Thanks ... Downloading Batman now, but the one I really want is beyond my reach due to the lack of a gyroscope. Add Asphalt 8 to the lengthening list of games I can't play on my venerable ipad1.

the new iphones a long with the iphone 5 and 4S are a load of crap. they just keep releasing the same old thing and people are paying over £700 for this!?

the new ones are even worse and the 5C, what a joke.

There are much better options around, Nokia Lumia 925 & HTC One both for style, power and beauty ... and the Lumia 1020 with a 41 MP cam if you're into that!

All of which are the same as last year's models with maybe a faster CPU, higher res CCD (for the camera) and more memory. Essentially offering even less "innovation" than Apple are.

As for more stylish and beautiful.. I can't believe you managed to use those words in the same sentence as Lumia. Hideously ugly phones, IMO.

As for the 41 megapixel camera. Yes, that sounds impressive. However, 41 megapixels actually doesn't make that much difference to the quality of the image from a mobile phone camera because the sensor itself is too small.

What's different between the 4 and 4S.

What is a major change between the 4 and 5, what's any sort of major difference between the 5 and 5S?

As for the 5C, charging people a premium price for a really low budget looking phone

iPhone 4: Apple A4 SoC (ARM Cortex-A8 single-core CPU, PowerVR SGX535 single-core GPU), 512MB RAM, 5MP camera, 3.5" screen.

iPhone 4S: Apple A5 SoC (ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core CPU, PowerVR SGX543MP2 dual-core GPU), 512MB RAM, 8MP camera, 3.5" screen.

iPhone 5: Apple A6 SoC (custom-designed "Swift" dual-core CPU, based upon the newer ARMv7 architecture, PowerVR SGX543MP3 triple-core GPU), 1GB RAM, 8MP camera (but with faster capture and better low-light performance), 4" screen (16:9 AR).

iPhone 5S: Apple A7 SoC (custom-designed multi-core 64bit CPU, based upon the even newer ARMv8 architecture, GPU not yet known but speculation is that it's a PowerVR SGX543MP4 quad-core GPU or a PowerVR Series 6), 1GB RAM (unconfirmed), 8MP camera (but f/2.2 instead of f/2.4), 4" screen (16:9 AR), TouchID fingerprint sensor.

Yeah, "same old same old" with no major changes at all between versions

Also, don't forget, as I said before: The "off year" is always just an "S" version with a spec bump and the odd new feature. The alternating year when the model number goes up is when it gets much more of a re-design.

It's just a colour version of the 5, with cheaper build costs for Apple. It's aiming at a different market than before, with the 5S now being the top-end phone.

Zee 16-09-2013 19:15

Re: The iPhone thread

so the processor improves slightly with slight ram improvements after 4 years and that justifies the hefty price tags? no wonder they are losing market share.

Why not just keep releasing the 3210 and just making it longer with more processing power then?

Tezcatlipoca 16-09-2013 20:14

Re: The iPhone thread

The processor improvements are more than just "slight". Try looking at some of the benchmarks.

As for market share... Apple doesn't chase market share. If it did it would release a cheaper phone, but it's not fussed about that.

Still, anyway... Although Apple's global share has dipped (which happens in the quarter before a refresh), it is actually still the number 1 smartphone manufacturer in the US, above Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG. That share has also increased compared to last year, as has its OS share in the US.

And it's still selling more iPhones year-on-year... 31.2 million in Q3 2013 versus 26 million in Q3 2012.

No, but the fact it's in a mobile phone (a relatively small case packed with a lot of other circuitry) would suggest to me it's not large.

It tends to be released on a region-by-region basis, IIRC the last few arrived on my phone at around 6 in the evening.

iOS 7 is well worth the upgrade if your device can handle it. It's not just a lot better looking than past versions, it's simply much better all round with a far superior Notification Centre, a new Control Centre, and various other improvements.

It's so much better than the massive let down that was iOS 6 ("ooh, Apple Maps, plus now the iPad has Siri  ")

Or back up to iCloud.

If you do use iTunes, you *must* update to the new version first. Although the previous version can update a device to iOS7, it may not restore a back up to an iOS 7 device.

The public release is almost always the same build as the GM. I think there was only one time it was slightly different, because of an issue that got discovered in between the two releases.

If you restore an iTunes backup, once the settings etc. have been restored iTunes will sync your apps back on.

If you restore an iCloud backup, once the settings etc. have been restored your apps will re-download.

You can also go into the App Store app, then Updates, then Purchased, to see all the apps and re-download directly. But the restore should put them back...

Anything that has previously been downloaded can be downloaded again for free. Apps, Books, Movies, Music.

