put up prices each year but is now having to absorb the huge increase in sports rights costs which are eating into its profits. (The myth was not that Sky increased its prices which it obviously does but that everyone will willingly pay more to cover its increased costs - Sky knows they won't and is taking a hit on its profits. I think there's a belief around that Sky bids "sky-high" for sports rights then just passes the increased costs onto its customers. Its results show it does not. Sorry for going off-topic, it's a hobby horse of mine!)

I've heard a rumour Cinemanow are looking to launch in uk in partnership with Virgin media.
I'm not so sure on this one as they are a ppv service.

Very much doubt this one - Cinemaknow is owned by Best Buy who operate it in the same way that Currys does with its KnowHow Movies. Best Buy retreated from the UK after a high-profile attempt at cracking the market in 2012 and I can't see them rushing back. However, TalkTalk has recently partnered with long-time Virgin supplier FilmFlex so you never know!

BBC News Channel to follow BBC Three online?

Independent.co.uk is reporting that fears are growing that the BBC News Channel could become online only.

I would rather that went online only rather than BBC3. We have lots of news channels but not really anything else like BBC3.

Its blatant to me that BBC are trying to get the trust to agree to up the license fee with all these threats

I fear the closure of BBC3 is more a promise than a threat.
