Powerstar golf is now a free download, although it is limited but you do get to play a few hole's.

Also has anyone noticed we now get good discounts for digital games from time to time making the disc version seem expensive?

Currently Fifa is 40% off in the store and plants vs zombies was reduced last week.

Yup, I got it last night :)

I'm not that bothered about external storage support, but it's good to have the option.

Auto sign-in is handy, removing one of the only uses I have for Kinect.

What I really want is 3D BD support, then I can finally retire my PS3...

Yeah, we get for some reason you can't buy a PS4 until it has blueray support, as mind boggling as that is. I have a 3D blue ray player, the Sky 3D channel, it's even possible to download 3D movies an play them off a memory stick.

Just admit you currently can't afford a PS4, I have a Xbone and a PS4.

Just admit you currently can't afford a PS4, I have a Xbone and a PS4.

I have no room or sockets for any more consoles.

The TV sits on top of a 3 tier unit, with the Xbox One on the bottom and the Sky+HD on the middle.

I have another 3 tier unit that has my AV Receiver, PS3, and Xbox 360. [and the AV Receiver is a brand new Yamaha RX-V477, replacing my old Yamaha DSP-A5. Money is not the problem]

To get a PS4 would require getting rid of the PS3 to make space... and I can't get rid of the PS3 as it is currently the only console capable of playing 3D BDs.

As for cost... wrong. I could easily buy one right now if I had the space for it. Hell, I could actually buy a dozen PS4s if (for some strange reason) I wanted to. I have a large chunk of cash sitting in my savings account courtesy of a recent bonus from work.

Money is not the issue, space and sockets is...

Sockets is not a valid reason, you could fit another socket, or a multi socket/extension. As for space it seems it's time to buy a new tv unit.

I'm sorry but your reasoning just does not make any sense. So I ask, why don't you just go an buy a PS4? As you're so desperate for one an can afford one, not buying one is quite illogical.

Tezcatlipoca 25-05-2014 22:12

Re: The Xbox One Thread

I cannot fit any more sockets. The TV corner has two double sockets. Two of the four sockets have things plugged in that cannot use extension strips, the other two sockets have six-way extension strips that are full.

And I'm not buying a new unit just to get another shelf, when that shelf would only be needed temporarily given that one or both of the new gen consoles will eventually be getting 3D BD support (quite possibly the X1, as MS has given more info about that than Sony has about the PS4 getting it).

I'm content to wait, unless something comes out that I really *must* play, in which case I may end up going "sod it!" and just get a new unit anyway and find some way of sorting out the power issue.

Here comes the troll again.

I am the same as Matt, I will wait to get a PS4 until 3D Blu ray support is there. I have electrical sockets but no space on my AV unit, once I can replace the PS3 with a PS4 I will do so.

Neither do I have an XBox One, mainly as I am getting married in 5 weeks so I haven't had the money to buy one yet, however as it stands as soon as the wedding is out the way the 360 is getting replaced with a One but the PS3 will remain until there is 3D Blu Ray support on the PS4.

Sockets and space are very much valid reasons.

Not buying one is not illogical at all. What is however is your thought process.

Re: The Xbox One Thread

tbh I did actually look into new units, given that I was going to have to unplug things anyway when I got my new AVR this week.

But replacing the TV unit with a 4 tier one would put the TV too high, and none of the units I found were as narrow as the current unit used for the AVR/360/PS3, which would have been a problem for replacing that one.

While I *do* want a PS4, I'm not desperate for one as the only game that currently interests me is Infamous.

If I had the space and the sockets, then I would just buy one, even for the one game, as it would be a new toy/gadget. But I don't...

One alternative potential solution is if the rumoured next gen remasters of the Mass Effect trilogy and Halo tetralogy are real... The ME & Halo games are the only real reason I still have my 360, so if those do get announced this year, then I can ditch that...

Bogof 26-05-2014 00:37

So you have 14 devices connected to the 4 sockets behind your TV? I'm affraid your argument makes little sense. It is perfectly viable for you to purchase a PS4 and use it.

The 3D argument holds no water, to the point it is mind boggling, I have a X360,PS3,WiiU,Xbone,PS4. I have had extra sockets added in my home to accommodate extra devices.

I just cannot understand your reasoning here, unless money is an issue. Every other argument is so easily solvable.

How does it hold no water?

I have a 3D TV and 3D Blu-ray Discs.

I have a PS3 to play those 3D Blu-ray Discs.

Buying a PS4 would mean retiring the PS3 due to a lack of space and a lack of sockets, which would mean not having anything to play my 3D Blu-ray Discs with.

Not solvable, as explained. I have no free sockets, and have no space.

Another issue would be getting landlord approval to install more sockets. Might be tricky getting approval when it involves messing with the electrics.