Or if you have anything that is jailbroken, and your own music library then be prepared to lose it all and start from scratch. Evil iTunes is just too scary to use when you have multiple Apple products.

Took a plunge yesterday and bought a 4s for the hell of it. Right off the bat I found the OS incredibly restrictive so naturally it's jailbroken already. I own an S3, s4 and s5 now all with different Roms etc and I'm finding the iphone incredibly slow and sometimes just none responsive. I've cleared open apps using the home button and still nada, am I missing something here? Battery seems to charge fast but also discharges at an alarming rate. Sound is on and off and sometimes only plays audio when on charge, the docking issue maybe? Seen it via google.

Need some tips before I regret this and end up flogging it for pennies on Facebook.

Isn't second hand is it?

I had my 4s around 4 years plus an it never had an issue never hung or anything never slow.. Remember 4s is old now.. Comparing it to the newer galaxy's is a bit silly.. Remember there's a 5, 5c and 5s.

I've now got the iPhone 5s an I'm glad I upgraded, never thought I'd notice it, but the speed is faster some how.. Battery lasts over a day an I'm on it most of the day..

Aye it was from cex. Was just to faf around with. Guessing the phone is a dud now given the audio issue appears to be the docking problem. The phone lag I have no idea about unless there's a second way to clear apps I'm missing. Was comparing it to my S3 tbf but that discharges just as quick with a 4k anker battery. Charged to 100% at 18:30ish and now at 42% after posting here and idling in that time.

Edit: it skipped 41% and just rolled down to 40.

You should never have to close apps.. iOS isn't like android at all.

If I was you I'd return it an ask for another.. It shouldn't be playing up.

Return it is then. Battery has drained to 30% now, can't be natural.

The 4S is old, but not "4 years plus" old - it came out in October 2011.

Nearly forgot I still had it today. Definitely going back, just lags and won't play audio unless you replying the jack or charger multiple times. Yet when I go onto ring tone.

Not sure what this has to do with iOS vs. Android at all, but since the rest of your posts have been pointed out as BS by others I'll just assume it's more of the same...

So, thoughts on iOS 8?

Doesn't seem to be massive visual or functional changes which is what I prefer. You can see the influences from whatsapp in Messages which isn't bad I suppose. The word suggestions have been influenced by Android but I'm having a bit of trouble enjoying that, it might grow on me though. Find My Phone will now send you one last message before the phone battery dies which is good and the health app seems pretty useful as long as you have decent apps to work alongside it. The option to have your health info and emergency contact on your lock screen is a good idea.

I panicked when it looked like my photostream had vanished but that's now in 'Collections' and the camera has had a timer and slow-shutter feature added (never had a need for the former, the latter might be good). Music playlists have been a bit more streamlined too.

Doesn't seem to be as big a jump visually as 6 was to 7 but pretty good all the same.

edit: And now you can active 4G even if you're using a network that doesn't offer it yet *cough* Virgin *cough*. Previously the option to use 4G was only available if that network supported it. Not a huge feature though....

How useful is slow shutter on a phone? Decent long exposure shots are almost impossible to achieve without a tripod.

ios 8 is a laggy mess on my ipad3

App loading slow, awful page rendering times in Safari, laggy input and I'm sure that more ills will surface as time passes.

Judging by the manner that nothing seems to have been optimised, My suspicion is that Apple have outsourced their coding to the chimp enclosure at Chester zoo.

For those with A5 chips suffering dog poo performance with the abomination that is iOS 8

You can downgrade back to 7.1.2 since the previous firmware is still being signed by Apple.

I've just done it and it was a good move. Backup thy personal data though.

I am downgrading my iPad air as ios8 has killed the wifi on it.

I will wait for a patch and try again in month or so I think :)

And in other news, Apple has decided to join the trend towards curved screens currently being used in high end TVs:

Pity they forgot to tell their customers... :)

As a selling point they could say that they mould into your body shape to be more comfortable for the owner. :erm:

Oops they just released a very b0rk3d 8.0.1 update and quickly pulled it.

Breaking cellular connections and touch-id

What with this and the crap map app debacle methinks someone over there is going to be walking a very short plank before long.

I didn't know that the iPhone has only just got the swipe function for the keyboard, via the SwiftKey app...

Well as it only ever allowed you to use the inbuilt Apple keyboard, there wasn't much chance to use the swipe keyboard till now.

It's not hating, just fun to watch things fail on launch, especially high price Apple hardware as people never learn. It was the same last year and will be the same next year.

It's the same with Xbox One, nearly a year on and they are still crap, so it's funny. It doesn't mean I don't want one, I'm just not mad enough to get one (yet).

There are a lot of premium and high-priced products on the market that don't get the same amout of crowing when they go wrong :erm:
