Re: iPhone Tips (was UK Release info)

Had a look at the Apple UK store last week and the 3G iphones were listed with prices (£199 for the 16GB if I remember rightly) and the option to add to basket. Now of course it has changed and merely provides a link to where you can buy one from a third party. I'm assuming this was some sort of mistake.

That's right. The new iPhone is not and won't ever be available from Apple. It would have to be sourced through O2 or CPW. This is because it has to be activated on purchase or obtained after completing a contract agreement.

Thought I was seeing things but I did check that the prices were definitely GBP and that it was the UK store. Someone at Apple must have dropped a clanger.

O2 are doing it Pay-as-you-go.

I would have thought Apple would be punting them at the same price via their site.

So no more "Buy in a store, take home & Jailbreak" then?

Prices are £99 for 8gig, £159 for 16gig if you get with O2.

You have to get these versions because they are activated in store as Punky said, this is because O2 are now subsidising the phone and don't want to be paying for iPhones where they will not receive contract income.

Essientially, yes. There's still no official word on the policy yet. Also sometimes the references refer to AT&T, O2 or both. The latest is that the phones will be sent to the store bricked, and then the store will have custom software which will unbrick it.

The reference before that said that you can walk away from an AT&T store with an iPhone and without a contract, but if will brick itself if its not activated within 30 days.

Anyone know if the PAYG phones would be locked to the network? I wouldn't mind using one of these to replace my extremely dodgy windows smartphone which is actually on Orange. Mainly for the push email functionality.

Ta. Makes sense if they're subsidising it.

I am quite tempted, now it has 3G & HSDPA etc.

Although, luckily for my wallet, I still have a fair while left (just over a year! Damn 18 month contract lol) on my T-Mob N95 contract, so can't go off & make an iPhone impulse buy. Heh, never know, by the time my contract is out, Apple may have brought out a 3rd one that actually has a decent camera.

I didn't check Giz today, there is some more info out now, albeit its AT&T specific. You'll probably still need to wait until its out to find out what's really going to happen.

People are already talking about the next iPhone. There are rumours about the next iPhone in 2010... It might have the new Atom processor. Think of that.... A phone that's got the computing power of a 1.6ghz Celeron :)

According to the text from O2 this morning your can order an iPhone from 8:00AM.

Of course seeing they've only had a month or so to prepare their website has fallen over and it's not working. :td:

I was on at 8.30 and it was working fine:)

I really want one but I only just upgraded my T-Mobile contract in May so am stuck with that for 10months:(

Can't really afford to pay two contracts together.

Re: iPhone Tips (was UK Release info)

I just rang my mate up at the Skypark in Glasgow and they know nothing about being able to order the new iPhone. Neither do the upgrades department or staff accounts (which I rang).

Seems there is some contradiction as O2's website clearly states that it's available to order (pre order), but their upgrade shop must of taken a heavy hit as the upgrade section of the site is down.
