Extra viewers using the +1s brings in more cash from advertisers for very little effort by the broadcaster.

The extremely low cost of broadcasting content you already own is presumably more than offset by viewers. Viewers who are presumably actually watching live, therefore watching the adverts.

It also gives a brand/family of channel greater prominence in EPGs.

Yes, so that I can record in SD. All these channels are going HD, but the disc space remains the same.

I agree. I record everything in HD and rarely go above 10% usage.

I do watch what I record and delete after watching. No need to archive programs you’ll never watch.

Exactly , I tend to use it as a) a time shift , to avoid ads ,long , boring car driving , filler etc. Or b) because two shows are on at the same time . Now and then because I am hooked on a Netflix show.

If you go into Diagnostics you will find that Al Jazeera English is really a HD Channel but Virgin still says it a SD Channel.

Audio PID: AC3.

Sky Crime +1 is:

Audio PID: MPEG2.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

SD channels can use AC3 audio but it does indicate that it could possibly be scaled down to SD from a HD source.

Digital Bit rates says Virgin only use AC3 for "SD Channels" for both Al Jazeera channels - all rest are using MPEG2.

Note Al Jazeera did stop broadcasting in SD in 2020 all over the world.

Which would explain why it is being scaled down. :D

You would have think Virgin would have move them to a HD Stream by now.

But saying that this is Virgin we are talking about - they a joke.

Depends on Virgin's contract with Al Jazeera.

Video stream stats are: H.264 Video, 16:9, 704x576i, 25 fps, 4:2:0

So definitely not HD.

VM claim that Sky Kids HD is included in the Maxit TV package but it's not available for me...

This exciting new HD channel bursting with family favourites is available at no extra cost for Mix, Full House and Maxit customers, or customers with a Kids Pick subscription