Getting landlord approval for anything is a nightmare! Took months of back and forth just to get permission for FTTC last year (needed a DEK fitting)

Re: The Xbox One Thread

So you may as well wait because not only will you save money on a PS4 but you'll also not have to suffer from attempting to get permission from your landlord.

Re: The Xbox One Thread

I'm hopeful that E3 will see the announcement of the Halo *and* ME remasters, then I can ditch the 360.

And the X1 *will* be getting 3D BD support at some point, MS has said that, just not when. Now that external storage support is coming in June, hopefully 3D BD support will be next on the list as MS knows it's a popular feature request.

Ideal scenario would be both of those, then I could ditch the 360 *and* the PS3 and get a PS4 *and* a Wii U. Mario Kart looks quite good...

"According to a report" it'll be released this year. No official announcement yet though...

Tezcatlipoca 26-05-2014 04:10

Re: The Xbox One Thread

Yup. Absolutely nothing official.

Engadget ran the original rumour, saying that its sources told it that "Halo: The Master Chief Collection" would be coming this year, rather than just the assumed Halo 2 Anniversary.

The only official announcement we've had is regarding Halo 5: Guardians.

However... 343i said in that announcement that our "journey" would begin *this year* and that it would be a "giant leap" (or something like that), which could suggest there's something big to come, such as the rumoured Halo collection. After all, new gen remasters of all four numbered Halo games would certainly be a "giant leap" compared to just Halo 2 Anniversary...

---------- Post added at 04:10 ---------- Previous post was at 04:07 ----------

As for Mass Effect...

IIRC, that rumour came from a retailer putting up a listing for an ME trilogy new gen remaster, so there's even less to that than to the Halo rumour.

But... this whole remastering thing does seem to be becoming more common, though.

Kind of old news.

EPG data was added to the Xbox One's "One Guide" back in April, for people in the system update preview programme. MS then announced in May that it would be going public with the upcoming June update (due this week).

Yep :)

Spartan Assault is average, but Max is meant to be quite good.

One crucial difference between Games with Gold on 360 and Xbox One, though:

On the Xbox One, an active XBL Gold sub is required not just for the free download but also to play the game. If you stop subscribing, you lose the ability to play the game. This makes it more like Sony's PS+ on Xbox One. [On 360, once you've download the games, they are yours to keep regardless of later subscription status]

I still can't be bothered with that. I just don't see the point in routing my Sky+HD STB via my Xbox One - waste of power, and I'd rather just use the Sky+HD remote or the Sky+ iOS app.

On a related note:

The updated SmartGlass app for iOS was released today. It adds the OneGuide so you can use it to control your Sky/VM box, plus also has other new features such as the ability to rearrange Pins on the console.

July preview details

Quote:

Xbox One July Update Preview

Hey folks…we’re here in Los Angeles at E3 2014, and it has been a packed house all week long. We filled the Galen Center on Monday for our annual E3 show and rolled out an incredible line-up of blockbuster exclusives for this holiday and next year. And directly after our show, we held a great panel discussion with Phil, Yusuf and others – for 200 of our biggest Xbox fans. This was the first event of its kind for us… and we loved it. You can also read Phil’s thoughts on the past week at E3 here.

As we pack up our booth, we end E3 just as we started: Our focus is on you. You’ve shaped Xbox into what it is today, and we can’t thank you enough. We look forward to hearing more from you over the coming weeks – now, officially on Xbox Feedback – a dedicated channel for all your thoughts and recommendations. From what we’ve seen this week, your feedback continues to be amazing. As of today, more than 65,000 fans like you have suggested more than 4300 ideas and contributed over 180,000 votes.

We can’t wait to dig into your ideas and explore what may be possible for the future of Xbox. What better way to keep this momentum going than to share what’s coming in July? Here’s a shortlist of features rolling out in the next few days to folks getting early access to the Xbox One system update.

*Snap Mode for Achievements. As we showed at our E3 Green Carpet event before the show, we’re offering an easier way to track and view your achievements in the moment. With Achievement Snap, you can track your achievement progress in real time without ever leaving the game. You can also ‘Get Help’ on any Achievements you’re struggling with. Xbox will scan the web for you and deliver relevant tips and strategy content right to your TV.
Double-tap to Snap. Double-tap the button on your controller to bring up Snap Center, where you can launch Achievements or any other snap-able app, without leaving your game. Already have an app snapped? Double-tap quickly switches between your game and the snapped app.

*Choice of Spoken Language. Folks in New Zealand, Ireland and Austria, with this update in July, will be able to select voice control using the English or German voice models from other countries. And if you’re an expat in an English-speaking country, you, too, can choose any of the other English language models that fit you.

*Future Digital Bundles and Compilation Discs. We’re doing some work now so that publishers will have options for great digital bundle and disc compilation offerings in the future. As we test this feature, we’ll be seeing more flexible combinations of game titles and game content.

