I just wish people would leave MB alone as if it was not for him who else would be able to state what he does in a thread like this (come on show of hands). If people do not like it or have a problem with his grammar I wish they would take a long walk off a short pier.

Well said devil as MB has done a fine job for years and remember at the end of the day they don't erect statues for critics do they.:)

Too true sir, too true.

It seems some people only want to pick up on MB's grammar. No-one else is ever picked up on it.

It's all rather cowardly my eyes.

Cable Forum, in my humble opinion, wouldn't be worth visiting if The Coming Soon thread didn't exist. This version of the Coming Soon thread has received 215,489 views in just 10 weeks. Whilst we all contribute to the thread, the main driver is Media Boy and his inside stories. Sure they don't always come to fruition, but he can only post the info he gets.

Media Boy, you are a legend. Cable Forum should thank you for the time and effort you put in. Without this thread Cable Forum wouldn't get as many hits day in, day out.

Morons complaining about grammar and spelling need to go find a woman and get their frustrations out of their systems. I love this thread, although some people ruin the reading of this thread. Carry on MB, ignore the grammar and spelling Nazis.

Yes but he has already stated that the suppositions are based on deals signed with other broadcasters in 2013 and it's not really comparing like with like. I would expect that, taking carriage deals and the history of cable channel launches into account, questions would be raised. Questions such as why would all of Viacom's channels be added when channels were removed in the previous deal? Situations do change but that's a big assumption with no insider knowledge. Similarly, A+E Networks UK is a joint operation with Sky, just because History +1 is added to the VM lineup doesn't automatically mean that the HD versions will also be coming (given Sky's involvement and track record).

Even so, it is useful for MB to mention that these channels are also owned by the company involved in a new carriage deal and to keep an eye out for some of them possibly appearing on the EPG. I'm not quite sure however that it is really useful to name specific channels and suggest that they will be appearing within a specified timescale with no insider knowledge. If anything, that only harms MB's reputation for accuracy and damages his track record if the channels don't then appear.

Quote:

If you choose to take a supposition as fact and then get disappointed when it doesn't come off then you're the only one to blame, I reckon.
I agree that MB does make it clear when he makes suggestions without insider knowledge. However, other posters take it as gospel and repeat it as fact. That really does cloud the issue and confuse other forum users who possibly didn't read MB's disclaimer.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

I doubt we'll see BT Sport on VM.

The purpose of the exercise from BTs point of view is to establish a relationship with the end user so that they can attempt to flog them broadband and phone services too. Unlike ESPN, BT want to handle the billing themselves. I'm not sure that VM would be happy to allow them to collect the details of lots of their customers.

It'd be like a turkey voting for Christmas.

In my opinion BT may be looking at VM customers as easier to 'chip off' than Sky's because many of us see VMs broadband as the deciding factor. Now that BT also has fibre broadband to offer we might be ripe for the picking, particularly if we can't access BT Sport.

Pure speculation, but worth a thought.

nodrogd 12-06-2013 14:34

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

It's not feasable for BT to run their subs through Virgin's system as the hardware & cards aren't open access like Sky's. It's a question of whether BT can do without the x million paying customers it could possibly have on Virgin.

Oh ok then, I will get rid of TiVo, go down to 4 hd channels, lose the 3 mobiles my kids have for a fiver each as part of my package, oh sorry didn't realise you didn't do additional outlets, ok I will get rid of my v plus out of my bedroom and the one in the kitchen. We do have a similar box to TiVo but you would have to give up Sky sports.

This is true. Sky customers buy BT Sports direct from BT, not via Sky. If VM get it, (which I think they will) this will probably be the only route they will be able to get it.

Possibly, the additional BBC RB streams should already be active by that point. With so many channels having been added to lower packages it will be interesting to see ho VM plans to bulk up the XL package, especially with the ESPN channels probably going at the end of July. It will be interesting to see how VM plans to maintain value for money on the XL package.

Don't Sky customers get a free broadband service? Even so, it might still work out cheaper to pay for BT broadband (which might be better) and get BT Sports for free.

Media Boy, take a look at your RTÉ listings, you seem to have added some digital TV channels to the radio channels in your listing, RTÉ Two HD and RTÉ jr, but haven't added RTÉ News Now or the original TV channels: RTÉ One and RTÉ Two. Do you have some specific information / reason for listing it this way?

Great for cricket fans but do we seriously need this? A channel dedicated to cricket and England playing in the Ashes.

SKY need to remember there are plenty of people in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland who subscribe to SKY Sports who don't give a toss about cricket...... especially the England team. To other home nation countries, especially Scotland, cricket is a niche sport.

My brother just downsized his Sports package with Virgin from the full SKY Sports package to just SKY Sports 1 & 2. Basically that is one of his 2 sports channels ruined for almost 2 months.

These channels will never broadcast here (mainland Britain), so I'd suggest they get removed from the list.

Maybe the TV Channels will not appear.

But maybe the Radio Channels will as - RTE Radio 1 broadcasts right now on Virgin Channel 917 in old Telewest areas.

