The real change is behind the scenes; the new code allowing HTML 5 apps. So the real benefit of the update will be seen in the coming months.

I was just about to say that. I always set my recordings to keep until I delete, but because that's not a default option a few that I hit quickly to record had the timer. These were listed in 'going away soon'. When I changed them to 'keep till I delete' the going away soon category disappeared. I like that actually. I think it keeps it tidier

Anyone else use pairing between the TiVo YouTube app and the Android app?

While the problem in the old version with the TiVo advertising a different device name before and after you connected has been resolved, the TiVo app now seems to regularly stop responding to the Android app after playing the first video, giving timeouts on any play attempts.

The only problem I've had since the update with YouTube is that after the 3rd or 4th video I lose sound on YouTube and TV channels after exiting the app. I have to reboot Tivo

Don't like it at all.

All 3 of mine are painfully slow since the update. Pressing play in My Shows gives a black screen for 5 or 6 seconds, used to be a second or two.
And button presses don't register right away anymore.

Den I have to agree , our Tivo is slowing down at times it feels like it needs winding up. My Three year old Panasonic freeview box is lightening fast in comparison.:(

I am keeping a close eye on this thread, but I'm not aware of anything specific. If you could provide timings (or, better still, put an unlisted video on YouTube and PM me a link) that would help. Also let me know if it speeds up after a reboot.

The servers may be a factor sometimes (especially in the VOD menus), but most user interactions don't use a server.

I'd like to think the new software was written to work well with the current hardware.

The VM TiVo must be around 4 or 5 years old by now, could this be a factor? Is the software too advanced for the hardware?

This speed issue does need to be sorted if they want to stay ahead of the game, we have seen the Sky HD box catch up with functionality this year (recently deleted folder & set once series links)

Please could we have a new thread for the TIVO problems many people are experiencing?

If others think this is not necessary then so be it...just a suggestion :)

IT SHOULD NOT be a thread where we comment on each others posts APART FROM if Spider or Ben etc need more info and they can always PM that person.

Given that everyone has now had the update, won't this thread naturally resort to the posts being about questions and problems anyway and therefore there is no need for a new thread?

Fair point. I just didn't want Spider having to trawl through numerous 'chatting' posts for him to get to the important points.

Tivo always has been slow for me, a reboot does help temporarily. Thinking about putting a timer on the plug so it reboots every night.

There's too many junk apps/gimmicks on there which few use. I could happily live without the thumbs up/down - never use it. It should concentrate all it's resources on the epg and being responsive to channel changes - this is what its needed for most of the time.

My TiVo is so slow today it's unbelievable. Took over a minute to change a channel earlier. I'd be interested in Spiderplant's opinion as to whether the BIB in Mr K's post is as good an idea as it seems - or are there likely to be unforseen consquences?

There is a lot of anecdotal evidence, both here and on DS, that the initial speed gains found by most immediately after the update have disappeared and in some cases got worse. Certainly when I first received the update it was rapid, but it's slowed down to the point of almost ignoring me today. Is that something that's been noticed? Is it a case of having to let everything settle, or is it not as big an issue as the forums suggest?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Pressing 'Home' leaves me with a black screen for 3/4 seconds befor an unpopulated Home screen appears. If I then choose an option I again get a black screen delay before an unpopulated screen appears. Not much of a delay at each stage but enough when added togather to be irritating.

The same thing happens if I go direct to 'My Shows' though there is very little delay in either case once I actually choose a recorded program from those shown.

Have only noticed the occasional slowdown myself on both of our boxes. Two pointers that may make a difference, one being that the green street cabinet is just over the road from our house and the second that both boxes are set to sleep in the energy saving menu.

This is exactly what I am experiencing on my TiVo since the update. Apart from the general slowdown it makes using Netflix a real pain. I'm considering cancelling - not because of the Netflix content, merely because of the difficulty of access.

Well something weird happened here.

I think when the TiVo update went through it may have been a bit messy resolution wise. The text was quite thin and the purple wasn't as "plum" as pictured. Yesterday I turned the TiVo on and it was as the preview pictures and the Font was much clearer.

I checked the resolution settings and indeed it was on 1080i (I hadn't changed it) so am I dreaming or did it really change on it's own?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Well with the price rise and the fact I could probably draw the menus on the screen faster than my Tivo, seriously considering dropping the TV for a Freeview box. Sorry virgin, but you have balked the Tivo box.

Last night it took over 30 seconds to start playing something in My Shows, I get the feeling it is checking everything against a server before doing anything.

I see a lot of the 'purple' ring on screen daily, though I rarely saw the 'red' ring.

Having a NowTV box and a Chromecast to use similar features/apps really does show how bad Tivo is at doing good the same thing.

Bit the bullet yesterday afternoon - went out to the garage, dusted off the old Sky+HD and scrambled about in the dust behind the AV unit (will clean when the light nights come :)) and reconnected everything. Still worked, so I rang Sky and asked to be put on the Family Pack @ £33pm. OK says Sam, for an extra £5pm I can give you Movies & Sport all in HD, 12 month deal - thanks very much. Now looking forward to next July when I can call VM and say thanks, but no thanks.

Not just the slowness of the Tivo which caused this but it was the last straw. The other problems are not particularly Tivo related but EPG, lack of 5.1 On Demand and even lack of HD On Demand, none of which are problems with Sky. Happy to give specifics if required but I am aware this isn't the forum for those issues.

