Great to see two great channels coming to Virgin. Anyway, how will Freesat be running over the hills with our recent channel launches?

Since BT have been running these newspaper ads this week saying that BT Sport won't be on VM. I would take that as a very clear answer as to whether they'll be on VM or not.

Not.

Unless you have actually had both services, you can't form a truly informed comparison between the two of them. No offence meant to anyone but it's a fact.

Virgins broadband, when not being shaped, is incredibly fast. SKY's broadband can't compete with the speeds on offer from Virgin. I'm lucky to get a consistent 15.5 Mb connection from SKY, no everyone with SKY broadband is so lucky, which makes the £3.75 I pay each month for broadband fantastic value. For me personally it suits my needs but I know 15.5 Mb isn't enough for some households.

I never really had any major issues with Virgins broadband, and so far the same applies to SKY. I must admit however that the Wifi connection I get from my SKY hub seems stronger than the Wifi connection I got from the Virgin super hub.

I think both companies offer great broadband services, but at opposite ends of the broadband scale. If you live in a bandwidth hungry household go with Virgin.

I am including BT infinity, though experience of this is still happening

I balance price, with gaming experience with reliability of downloads

Not overly concerned about speed, as long as it is enough for my uses.

And my last preference is for unlimited, though I am not a heavy user

Unless you have actually had both services in thousands of homes, you can't form a truly informed comparison between the two of them. No-one should assume their experiences (good or bad) are representative.

Personally I've had neither service so am naturally unbiased. :)

Yes Colin is definitely the expert on a good many things but alas l suppose we all are armchair experts and critics when it comes down to it but alas we are wrong a good many times and we are right a good many times but at least we have fun voicing our opinions and don't adopt the Victor Meldrew type image.:D

They are representative for me..which is all I would be interested in.

Why should I worry about what is happening in other homes (so 1,000s or 1,000,000s means nothing), as that doesn't make my experience better or worse.

I do not work for any of the companies, nor favour any, just looking for best product for me.

Media Boy, do you know if the pre-season friendlies will be televised.

I am picking on one game Celtic are playing at Griffin Park in July, does anyone know the answer.

Brentford are charging £25.00 for fans to see this game, which is a bit rich as some pre season games are less than that.

Not.

This might be BT playing hardball with VM to presurise them into agreeing to their terms of carriage. Companies often do this by the use of publicity/adverts.

Unless we have another Sky Atlantic situation, where BT want to use their sports rights to encourage people to their platform- unless a LOT of money changes hands.

It could equally be that Virgin aren't that bothered, and Bt aren't either.

I suspect though it is the latter more so, BT not bothered whether Virgin get their product, so they can distinguish themselves from Virgin

I also think, that the recent offer by Sky re cheap broadband, is because BT have gotten a reasonable number of sky customers for the broadband (not the tv).

BT are playing games. I had a phone call from them trying to insinuate that it might not get on Virgin Media and many people were switching to BT from Virgin. I challenged him on the content difference and he didn't like me calling BT effectively Freeview+. I stated that if BT Sport was not on Virgin then BT would miss out on potentially millions of customers, including myself. I also suggested that BT should fight with Sky instead. I would take from this that BT Sport will definitely appear on Virgin, its just desperate tactics to try and con people in to switching before the deal. They couldn't cope with throwing away that amount of advertising.

Changing the subject slightly, have received a second email in three weeks informing me that VM think they could offer me a better deal by upgrading to VIP. Having seen at least one other similar post about this elsewhere, I was just wondering if anyone thought VM are trying to get as many people signed up/retained to VIP before they offer some possible discount to entice customers to upgrade their packages as their way to keep customers or neuter the BT Sport threat (or possible lack of BT sports)?

I've had three of these through the post and several emails about upgrading to the VIP pack. I was considering it until I thought, why bother as I've been on the the VIP pack since it was introduced

Me too, although I fail to see how it's a better deal. It would just mean paying more for sport and movie channels I don't watch and getting a better allowance of freecalls on the landline I barely use...

It's perhaps unfortunate that Virgin kept the name "vip" because it leads to confusion, but I'm sure the current vip pack is different to what was first introduced, and you aren't automatically moved on to the new version of the pack.

Would be worth a call - the new collections have worked out cheaper for some.

