Answer to matt_home1

Customers who subscribe to Virgin Media’s XL TV pack will be able to watch ESPN and ESPN HD at no additional cost. As part of the deal, these subscribers will also receive ESPN Classic, featuring the greatest moments of UK and European sport.

Arthur will announce Virgin will put up prices to pay for it

and i did re read and found the ESPN classic line,

the press release said
Quote:

The plan to make the channels available to Virgin Media’s XL customers will help ESPN better serve sports fans in the UK. It’s an exciting season ahead and we look forward to bringing our new channels, ESPN and ESPN HD as well as ESPN Classic, to as many sports fans as possible.”
http://pressoffice.virginmedia.com/p...434&highlight=

The reference to ESPN Classic could be a general comment by ESPN about their intentions of putting Classics on more platforms but to me it does seem to indicate it will be coming to VM.

531. For ESPN US to be relaunch maybe that an later date.
532. ESPN - Was Channel 533.
533. ESPN HD
553. ESPN Classic

OR.
551. ESPN

553. ESPN Classic.

Unless there is an agreement between Virgin and Sky for Sky Sports to be at the top of the sports section then I would move it up to

501 ESPN
502 Kept free for poss future ESPN2
503 ESPN HD
504 Kept free for poss future ESPN2HD
505 ESPN Classics

I would do this as they are going to be Virgins major focus for sport and so should take the dominant channel numbers.

and possibly move Eurosport up

506 Eurosport 1
507 Eurosport 2
508 Kept free for future expansion
509 Kept free for future expansion

511 Sky Sports 1
etc

Move the club channels so they are grouped together

Its not so much that it is an extra 3 days to wait (lets face it an extra 3 days after all this time is, in real terms, nothing), it more the fact that Virgin have made official statments quoting by the end of July. This would just demonstrate that Virgin arent that interested in keeping promises made in statments. It would feed all of those people who knock VM (you know who you are! ;-) )

VM made a promise that it would be by the end of July, they should keep to it.

I am aware that this is just a rumour from a "virgin insider" and there have been loads of them.

Having said all of that I do think that VM have lined up a cracking deal re HD stuff.

joglynne 29-07-2009 13:37

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

VM could certainly make far more impact in the press/and as a service announcement if they launched these new channels and HD content all on the same day.

Although we at CF are aware of what is on the cards I suspect the average customer is totally in the dark about what is about to be launched and I would assume VM will want to use this as a marketing opportunity.

Maby - but to me they would make more impact if they just kept their promises.

Also making multiple announcments over a period of a few days would not (in my opinion) harm them.

Impressed with VM at getting such a good deal.

Just rang VM to confirm that the current £10 I pay for ESPN America will not be on future bills due to the channel re-branding and being free and the lady I spoke to said ESPN America will still be broadcasting along with ESPN and ESPN Classics.

No wonder people get confused when the information coming from the ground level staff seems to contradict what has been said...

Will just rung them back next week when ESPN America has vanished and get them to sort them oney then :-)

I always check out this thread at lunchtimes, and what a superb surprise I got today, the entire ESPN package and in HD and for free...it doesn't get much better than that.
As regards holding back this Fridays release date for the other HD channels, remember folks its only a rumor, personally I'd be surprised if they did after posting the release date in the "customer zone".

It's just a blurry mess and it simply isn't good enough.

As a matter of interest, what is your TV specification?

Screen size (i.e. diagonal in metric and imperial)
Type (e.g. LCD, Plasma)
Resolution (e.g. 1080i, 1080p)
Scan rate (e.g. 100Hz)

I suppose I should also ask how close do you sit to it?

I'm still of the opinion that larger screens and certain technologies need HD to be viewable comfortably.

Well, who knows, VM may get round to a reshuffle of the EPG at some point. As you say, there are spaces at the top of the sports section for such a scenario as you describe. Not sure about Eurosport being so high up though! What do they show, table tennis, volleyball.:) The spaces are better left for some "proper" sports channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Have now spoken with both VM and ESPN and both have confirmed that ESPN America WILL be carrying on as a separate channel in the UK on VM in addition to and not replaced by ESPN (the new channel).

The confusion appears to be because ESPN are not certain that ESPN America will be live on VM immediately when ESPN is launched next monday due to launch issues (as they put it). They are certain that longterm that ESPN America will be on VM although if it has to go off the air it may be up to 4 months before it returns (although they hope to avoid this).