*‘Like’ Game DVR clips. We’re adding the ability to ‘Like’ all your favorite Game DVR clips as well as activity feed items in SmartGlass.
Once again, thank you for your incredible support. You’ve helped us make E3 2014 a memorable one. But we have no intention of letting our foot off the gas. We can’t wait to roll out these new features in July as we pave the way for an amazing line-up of blockbusters and exclusives this holiday.

The Snap Centre will definitely be useful - especially for anyone who does not use/have Kinect. Probably the closest we'll get to having the Guide back.

We already have snap centr don't we, when you go to snap then all the snapable apps are listed?

Ah, good point. I tend not to bother with Snap, so forget it lists them like that.

I guess what the main change is with that is the "double tap to Snap" - now people can Snap stuff without going back to Home or using Kinect.

Yeah, it's annoying that it's taken so long for some of these things :(

It is good though that MS is actually listening to the feedback.

It's actually really good.

I'm not generally a fan of 3D - I think that most of the time it's a pointless gimmick.

But what few 3D BDs I have look bloody good on my LG... Pacific Rim, Prometheus, DREDD, and of course the gorgeous Gravity. I've got The Hobbit part 1, too, as the only way to get the Extended Edition was to get the 2D+3D box. Not watched it in 3D yet, though.

The glasses don't look like anything special but they do the job - it's passive 3D, not active, so doesn't need those battery-powered active 3D shutter glasses.

One thing putting me off 3D is that my eyesight in my left eye is terrible. If I only look out of that eye then I can't even read because it's all blurry. Shouldn't be an issue on passive 3D though...

I'm in a similar boat. I had a lazy left eye when i was younger that was never corrected so when i close my right eye i cannot read at all with my left.

I thought for years i couldn't see 3d. When i seen films at the cinema in 3d it always looked normal to me.

Got a new Panasonic 3d tv about 4 months ago and i downloaded a couple of 3d demos and i could actually see 3d. Got a fright the first time i seen it. :)

I'm the same as I am partially sighted and my right eye only has 10% vision and left is 60% and I thought 3D wouldn't work for me but it does. Well the pop out stuff does when stuff is flying at you but the depth stuff doesn't as I don't notice any difference

EA launches Xbox One subscription gaming service for $4.99 a month or $29.99 for a year.

This is currently only a trial for some users, however this will enable them to play a range of games for very little money.

EA says it will eventually be rolled out to all Xbox One owners.

If the range of games are good then it maybe a no brainer getting it.

If you purchase a game (with the 10% discount) you can keep it after you cancel your subscription. You will however lose access to the vault games that you haven't purchased.

I've signed up for 1 month to try it out at the moment and see what else gets added as I already own Fifa and Peggle 2 on digital and used to own (and sold on) Battlefield physical.

I've connected my tivo up and it seems to be working ok and the oneguide itself looks really interesting but it seems to be lacking loads of channels for the voice commands. Is there a step I missing maybe?

Getting it to understand you is one thing! but

'xbox select' will let you see what commands you can give on any particular screen and you will get used to it!

Mine has started to not understand me again after playing nice for so long. Think I will have to recalibrate tomorrow :( (again!)

I think it's a great idea.

Not everyone has a Sky/VM box they can route via the HDMI input... And even those that do have one can't always actually use that feature depending upon the "wife factor" ;)

Just a pity it's single-tuner only, and (as yet) has no PVR functions other than live pause.

http://majornelson.com/2014/08/12/ki...t-coming-soon/

Next update will include a Media Player app with support for many formats including MKV (!), plus Snap Centre will get Friends etc. finally making it the equivalent of the Guide.

Quote:

New “Friends” section – the new Friends section has been available for a few early access Preview members and we’re expanding it to everyone enrolled in the Preview program. The new Friends section enables users to see at a glance what’s going on with their friends. They can stay up-to-date with their current activities, the most popular games their friends are playing, and a Gamerscore leaderboard to see who has improved their Gamerscore over the last 30 days.

Snap Center – Some of gamers’ favorite features in the Xbox 360 guide, are coming to Xbox One in a way that’s now truly be side-by-side with games. Messages, friends, parties, and achievements will all be available in the new Snap Center, providing a seamless way to switch back and forth without having to leave a game.

Threaded Messages – keeping gamers in their games while they multitask has been a huge focus. The new Messages app features threaded messages with the full conversation history – including embedded links to Game DVR clips – that can be viewed without interrupting gameplay.

Media Player – a new app will be available soon that enables users to play media files from either an attached USB device or from a network connected home media server that supports DLNA protocols. The preview version of the Media Player app will initially only support USB devices, with DLNA support coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and mkv which will be added by the end of the year. See below for additional file formats.

Xbox One Digital TV Tuner –announced last week, this new accessory will enter a limited preview program in Europe (UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain), in advance of its retail launch beginning in October.

