Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Text from that Broadcast Now article:

"Virgin Media is poised to close a deal to carry BT Sport’s three sports channels on its cable TV platform, making them available to a further 4m potential customers.

The two companies have been in negotiations for a number of months but both have been keen to strike a deal ahead of BT Sport’s launch on Thursday 1 August.

BT Sport has the rights to the Scottish Premier League, which begins its season on Friday 2 August, and wanted to have carriage on Virgin in time for its first TV game - Partick Thistle versus Dundee United - so as not to alienate football fans who are VM customers. The English Premier League season starts on August 17th.

One of the sticking points of negotiations has been whether Virgin will bundle the new channels in with its TV XL premium package - as was previously the case with ESPN - or whether it will charge for them as a standalone product.

It is not clear which route has been taken, but a Virgin Media spokesman said: We’re always looking bring the best possible value and choice of great quality content to our customers and we’re talking to BT about how we could potentially make the forthcoming BT Sport package available.”

Earlier this year, Virgin Media sent an online survey out to customers asking whether they would be willing to pay slightly more for their top package if it were to include Premier League football and Sky Atlantic, which could pave the way for this move.

BT Sport is being sold as a standalone channel on the Sky platform for £12 a month in SD and £15 a month in HD."

What are the three BT Sport channels? I thought there was four (1 & 2 plus HD versions of them).

Hi, by the way, been lurking on this forum past few days since switching to Virgin from Sky...

^ thanks. Just wanted to get all my services with one provider - as Sky can't offer Fibre in my area it was a no-brainer. I actually end up saving £30p/m and increasing BB from 30mb to 60mb at the same time (previously had Sky TV but Virgin BB/Line Rental).

Ah, I keep forgetting about ESPN now being part of BT - thanks.

It does and the price for BT Sports for me is £0.

Last year a subscribed to skysports and espn(as part of TV xl) for this a got to see all the televised premier league matches. Why is/should that same number of premier league matches cost me an extra £15 this season? Thats many multiples of inflation on top.

VM were able to offer ESPN has part of the XL TV package due to the way they did things. They won't be able to do that again. ESPN was a tenner on Sky, so from their customers viewpoint, they're only paying a few pound more.

As always, no need to complain - just don't buy if it doesn't suit in terms of product or price.

Of course, but then BT must have had a figure in mind for the number of new BB customers taking their sports offer. Maybe they've surpassed that number and are looking to increase income through regular wholesale subs. If that's the right term...

Maybe not many virgin customers were moving over for several reasons 1) they would have to change their tv subscriber as well, which sky customers don't

2) A lot of virgin customers may not bother to have a phoneline, seeing as they don't need one to have broadband, so going to bt they'd have to have one and how much would that cost them

The don'y have to, as ESPN was a bonus. What they do need to do is provide a sweetener for customers to stay and something to draw new ones. I still reckon that's where Sky Atlantic and other HD variants might play the part, leaving BT Sports as a stand alone premium add-on.

They don't have to compensate as channels are added and removed all the time and they have pretty much said that the price won't change as a result of channels being added/removed.

However due to ESPN also being treated as a standalone premium offering there is a perceived value of £10. The most fair offering would be a £5pm charge for XL customers for BT & ESPN in HD.

I expect it to be excluded from XL but charged at a discounted £8 to £10 pm for XL customers and maybe free for first month.

We will know soon enough.

Virgin Media is poised to close a deal to carry BT Sport’s three sports channels on its cable TV platform, making them available to a further 4m potential customers.

BT Sport is being sold as a standalone channel on the Sky platform for £12 a month in SD and £15 a month in HD

I thought the thread would explode once this was announced.

Media boy is this what your insider said? Stand alone or within XL. This would be the next question. Do you have any info on this matter?

Henkesghost 29-07-2013 16:18

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

I know channels are added and channels are taken away without any change in price. In my opinion movies and sport are premium channels. Virgin have lost ESPN as of the end of this month, to me that is losing a large chunk of premium content. Virgin have reiterated they will not reduce the price for this loss. Atlantic also confirmed as not coming it seems, so what is replacing this loss? BT has been announced, good news but its a new provider of sport carrying pretty much the same content we have lost from XL with no reduction in price. Virgin cannot expect XL customers to pay top dollar for BT Sports, I'd guess you could equate it to a £20-£25 swing If that is the intention. Really interested to see how Virgin play this.

Still waiting on insiders to confirmed on what Broadcast has reported today is true or not.

If it true in my own view we may see both ESPN and ESPN HD moving to higher channel numbers 537+ or 547+.

In my opinion I don't think BT Sport will be in XL - it will be a standalone package - still might get Sky Atlantic in XL :)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Just an idea!!!

If the XL line up is not satisfactory after the announcements or by a specific date then we should initially do a mass emails to some one senior in Virgin (Perhaps Mr Blot or Richard:) )! to make them aware of how strong our frustration? At the very least it may fill their inbox before the IT wizards put email filters in place!

If someone could nominate a date and time, who to email and perhaps someone could draft an email for everyone to use? It needs to be witty and concise, my Gnglish is pretty poor or I would offer.
If this idea is taken up please make it after the 18th August or I will not be able participate!

An insider I know says the BT and VM management think that you eating your hat will be great publicity. As a result BT say they have decided to allow VM include BT Sports on XL at no extra cost (at least until you've finished eating your hat).

If its not in the XL pack the other alternative is for them to bundle it into the Sky Sports pack. XL customers wouldn't be happy but it would certainly make the sports bundle more attractive you would think VM will want to get one over sky if they can

They could do that.. But I still think it will offered as a standalone package

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

I have the XL package
I have the luck of Stan Collymore when he was transferred to Liverpool. Big money purchase, young and with the world at his feet.

What happened?

He messed it up, got into booze and shenanigans and ended up getting arrested for dogging.

So yes i would probably say my luck will lead to BT Sport being a stand alone channel. If this happens i will accept blame.

here's an idea

lets suspend this thread until something is ACTUALLY officially announced.

this thread started at the beginning of the month and we have 150 pages + of posts of absolutely NOTHING. constant will BT come or not ?will Atlantic come or not? - i am losing the will to live.

suspend the BT, Sky Sports thread as well as that has another 100 pages of nothing as well

Or you just go to the change log thread and check when something changes?

if you want confirmed rumours go to search posters- search media boy and see his updates.

i enjoy speaking to these people about potential changes on virgin media. the above actions will mean you dont need to be bombarded with our conversation

best wishes,

I wonder if virgin media will announce something official tomorrow 2 days before the launch of BT sport which is exactly what they did for ESPN

I think someone in power up there is doing this on purpose and being a bad WUM (wind up merchant)

Marleigh 29-07-2013 18:18

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

I'm interested to see what will happen with BT Sport. I suspect a lot of people are like me and subscribed to the other stuff on the strength of having ESPN and especially ESPN America.

Without those, if BT isn't included in the XL package there is no reason for me to even have Virginmedia TV, and without the TV then there is no reason for the phone/broadband. I'll probably switch to some other deal. I would imagine I'm not the only one considering that.