VM have confirmed that from monday (or if the channel disappears for a few days, weeks or months) that ESPN America will in future be free as part of the XL Tv package so all VM subscribers who currently pay £10 for ESPN America will have a £10 saving in their bill from monday whilst ultimately still getting ESPN America as well as the new ESPN, ESPN HD and ESPN Classics.

Good job all around it has to be said.

Just hoping that any issues ESPN have can be resolved without having to cease broadcasting for any period at all..but I suppose that will be clearer on the day so to speak.

I think ESPN need to buy an EPG Channel on Sky to relaunch ESPN America.

Note to ESPN bosses I hear that Setanta are selling some EPG Channels on Sky.

Yes, it is really becoming tiresome. A lot of it is wishful / resentful interpretations of announcements / speculations.

We may be getting some HD channels: we'll have them yesterday; we'll never get them.

I find it bizarre that VM say that ESPN America will continue, even if it does go off air for a few months, when ESPN have already decided to shut the channel. Even more bizarre that ESPN say the channel will continue when they've already announced its closure...

ESPN America was the vehicle for ESPN to launch in the UK by buying what was NASN. There's not exactly that much demand for American football, baseball, basketball, hockey et all here, is there? Some American sports will still be shown on the new ESPN channel, but from next Monday ESPN America is gone for good.

Well if you are right Horizon you need to tell the people working at ESPN that as they don't agree with you and having got the same information from both VM and ESPN I am inclined to think they would be better informed on this.

They are adamant ESPN America is not gone for good and at this point I see no reason to disbelieve the people who work for both the channel owners and the channel that want to keep the service.

There is actually probably a lot more demand for US sports than you think for the record. If there was that little interest in US sports then I am sure ESPN America/NASN (as was) would have ceased broadcasting a long time ago due to a lack of subscription fees but as they clearly got enough of a subscription base to justify the channel broadcasting I would say you are wrong on the lack of interest.

Yeah I was just asking about any other channels than the HD ones. Just I know a fair few people who are on the standard box and have no interest in sport or HD and just want some additional channels more suited to them.

Thanks for the info though

VMTest4 - HD test using MTVNHD
VMTest5 - HD test using History HD

MB, welcome back from the smokeless wedding.

Where did you find this testing info. on Wiki.? I couldn't find it with Google.

IMHO, to avoid repeated "I can't see these, how do you?" posts, we should prefix or append a brief statement to any "now testing at a screen near you" posts which points out that you have to have the right equipment, be in the right area and have access to the engineering menus (or whatever the criteria are) in order to see them. A link to a more comprehensive explanation would suffice.

I've got a standard Pace Di4000-N V Box on the Bromley platform in an ex-C&W/ex-NTL area so I'm lucky to get a picture at all let alone see any special test transmissions. I just wait patiently and enjoy what I already have. :)

<OT> Short of things to watch? If your TV has the facility to program a channel as Colour System: SECAM, Sound System: DK, Frequency: 463MHz (channel S41) then the next time a Soyuz launches, plug an aerial in and point it at the sky. You may get something from the 10Watt TV transmitter on board. I've had my TV set up for months but haven't tried it out in earnest yet. Actually, even with PAL-I you should get a monochrome picture with no sound.</OT>

No, but it offends my sense of correctness :)

BA is still British Airways PLC and BMI is still British Midland Airways Limited (albeit trading as bmi).

Virgin do seem to have come out all guns blazing. And the speed at which they managed to sign the ESPN deal, to not only include HD but free on the XL package is truly astounding.

...yes, if you mean, will the channels be in 5.1 sound, they will. But if you do mean radio stations, then no.

No doubt VM are talking to other broadcasters, but remember that at the moment the network still has limited capacity. So consider these HD channel launches a soft launch, if you will. Now once all analogue is turned off to all areas, then there will be oodles of capacity for lots of nice things.

My God I do hope so! I'm really eager to see if they broadcast sports like baseball and NASCAR (even if it's not the sprint cup series) over here.
Or is it going to be the usual cr*p like soccer, cricket and golf! ;) Hope not..

According to the statement on the ESPN America website, yes. The ESPN UK website makes no mention of US sports in HD though, only soccer.

Quote:

ESPN America statement
We recently announced the launch of a new ESPN channel in the UK to begin airing on 3rd August. Along with Barclays Premier League matches and the best of international sport, the channel will offer Live American sports which are currently available on ESPN America including Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and NCAA sports - both in standard and high definition.