I too am on vip100 with sky sports and movies, I agree the constant phone calls, emails and mail shots are just an attempt to get me on a new contract as someone with sky sports and mutv I'm a high risk of buggering off when they don't get BT... This is exactly the reason I havnt renewed my contract.

They are crap at targeting offers. I had someone from VM phone me yesterday trying to upgrade my phone package to Talk Unlimited, all they had to do was look at my usage to see that I don't use my landline much. After I said no to this he moved onto mobile, asked me what I pay now and what I get for it so I told him. He then proceeded to offer me a worse deal from Virgin Mobile, why not just say we can't better than rather than waste my time.

I keep getting these VIP pack emails to, I don't know what they have been looking at to think it is a better deal but it certainly isn't my usage.

My thoughts are pretty similar I would watch the movie channels though. IF they come up with a decent little deal, I will consider it a bit more seriously! Perhaps they will follow suit and offer free broadband on VIP too?

After I said no to this he moved onto mobile, asked me what I pay now and what I get for it so I told him. I keep getting these VIP pack emails to, I don't know what they have been looking at to think it is a better deal but it certainly isn't my usage.

Yup, Orange often update me via text to say I am on the best package for my usage. It makes me chuckle how they think an extra £40 a month is a better deal for me:D
Still, they are a business and they do need to pay their bills somehow:)

Would be worth a call - the new collections have worked out cheaper for some.

I've had a quick look and the only thing I am missing is Tivo.
I might ring them anyway.

I've just been looking through the Travel Channel EPG listings.

There's an afternoon programme called 'Hotel Impossible' that looks similar to The Hotel Inspector. As someone who has stayed in many hotels over the years, I like to watch these types of programmes.

The only problem is that it isn't series linked

Richard, I might have grasped your situation wrong, but I have just checked "Hotel Impossible" and it has given me the option of an express series link. Hope this helps improve your situation:) BTW I am using TIVO if that makes a difference!

The Channels you have listed have still to get confirmed by Viacom or Virgin Media as set to launch.

The next channels is set to launch is both BBC RD 2 and BBC RD 3 on Monday.

Same on my box.

But after Virgin Media's weekly box reboot as of 9am today 'Series Links' has now appeared on Food Network.

Had to do a manual reboot myself this morning, came down and it was stuck in a reboot cycle. Not checked to see if series links work or not though.

Richard, I might have grasped your situation wrong, but I have just checked "Hotel Impossible" and it has given me the option of an express series link. Hope this helps improve your situation:) BTW I am using TIVO if that makes a difference!

Thanks for looking into that for me, as Spiderplant says, I have a V+.

VM has a weekly reboot?

I never knew that! When does this happen and why?

The reboot happen area by area at about 4am to 6am almost every Monday night (as far as I know).

I sometimes miss the end of WWE Raw due to the reboot.

I have been told that Virgin Media need to do that reboot when they work on the EPG so the thing they are working on will work for all viewers in the morning.

It sounds like the EPG is like a computer that needs to rebooted before changes take effect.

You learn something new every day:D

The TV box's run a flavour of linux and all the features of the box are just software programs running on it. So you can think of the EPG as part of the software that starts at boot time, in a similar way programs start at boot on a windows machine. Just does its own update when first run at boot, similar to antivirus and windows update on windows.

Over simplified and probably teaching your grandma to suck eggs anyway :D

Just had a look at the Travel Channel, looks total garbage, and ancient! Keith Floyd was on and he's been fried bread for ages!

Not weekly, but when necessary. V+ boxes get rebooted whenever channels are added or removed.

That's a matter of opinion. I can see it becoming my most-watched channel.

No you dont! I've now set a series link for this programme- thanks for your help, it is appreciated.

I was up working late last night and found that the two channels had been added without a reboot, BUT when I came down this morning, a programme that I was recording had been interrupted because of a reboot just before 6am.

Is the V+ able to have channels added, but needs a reboot afterwards for them to work  (the two channels were added before the official start time of 6am and were both showing teleshopping).

The reboot is required to fix a rare fault. More than likely your box wasn't affected, but they all get rebooted just in case.

Must be very rare, it's always fun having it reboot a few hours into watching a new channel. Then being stuck there for ages while the box reloads the EPG and refuses to respond to the remote.

When I had a V+ Box (I have had a TiVo over 2 years now) it used to reboot around 3am every Monday morning...
