BT Sport set to strike Virgin Media carriage deal

29 JULY, 2013 | BY PETER WHITE

Virgin Media is poised to close a deal to carry BT Sport’s three sports channels on its cable TV platform, making them available to a further 4m potential customers.

The two companies have been in negotiations for a number of months but both have been keen to strike a deal ahead of BT Sport’s launch on Thursday 1 August.

BT Sport has the rights to the Scottish Premier League, which begins its season on Friday 2 August, and wanted to have carriage on Virgin in time for its first TV game - Partick Thistle versus Dundee United - so as not to alienate football fans who are VM customers. The English Premier League season starts on August 17th.

One of the sticking points of negotiations has been whether Virgin will bundle the new channels in with its TV XL premium package - as was previously the case with ESPN - or whether it will charge for them as a standalone product.

It is not clear which route has been taken, but a Virgin Media spokesman said: We’re always looking bring the best possible value and choice of great quality content to our customers and we’re talking to BT about how we could potentially make the forthcoming BT Sport package available.”

Earlier this year, Virgin Media sent an online survey out to customers asking whether they would be willing to pay slightly more for their top package if it were to include Premier League football and Sky Atlantic, which could pave the way for this move.

BT Sport is being sold as a standalone channel on the Sky platform for £12 a month in SD and £15 a month in HD

I can't understand why Virgin would start a thread in the community forum and post on it information that has been readily available elsewhere on their website for weeks, unless it's in advance of an announcement and will be edited accordingly.

I think there'll be news soon.

Be a completely different change of direction from virgin media if they do that. VM have always put all available channels in XL and never separated the VIP package as a different package (except for putting premium channels in there) i think if it isnt going to be in XL it won't be in VIP.

But i could be completely wrong and VM will throw a curveball. I wouldnt mind going back to VIP tbh and getting the movie channels as well so if they do this i'll be intrigued and mostly satisfied!

I have a feeling, based on the fact Broadcast Now are an extremely popular broadcast magazine they will know a bit. The chances are, as Bomber said, Sky and BT have done a deal with VM but it means they can heavily promote to virgin customers for them to switch. They cannot say anything, so therefore we have heard nothing official on BT and they are denying Atlantic.

Well here we are with no official announcement yet but boy oh boy its been another interesting day with rumours and counter rumours arriving backward's and forward's all morning but in my humble opinion now with the Broadcast website news its just basically what package it will be on or will it be a standalone package and what price it will be.

That woke me up! so staff get told at 10am, leaked on CF around 11am, hours of debate, official VM press release 6pm, moaning about not getting SA for next few months.

Spotify premium? permanently on XL or just a 3 month offer

Actually have to agree on the fact that it is really tiresome reading page after page after page about what everyone on here thinks about what will or won't happen regarding Sky Atlantic and BT Sports. But absolutely no hard facts.

A couple of years ago when HD channels started coming to Virgin the Coming soon thread was really interesting and I had a look nearly every day. Now the thread is really just bla, bla. And before some smart person comes up with the suggestion, I do tend to stay away most of the time.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

If Virgin Media come up with BT Sports 1 & 2 + HD and we also get Sky Atlantic, that will certainly meet my channels wishlist completely. If they get to the XL pack, excellent.

Not so bothered about Drama, because this is just another repeats channel. We had enough repeats during the summertime when we only had five channels!

If Virgin Media pull this off, this will be simply amazing, and if there are other features coming out as well during August such as Netflix and subscription free Spotify, I will be doubly impressed.

I'm not really expecting the Netflix/Spotify rumours to come true, but let's hope that this time the channels we are all waiting for actually materialise!

via Virgin I want to watch every match, and I want to watch it in HD. not arsed in the slightest about Sky Atlantic, Entertainment HD, Channel American Bollox #26 x infinity. Don't care about any of them and NONE of them would be an adequate substitute to a Sports fan. I cannot watch the merseyside derby on sky atlantic or UK Drama. I won't make do with an episode of The Sopranos while a big Premier League game is on and i'm missing it. only BT Sport, in HD, will do.

that would be a massive waste of time with 99% of people wanting BT Sport of the Premier Legaue, and the other 1% want it for the (completely rubbish) UFC.

ESPN doesn't have the Premier League rights anymore. So this would be no adequate substitute for BT Sport. Neither would a few episodes of Mad Men on sky atlantic, or a couple of terrible films on Netflix. Fairly bizarre how so many people seem to think it would be

ESPN doesn't have the Premier League rights anymore. So this would be no adequate substitute for BT Sport. Neither would a few episodes of Mad Men on sky atlantic, or a couple of terrible films on Netflix. Fairly bizarre how so many people seem to think it would be

why its not about the prem league I couldn't give a monkeys about the prem its about the baseball the american football ice hockey basketball. its about having more sports channel other than eurosport.
BT sport is just 2 channels that we prob wont get. we lost 4 channels altogether

Depends on the storyline. What storyline should the film be?

