Celtic won the Scottish Premier League tonight, before the SPL split, first team to do that ever, cause the split is stupid and not that long implemented.

Here's hoping Hearts get second spot in the league......... :erm:

what is the point of the split, gives team in 6th a massive disadvantage over team in 7th.

Manchester United agree British record shirt deal
Manchester United have agreed a British record £56.5mi llion shirt sponsorship deal with US finance giant American International Group (AIG).

United chief executive David Gill confirmed the four-year deal, which dwarfs the £10mill ion-a-season contract Premiership champions Chelsea have with Samsung, at Old Trafford this lunchtime.

They apparently turned down the £70 million + deal with online gambling company Mansion because of the sensitivity to online gambling in the States and also the fact that one of Mansions largest shareholders is an Indonesian company called Sampoerna, that countries largest cigarette manufacturer, they are in turn now owned by Phillip Morris.

That's the nice story thay'd like you to think infact the gambling company pulled out because United where doing secret deals behind their back.

Well this "secret deal" must be worth turning down a £70m deal for a £56m deal

Any ideas what that deal was SDA?

actually the split is like a mini league, but who ever is in 6th place might not win a game in the last 6 games, and the team who is 7th could win all of their games, which means that the team in 7th place could have more points than the team in 6th place, in fact depending on the points at the time, other positions could still be higher in points than the team in 6th, but still be below 6th place..........

confusing......

which is why most scottish football fans, don't see the point in it, it was a way to make more old firm matches being played to generat more money, as far as I se it

Re: the split.

Before the SPL was increased from 10 to 12 teams they played each other 4 times.
9x4=36 games played. (cf with EPL (38) and EFL (46))

Of course increasing the number of teams increases the number of games.
> 11x4=44 games. Not as much as the EFL but considered too much considering sides have Euro games, international players and longer cup runs to factor in.
> 11x2=22games. Nowhere near enough.
> 11x3=33 games. Would favour the side playing at home twice so not fair test.
So ... they adopted the Swiss/Croatian system. 3x (33 games) then the league splits in half and the remaining six teams in each half play each other. I believe H/A is allocated on the basis of 2H 2A but i could be wrong.
33 pre-split + 5 post-split = 38

And yes, 7th invariably ends up with more pts than 6th.

United will have to be in good form to beat an in-form Arsenal side.

Am I right in thinking that Ferdinand at united is their top earner at £100,00 0 per week ?
I seem to remember that he held out for more money before signing a new contract at the start of this current season, it just seems a bit strange that a defender is earning more than say Rooney who is on £30,000 per week.

sherer 12-04-2006 10:56

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

as far as i know Rio is the top earner.. Wayne get's less as I don't think Fergie wanted to give a youngster 100K a week at his age.. in a few years time he would have to be on double that

that survey only covers the basic wages though and not scoring bonus.. win bonus, appearance fee.. plus each player has boot deals.. sponsors etc etc to take it even higher

Fire crews called to Old Trafford

Firefighters were called to tackle a blaze at Manchester United's Old Trafford football ground.
Crews were called at about noon after a fire started at the rear terrace on the seventh floor of the stadium where building work is taking place.

The fire service said it was put out within 40 minutes by three fire engines and an aerial appliance.

More than 25 firefighters dealt with the fire and building workers were cleared from the site.

Scaffolding and a gas cylinder being used at the building site at the ground were involved in the incident, said a spokesman for the fire service.

Funny that one tabloid failed to mention it. The same tabloid who are currently staging a love-in with Wayne and Colleen.

Quote:

Newspapers to pay Rooney damages

Manchester United and England footballer Wayne Rooney has accepted damages of £100,00 0 from the publishers of the Sun and the News of the World.
The newspapers had falsely reported the striker slapped his fiancee Coleen McLoughlin during a row at a nightclub in Cheshire in April last year.

Rooney has always strenuously denied the newspapers' story.

The Sun claimed he had been enjoying a night with his fellow United stars when the alleged incident took place.

Time for Nistelrooy to go I think, unless the ball is laid on a plate to him in the six yard box his contribution to the team is nil, I think he only touched the ball about half a dozen times tonight and on one occasion where he was clean through and offside, the keeper saved the shot, but he still moaned at the linesman, WHY?

I think the guy is a liability to Manchester United Football Club and should be shown the door at the earliest possible opportunity.

On the other hand, Saha in comparison, has been a breath of fresh air, hence our recent good run of late.

That depends on your interpretation of "doing much out of the box". It's true he has only scored once outside the box, but that doesn't mean he doesn't contribute. I can't see Sir Alex Ferguson hanging on to a player that doesn't contribute, or any manager for that matter.

Stanley were not as many believe founder members of the Football League. That honour belongs to Th' Owd Reds, Accrington FC. Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

I cracked up earlier...

Interviewer - "What's your opinion on the goal. Should the ball have been put out of play?"
Martin Jol - "I don't know I didn't see it."

Interviewer - "What did you think of the Spurs goal? Martin Jol said he didn't see it?"
Arsene Wenger - "How could he not see it when he's sitting on the bench right in front of it?"

Hopefully someone will ask Wenger that next time he uses the "didn't see it" excuse.

VERY nice to see them lose again but at the same time it means the scouse won - a bit of a dilemma for the rest of us :erm:

Whoops....... Hartlepool 3 Forest 2

Still, at the beginning of the season things were not looking good with Megson in charge, maybe next season eh ?

That will teach me. Still only 4 goals behind Swansea with 6pts up for grabs. Our run-in is Bournemouth (H) and Bradford (A) and they have Saafend (H) and Chesterfield (A) which is trickier.

Bristol C and Oldham I consider academic since they need to gain 3 pts in 2 games, which involves one net win plus GD swing which is less likely.

Hopefully we can beat the foreigners to the play-offs then watch the smile drain from Lee Tr*ndle's face if we both reach the playoffs and whoop their ass or if they don't make it at all - mug.

Good luck in your quest to reach the play off's, but I am sure Russ might not agree :)

nffc I think you will still pull through.

I told my mate (forest fan) you need 73pts to make it so 2 wins out of 3 and hartlepool was going to be the toughest game of the 3 because they are fighting for their lives, but I think you will win the next 2.

Well I hope West Ham do well today - can't really see it myself after last week's performance against Boro. The decision for today is - do we watch the match at a pub or do I order Sky Sports? :D