LG Bluray 30 seconds (new Netflix UI)

WD TV 35 seconds (old Netflix UI)

I'm not finding the Tivo slow since the update on standard menus, but I don't use it as much as I used to these days, in case that would make a difference?

Youview box (Humax) 1 min 10 secs

Playstation 4 19 seconds

Roku 3 25 seconds.

Yup tried it on the PS4 today too, loaded Netflix in around 20 secs.

Now this may be just a coincidence but over the last few weeks I have noticed the colours looking all washed out. And no it's not the TV, I've used the built in tuner and the colours are more crisper.
Anyone else had this problem?

I checked the resolution settings and indeed it was on 1080i (I hadn't changed it) so am I dreaming or did it really change on it's own?

You're not dreaming. This is been reported occasionally ever since TiVo launched, but we've only just found out why it happens. Each time the TiVo reboots it checks the TV is compatible with the current resolution. But if the TV is turned off (as is usually the case when the software is updated) the check may not work properly, so the TiVo switches to a lower resolution.

Thanks all for the performance reports. Keep them coming.

Last night it took over 30 seconds to start playing something in My Shows, I get the feeling it is checking everything against a server before doing anything.

seeing similar sorts of things, the worst and most irritating is the sound drop out going from tv guide back to viewing tv

after what 5 years? and its basically still a bug riddled slow mess of an operation.

ridiculous.

So it's £38 for all TV?, apart from BT Sport?

Bit hard to turn that down. I need to stop being a loyal customer and flit between the two, you just get shafted otherwise.

I got the update 2 weeks ago and ever since the update the TV picture has been bad even in HD.

to me they have gone backwards with the update and made Tivo worse.

I'm glad somebody else has said this. I watched a couple of things yesterday and was thinking the same. That said I watched something on Universal the otther day and it was excellent.

Yes, surprised me a bit too - already have Sky Sports on VM (and BT, MUTV) but not movies. Deal didn't include BT Sport but we can't be too greedy eh? I switch about every 18 months and usually get 6 months free something or other so the effort is worth it. I wasn't intending to switch at this point but just lost my rag over how slow everything was plus the other problems I had. Those problems may be peculiar to me but I don't want workarounds - if I'm paying £100+ per month I expect it to work properly.

Check the Video Output Format setting is still correct. The setting changed on some TiVos when the update happened.

Is it me but this TIVo update has made my PVR less responsive for example there is now a few seconds delay to load my shows page, also a odd issue of no picture only sound on a channel on the odd occasions switching between channels using the last ch button with your TV connected by HDMI?

Yes, I get this too. I suspect we're not the only ones. The update promised much but - so far at least - has delivered little.

Its the same for a lot of people looking at the posts on here. I have exactly the same experience as you my shows sometimes takes 10 seconds to populate and at other times 4/5 seconds.

I decided to reboot the TiVo last night things were getting rediculious speed wise. So far things are a lot quicker, I will see how things go.

I also rebooted last night, although only because I had to turn the power off for another reason, and yes, a noticeable difference.

Did one this morning as it was frozen on one channel and would not change at all. Quicker now, but then it wasn't that slow before hand.

Im also having these problems with this update. My shows takes ages to populate and keep getting purple buffering circle and as others have said a reboot seems to help a bit but it doesn't last.

I also have another issue since the update. I use TiVo to TiVo streaming for the Sky channels and prior to this update never had an issue, but now everything stutters and buffers. The boxes are connected via homeplugs and using speedtest.net im getting around 60mb through them as I always have done. Also PS3 connected through works fine.

Anybody else using MRS?

I'm new with Tivo, had it yesterday, I have a few basic questions hoping the experts here can help me out

When I press the right hand arrow, apart from the channel that I'm on showing, nothing else happens, how do set scroll through the channels?

If I want to watch a particular programme at a set timed, how do I set it to change channel?

Each time I press a key on the remote, it makes a noise, how do I turn it off?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

On your last question go to help and settings then Audio and then sound effects volume and turn off.

You set a Reminder. Because of the way Tivo works (it was designed as a PVR) it will record the show as well. This is why, in many peoples' view, reminders are pointless; you may as well set a recording. But the reminder system will do what you want; just remember to delete the recording at the end of the show.

Currently, I'm watch UK Gold, the down arrow on the remote doesn't show me what's on say at 8:00pm

Press OK, then up/down to move through the channels, left/right to move through the times. Or press the "guide" button to go to the full-screen guide.

Sounds like you have more than two homeplugs. Some people report that two will work reliably, but not more. As a test, unplug all except the ones on the TiVos.

I use MRS, but connected with Ethernet.

ps. Welcome to the forum!

Re: General TiVo Discussion (Full Tivo !)

Ok my box is 27% full .

Set to record Body of Proof ( which I was going to cancel as I have seen it anyway) that is another point set to new only & its not flagged as new

The Tivo says it wont record as I do not have enough room !!
this program needs 72% of disk space really did anyone test the upgrade.
It should be scrapped until it works correctly.

Think it also takes into account recordings scheduled for the future.

jobbie8 30-11-2014 21:05

When loading apps I get the purple ring every time, Spotify used to load up right away, My Nick Jr, Tiddlers and BBC red button all slow at loading since the update.

Grrrrr.....

OK, does I always have to select "Record and remind this programme" if I just want to watch the programmes?