Stream TV to SmartGlass – launching first in markets receiving the Xbox Digital TV Tuner, Xbox One owners will be able to stream their TV across their home network to their smartphones and tablets using the Xbox SmartGlass app. They can also pause, play and rewind as well as change channels, without interrupting gameplay on the Xbox One. This will work for SmartGlass apps on Windows, iOS, and Android.

Boot to TV – Now Xbox One owners will be able to set their console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.

Live TV mini guide – for markets where OneGuide is available, a new mini guide on the bottom of the screen will display details about the TV content that is currently playing. Users can quickly change channels and see what’s on other channels, while still watching TV.

Country Expansion – we’re doing a lot of work on the backend to prepare for Xbox One to launch in 29 new markets
in the coming weeks.

We are reaching out to you to let you know that Microsoft recently identified a system error in our sales process that was incorrectly applying Value Added Tax (VAT) to some products in a small number of transactions on our site.* We have identified that your purchase of Microsoft Complete was affected and VAT was incorrectly applied to your purchase.* We are in the process of correcting our system error.* Please expect a refund of the applicable VAT amount to your bank account or Credit Card soon.* While the timing of the refund may vary depending on your banking institution or credit card company you should receive your refund by July 15, 2014. Info on September update which is out now for a limited set of people

Quote:

*Parties – The Party App has been re-organized, so you can now see what activities everyone in your party is doing and tell more clearly who is playing in the same game with you. You can also more quickly perform common actions like muting, joining, or sending game invites. Also, Parties now have a Party Leader. This person can change whether the party requires invitations, and she/he can remove others from the party.

*New Friends Section – The new Friends section has been available for a few early access preview members and we’re expanding it to additional participants enrolled in the preview program. The new Friends section enables you to see at a glance what’s going on with your friends. You can stay up-to-date with your current activities, the most popular games your friends are playing, and a Gamerscore leaderboard to see who has improved their Gamerscore the most over the last 30 days. We’ll continue to roll this feature out to all participants in the coming updates.

*Media Player – A new app will be available soon that enables you to play media files from either an attached USB device or from a network connected home media server that supports DLNA protocols. The preview version of the Media Player app will initially only support USB devices, with DLNA support coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and mkv which will be added by the end of the year. *Xbox One Digital TV Tuner – Announced last week, this new hardware accessory will enter a limited preview program in Europe (UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain), in advance of its retail launch beginning in October.
Stream TV to SmartGlass – Launching first in markets receiving the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner, you will be able to stream your TV across your home network to your smartphones and tablets using the Xbox SmartGlass app. You can also pause, play and rewind as well as change channels, without interrupting gameplay on Xbox One.

*Boot to TV – Now you will be able to set your console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.

*Live TV Miniguide – For markets where OneGuide is available, a new mini guide on the bottom of the screen will display details about the TV content that is currently playing. You can quickly change channels and see what’s on other channels, while still watching TV.

*SmartGlass Updates – You can now post status messages from the Activity Feed as well as add comments and share items from both your Activity Feed and from Game Clips. Along with the new comment and share features, a personalized Activity Feed has been added to your profile. Messages have been updated to a new layout supporting a full conversation view. Additionally, we are adding the ability to record game clips directly from the Now Playing bar. Finally, if you upgrade the app directly we have introduced a What’s New page highlighting the features of each release.

*“Xbox On” in New Markets – Adding support for additional markets to use the “Xbox On” Kinect voice command to power on consoles: Australia, Canada (French), Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil – a top used feature.
Country Expansion – We’re doing a lot of work on the backend to prepare for Xbox One to launch in 29 new markets in the coming weeks.

*Multiple GameDVR Deletes – You will be able to choose multiple GameDVR clips to delete at once in the Upload app.
Save your Avatar Gamerpic – A new option is now available to save Avatar GamerPics to your OneDrive.
Settings Updates – New options help you manage your controllers and accessories. Also, Instant Sign-In is being moved to Settings, to the Sign-in, security & Passkey area.

*Bandwidth Usage Display – Located in Network Settings under the Troubleshooting column, Bandwidth Usage will show you how much bandwidth your Xbox One is consuming over a period of time. This is useful if you want to track against bandwidth caps set by ISPs in certain markets.

The Mediaplayer is primitive i tested 2 files via a USB stick so it may have not played as smooth as it could have, but the old MKV file i had wouldn't play, probably due to incompatible audio which i will have to look into when i have time, however a Divx HD movie played fine although i would like it to me smoother.

You have to install the Mediaplayer app via the SYSTEM/STORAGE settings the first time you plug the USB stick in.

When I was on the preview forums earlier in the week, they said that all the tuner previewers had already been picked (only 100 per country, I think), so I guess they've decided to add some more people since then.
