According to the latest FIFA rule book he doesn't have to mean it.

Fifa's laws of the game for the 2017-18 season contains the following entry...

"Serious foul play - a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play."

What about a clash of heads, send them both off. He's got a three game game ban to come on top of this to, harsh imo

Not for Mane, he left a United fullback badly injured when he deliberately went clean through on him a couple of years back when still at Southampton and got away with it .

And it wasn't a clash of heads, it was a boot in the face. ;)

You cannot base your judgement now on what happened 2 years ago.

But the rule doesn't just cover boots in the face it covers any challenge that endangers an opponent, I'd say head injuries are serious so going by this new rule, send them both of

Wouldn't matter if it was, there was clearly no brain in there when he behaved recklessly.

He was doing what any striker would be expected to do, that is go for a 50-50 ball. It wasn't malicious at all as his eyes were fixed on the ball, however i admit it could be seen as reckless with the height of his foot and I'd have been annoyed had it been the other way round. Could easily have been a yellow with a different referee, I've seen worse not get a red but it is what it is. At least he made a public apology to the player.

Do try and keep up, this is what you bandying those new rules about should mean, besides which that notwithstanding hasn't there already been two similar incidents to Manes already this season which didn't result in red cards and three match bans

Might be a different story if he hasn't abandoned a certain club though

Of course some think he did it recklessly which of course is embittered tribal nonsense as he apologised and that should be the end of it.

Fixed on the ball apart from when he looked to see where Ederson was. ;)

Anyway he has apologised for being reckless so that's ok now........