I will think about removing the TV Channels on the next update.

RTE is the state broadcaster of Ireland, Southern Ireland that is. They have the Irish rights to shows such as Eastenders. So there is zero chance these tv channels will appear in Britain. For political reasons, NI although in the UK, is allowed to have the RTE tv channels.

I would tend to agree with Horizon, it would cost Ireland too much to acquire broadcast rights for the UK. This is a similar situation to Germany making its channels available free to air to German speaking neighbours in Austria and Switzerland. Because of the relative population sizes, Germany can afford to buy rights for the entire German speaking region. With smaller populations, it is uneconomical for Austria and Switzerland to purchase rights for the whole German speaking region, so they encrypt their satellite channels. The same situation applies because of the relative population size of Ireland compared to that of the UK.

If you check the RTÉ Player, very few programmes on the main channels are available for viewing in the UK, with mainly news and locally produced content being available. Similarly, the RTÉ News Now channel can be watched by viewers in the UK. Mainly of interest to Irish ex-pat.s but because of the size of Ireland, much of the news is similar to what we would see on the local news, so not of great interest to the UK as a whole.

So I can't see the RTÉ TV channels coming any time soon.

As for Radio, their Radio 1 channel was available on long wave to the whole of the British Isles, to serve Irish people living in the UK, which is probably why Telewest carried that channel. Although I can see the logic in this channel being made available to all VM customers, there's no real reason to bring the other music channels to the network. That said, all broadcast analogue and digital radio channels from RTÉ are available to UK listeners online, without restriction. So radio is a grey area, there's no real reason why the channels shouldn't appear but probably not very much demand for them. It's also possible that RTÉ may wish to switch the channel from RTÉ Radio One to RTÉ Choice at some point.

I wish they wouldn't do this to be honest, I find these temporary rebrands annoying. I wonder how much it actually costs them to have these name changes registered on their Ofcom licences.

BBC Red Button stream placeholders on channels 992 and 993 have now been added.

A promo loop is now showing on the Red Button HD stream on Freeview, so I would imagine this will soon start on VM channel 994.

VM carry
875 RTE1
876 RTE2
877 TG4

Certain programming gets blacked out (e.g. CL footie, ROI internationals etc).

Freeview HD boxes can pick up raw transmissions of these plus TV3, RTE2HD etc in much of NI as well as the restricted broadcasts that VM have.

WTF? There are plenty of people who don't give a toss about football. Why should people miss shows on ITV 4 for example because there is boring bunch of over paid primadonnas trying to cheat another bunch of overpaid primadonnas? Why should fans of Corrie (and other primetime shows) miss out on their programs because a bigger bunch of talentless, in it for the money "footballers" are forcing themselves to play for "free" in England internationals.
The cricketing broadcasting day starts at 10 and ends at 8 normally anyway. What else could a non-cricket fan hope to see? Re-runs of The Premiership Years? Perhaps some rugby highlights, but I doubt the other home nations would care to watch re-runs of England rugby games.
There are many fans of Cricket in the home nations who will be glad of this. I think it is great of Sky to do this.
Why should Cricket fans suffer, when for most of the year football is shoved in peoples faces? Not everyone who has sports likes football either. Tennis, golf, snooker, pool, darts, rugby are all niche sports too, and many people will gladly watch all these sports, but turn off the football. Would there be the same issues if Sky continually dedicated a channel to tournaments on these sports? (I.e. 4 days of pure golf, followed by x number days of pure tennis, followed 2 weeks of pure Rubgy etc.)
How is Skys fault if your brother downsizes his Sky sports package. Why doesn't your brother just drop Sky Sports for two months, what sport will he actually miss?
Your posts are usually excellent Chad, but I feel you are well of the mark here:(

I don't see the point in renaming. It's a gimmick.
Skyfall is coming to sky movies on July 1st so expect another bout of 007 channel around that time.
It doesn't bother me though, just dont see the point.
As for the lions tour. I swear only sky care. Nobody else seems to. Even rugby fans

Yes, the first scheduled programmes being tennis. I was, however, referring to the promo loop which isn't shown on the EPG, just indicating that it had already started on Freeview at that time.

No, the events being covered in the summer's Red Button schedule aren't as significant as the Olympics and don't justify suspending the BBC Parliament service on Freeview. Freeview will have one additional SD Red Button stream, the BBC have taken temporary capacity on the COM5 / Arqiva A multiplex for this, so it won't be available to viewers with Freeview lite. There isn't room on Freeview for a third SD Red Button stream. More details are available on the BBC Blog.

The EPG data for the Red Button channels is wrong, it says athletics is on RB1 and RBHD, however it is Antiques Roadshow and the HD Trailer instead,

Also the antiques roadshow thing is like a quiz with Red,Green,Yellow and Blue commands, but they don't work on tivo, making it rather pointless

Do you have any idea what package those channels will be on MB please? Aunt has M+ and watches Food Network on Freeview (think it is that channel anyway, if not one similarly named) so will be pleased if it is on M+.
