Nonsense, it was 50 years ago, it bears no resemblence to the modern game.:)

I am old enough to have seen Spurs and a few others at the time on TV, a very good side but the standards of fitness and the condition of the pitches and equipment made it a million miles away from 'modern' football.

Apple is interested in joining the billion pound battle to win the next round of bidding for Premier League TV rights, as part of plans to boost its Apple TV service.

Charles Sale over at The Daily Mail claims that the US company will enter the fray when the rights come up for tender before the end of the current season
Quote:

Apple - the most valuable technology firm in the world - is said to view Premier League football as the ideal type of premium content to draw UK users to the Apple TV service, utilising the iTunes subscriptions infrastructure already in operation.

Sale also believes that Google will be interested in the rights for its Google TV service, which is due to launch in the UK and Europe this year.

Apple is widely rumoured to be developing new branded internet-connected television sets for launch this year, as part of the firm's "assault on the living room".

The company has so far taken a tentative approach to the TV market, with Apple TV selling only around 2m units since March 2010, compared with the more-than-40m iPads shifted by Apple.

But the TV market is now hotting up, and the likes of Google and Apple see long-term revenue-generating opportunities in connecting consumers with large libraries of pay-TV content.

Sale feels that the involvement of the US giants in the Premier League TV bidding could create a competitive market at a time when other TV sports are in decline.

Sky, which paid £1.6 billion for its current TV rights deal, will definitely be in the running again for the rights, while the Disney-owned ESPN - which picked up packages after the collapse of Setanta UK in 2009 - has already signalled that it will be involved.

Sale also feels that Middle East network Al Jezeera may have the resources and the interest to break Rupert Murdoch's stranglehold over Premier League TV rights.

The Football Association had to accept a 30% drop in the price of its two-year FA Cup and England games deal renewal with ITV last year.

But the Premier League has been a very effective negotiator at getting a good price for its TV rights, and the next auction is expected to be equally lucrative.

With in excess of $70 billion in cash reserves, Apple certainly has the funds to rival Murdoch for the Premier League, but it seems hard to believe that Sky would allow one of its crown jewels to be taken by a new rival.

However, it could be that the League could instead look to create special packages of on-demand highlights for Google and Apple to be made available on their platforms

This doesn't make any sense. It's out of character for Apple and they would need to do all the production. Apple isn't a broadcasting company.

Yes but why would they bother? Apple have been characterised by their restrained approach into what markets to enter. They are very selective and careful with the release of new products. Go look at their website, look at the entire range of products they offer, this is one of the richest companies in the world and their range is dwarfed by that of it's competitors.

So why would Apple enter sports broadcasting in the UK? Why would it want to go into Sky's market?

It's not going to happen in the form being reported.

Well we shall see what happens but remember even a company of Apple's size are possibly looking to diversify into other areas as we have already seen by the likes of Google and Facebook and remember Sky's market is a hugely profitable market and also remember that News Corp wanted a bigger slice of this market before the scandal knocked that on the head.

It's not a giving that a company of whatever size wants to diversify into other areas. Apple have already passed up opportunities to do so. Apple retain a great deal of focus on their primary markets and have always been reluctant to enter new markets. Facebook have also shown little desire to move into different markets.

This isn't only outside of their primary market, it's completely outside the scope of the company. It's putting them into an entirely new realm, that of broadcasting. Not only that but it would only be doing so for one country.

It's simply an absurd rumour.

Virgin Money has today announced it has agreed to become shirt sponsor of Newcastle United Football Club in a two-year deal. This follows a long standing relationship between Northern Rock and Newcastle United. Virgin Money completed the acquisition of Northern Rock plc on 1 January 2012.

The club will unveil the new strip this evening with Newcastle United taking on Manchester United in the Premier League. The Virgin Money logo will be used on team shirts for the remainder of the 2011-12 season under the current sponsorship arrangements.

Jayne-Anne Gadhia, Chief Executive at Virgin Money said: "Now that Virgin Money and Northern Rock are united as one business, it gives us great pleasure to continue the shirt sponsorship of Newcastle United Football Club. The Northern Rock sponsorship started in 2003 and it is an important link to the North-East which we are pleased to continue.

"Combined with our sponsorship of the Virgin London Marathon and the Edinburgh Festival ‘Fringe on the high street’, the shirt sponsorship of Newcastle United Football Club embeds our involvement in the communities we serve.