What would people think to both Atlantic and BT joining the XL package but that price going up by £3 a month? £2 going to BT per xl sub and £1 to the cost of Sky Atlantic.

I would not be happy at all and would not be prepared to pay it. Both Atlantic and BT Sport are channels that I don't want do therefore shouldn't have to fork out the extra in order for them to appear on the EPG

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

This was taken from the article posted a few pages back

Quote:

Earlier this year, Virgin Media sent an online survey out to customers asking whether they would be willing to pay slightly more for their top package if it were to include Premier League football and Sky Atlantic, which could pave the way for this move.
The info listed from that survey seems to suggest a new tier which could include BT Sport and Sky Atlantic maybe XXL. Anyone else read it like that , I could be wrong but that's how it reads in my opinion.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

It was suggested a while back that VM were paying ESPN £2 per XL sub to be in the XL pack. I think BT would be mad not to take £4 per XL customer, £2 from the ESPN money and £2 from an increase. I also think that VM could get away with upping the Xl package by £3 without too many complaints.

People like me are in the minority i don't want BT or Atlantic but fear i will end up paying for them

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

It certainly seems plausible, and if they give it a reasonable price could be worth it. At least it would be our choice.

The price of the XL package went up already just 5 months ago. The money Virgin are saving from the loss of ESPN from the XL package, and the price hike in February, would make yet another price increase now very hard for some to swallow.

Virgin should have plenty of money to add even more quality channels to XL, without milking the customers yet again.

Completely agree and not just last 5 months, skysports subscribers have been hit as well separately (I think twice in one year but happy to be challenged on it), I still resent having to pay £7 for in essence 2 out of potential 6 HD channels (sport wise) but that's another story. But we had quite a few price increases with phone line etc if you add up the odd £1, £1.50 they increased over the last few years its a significant sum.

We're are saying goodbye to the ESPN and ESPN HD channels on August 1st 2013. After this they'll no longer be part of your TV packages.

But the Listings are still showing after August 1st on V+ HD boxes.

morrow 30-07-2013 00:47

Been a long term lurker on here and decided to add my two cents about bt sports. I think if we get it, it will be part of the xl package or vip or even if you have xl with ss as surely its too late for vm to add it as a stand alone charged channel unless we're gonna get it late.

Virgin would have to advertise it and there would be too many people in the know by this point.

If it does arrive as part of xl etc, only the negotiations team and the top brass would need to know until its announced so as to avoid leaks.

It wouldn't make any sense for vm to agree to a seperate charge for the channel this late when they have already potentially lost those desperate and willing to pay for it to their rivals as everyone else waiting, including me, are hoping its included in xl or only willing to accept a smallish increase in the package cost.

I clearly dont have any insider info and im probably just hoping for the best!

Anyway cheers to all the contributers on here that have kept me in the know over the past few years :)

I enjoyed ESPN but have been watching mine and the families viewing habits most of it is on freeview channels, i could justify keeping the xl package if bt sports is in it, if not i,m changing to broadband only, never use the phone and to be honest resent having to pay line rental. With broadband freeview and netflix bill goes down to £31 as opposed to over £60.

I think it Discovery Living and Travel that close three months ago on April 30th.

ESPN Classic is closing on August 1st but will not be remove by Virgin Media until November 1st.

I said that for sports fans, ie people who want to watch the Premier League, nothing other than BT Sports will suffice. No amount of "entertainment" channels will compensate for the big match starting and not being able to watch it.

I think for non sports fans it is stupid of them to think sky atlantic would be an adequate substitute for BT Sports. clearly they know nothing about what it is like to support a team, and should keep out of it.

You replied to me and said that you would find Sky Atlantic a suitable replacement for ESPN, as you never once watched the channel.

It's the posts saying "If we don't get BT Sports hopefully Virgin will add Sky Atlantic and UK Drama to compensate. That would be fair! I think everybody would be fine with that" etc that are doing my head in. Because anybody who is a football fan or an avid fan of a sport knows that is simply not true. These people cannot be sports fans with that attitude. So they shouldn't be commenting on the BT Sport situation with such stupidity and silly posts.

But my point is: You are admittedly not a sports fan so you don't require a replacement do you, if you never watched the channel. So I don't know why you replied quoting my post.