“The first 10,000 supporters with 2011/12 season shirts that bring them to the Club shop will receive a free Virgin Money update to their shirt. Availability of this new branding will be posted on the club website but is expected at the end of the week."

Newcastle United Managing Director Derek Llambias said: "We're delighted to secure this new deal with Virgin Money and we look forward to enjoying a mutually beneficial partnership over the coming seasons. It is an excellent deal for both parties and we're very happy to have them on board."

Mark Lawrenson believes that the loss of the injured Nemanja Vidic has forced Manchester United to rely too heavily on the ageing Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand, 33, has played 13 of United's 20 league games this season.

He and Phil Jones were given a torrid time by Demba Ba and Shola Ameobi in Wednesday's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle.

"Rio is coming slowly towards the end of his career. But the biggest problem is that Vidic is not playing," Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

"He is the rock and I do not believe, if he had been playing at Newcastle, Demba Ba would have been so spectacular. Newcastle's strikers terrorised Jones and Ferdinand.

Because there is no-one else available, he is having to play every match. It is a simple fact that he is much nearer to the end of his career than the start.

"I am not saying for one second he is finished because, as you get older and your pace goes, you get wiser. The problem at Manchester United is that you are playing against some players who are seriously rapid.

"The difficulty United have with Rio is getting him fit and keeping him fit and you do take longer to recover as you get older."

"But the one player United did not want to get a long-term injury was Vidic.

"You cannot underestimate the difference it makes to United, or the difference it would make to any side, to be without a player like Vidic. It was a massive blow.

"To be fair, the problems were not just in defence on Wednesday. It was a very impotent Manchester United we saw at Newcastle and a very poor performance."

Yes Kompany has been superb for them this season but if there is a worry with Man City it is how much title experience have they got if the title race becomes very tight as Man Utd have been there many times before and know what is needed to win it.

I agree it wasn't so much we won that title but no one else wanted to win it and threw it away.

This season there are teams who have stepped up to the level we used to be at a few years ago.

Last night we had Giggs give the ball away for more than 90% of his passes and Park doing nothing all match.

We may have a world class striker in Rooney and when he plays Vidic is world class but we still lack someone who is world class in midfield. I'd argue in some games we don't even have anyone in midfield with the dross we put out

Like Liverpool have ever given a flying 'fudge' about the abuse their supporters aim at United players.

Exactly and l am a Liverpool supporter but abuse and chants in whichever form it takes is inacceptable and l have always feel very embarassed when l hear it.

I'm not so sure about that. In football you expect abuse to a degree. When Owen plays, Liverpool fans boo him when he's on the ball - and I totally respect that, he's one of their former strikers playing for their biggest rival. In fact I'd be more puzzled if Liverpool fans didn't boo him.

Unless the abuse is racial then I can't see what Liverpool are worried about.

Well l just hope we have a good match when they play each other and everything passes off peacefully.

The issue isn't the booing....it is all the rest. Some things that football fans say..all under the guise of rivalry...is disgusting at the best of times.

You make it sound like they are similar to a night at the panto..booing and calls of "he is behind you".

I enjoy the game..but some football fans should be barred for life for their comments and actions (racial or not).

Ps, castration is still a better option..stop the breeeding at source :D

These players from where l am looking had a year left on their contract last summer but they are free to talk to clubs l believe at the start of the year in order to agree a potential free transfer by the end of their contract but also the club could also sell the player before his contract runs out for a mutually agreeable fee which will have obviously decreased in value the more they enter into the last year of their contract.

Weird story developing on Rooney.

Independent front page reporting that Rooney is going. Then denied by Manchester United. Don't know if the Independent will still press ahead with the story.

Not really. The Independent wouldn't go with it as a lead unless they had a good source, someone is playing games somewhere.

If it was a good source more than one newspaper or website would have heard it. I would be very suprised if theres any truth in the story.

There doesn't have to be truth to the story but the Independent thought it was true, and sourced well enough to make the front page. This isn't the Daily Star we're talking about. So someone high enough to either one of the figures involved would have 'leaked' it to the journalist and the independent. The speculation is that the club is sending a message to Rooney.

plenty of clubs and players have denied things and then moved a few days later so the denials can be taken with a pinch of salt.

After what Rooney said before he renewed his contract about the lowering of standards and how we have played last season and this I can understand if he wanted to leave

and how he played, maybe the club are questioning his wages and commitment after last season's tiff.
