No list update this week as I only know one bit of news this week - BBC to keep BBC Asian Network on air.

I hope to have an list update posts back next Sunday.

http://virgintvmediaboy.blogspot.com...air-after.html

NOTE: UK summer time starts at 2am on Saturday Night.

Unfortunately, the BBC Asian Network is staying, albeit with a 50% funding cut.

I was hoping it would go and the money saved could be used elsewhere. It serves the Asian community very badly and I think if the BBC is to create channels for minority/disadvantaged groups, it should do it for them all or not at all. eg where is the disabled or gay channel and Womens Hour isn't even on for an hour lol.

The clocks go forward don't they??

I do wonder wheather the take up of the V+ box, which I believe was initilly a low percentage, is because of PVR functionality or HD?

I want HD, but I know a lot of people who couldn't care less about HD.

Then there are those people, who think because they have n HD TV, they aready have HD; there's a lot of those around! :)

I got my V+ a couple of years ago for PVR functionality especially as there was only a part time BBC HD channel back then. I personally think it is a PVR first and a HD receiver second. As much as I like HD, the PVR function is more important to me.

For what it's worth, I think VM have called it a HD activation charge to stop people ringing up complaining that Mr. X next door pays the same monthly XLTV fee as me but gets more channels so I want a price reduction

it may well just be a HD flagging mistake. it makes no sense to show qualifying in HD and not the race, anyway VM have nearly a week to correct it if it is a mistake. in the mean time email the BBC to find if you are really wanting to know.

But they will show the race on HD highlight on BBC HD, which don't make sense at all.

it makes sense if its a HD flagging mistake as it means that VM have forgot to flag the race as a HD broadcast it does happen from time to time especially on Eurosport HD.

im pretty sure if the Qualifying and highlights are in HD the race will also be in HD especially as the feed the BBC have from the FOM is HD now.

Unfortunately we won't be able to launch our UK channel this month, but as you can see we are ready to go with our programmes, we're just finding the best home for the UK channel. We'll keep you up to date with all of the latest channel news right here, so you'll be the first to know whenever we have something to announce

So what do they mean by "best home" then? They can't be deciding which channel to put the progs on because it IS a channel, so it sounds to me they are looking at which provider to put it on.

Hopefully it is just a flagging mistake.

The Sky EPG didn't flag the Cheltenham Festival as native on C4 HD but it certainly was, even the morning line shows were too. The BBC F1 Trailers also say HD on them.

We'll see.

Possibly means that they're wanting to launch on a load of platforms at once and negotiations with one of them are going slower than planned

If they’re not showing on the main channel, all you need to do is press the red button on your remote control, and Bob’s your uncle, you can scroll through all the games and select your side. It’ll work for all 2011-2012 Barclays Premier League matches, plus any UEFA Champions League match, ATP tennis, US Open, Heineken Cup and more. Plus, your clever red button unlocks loads of news and stats, too. And an extra bonus, from late spring you can use it to track down smaller sports events, games or highlights, too. Just keep an eye out for the red button appearing on your Sky Sports premium channels. Nice one!

Mmmmm.... Is this a precursor to SKY catch-up / on demand finally arriving on the XL package?

I remember people hinting that a 2 tier on demand service was in the works with the new XL on demand / catch-up offering SKY content.

I hope you're right, Chad. And let's hope that the Sky catchup has some decent material on it and is not full of reality programmes.

All I've heard is that CBeebies and ITV3 are still pulling in more viewing figures than SKY Atlantic each week :p:

Seriously though many of the programmes I may have watched are now 6 or 7 episodes deep. The channel coming at this stage is no good to me unless Virgin offer the missing episodes on catch up.

There's a few rumours flying about for ages that new arrivals are to be expected in April. Maybe the Red Button facility, SKY on demand, SKY catch up, SKY Arts HD and SKY Atlantic will all launch on Virgin around Easter time.

Do you have to remind me about CBeebies as as me and my partner have got a new baby due in 2 months and have had 4 years since watching it:D:D

OK been recovering a bit so now had chance to speak with my sources

Ok.... virgin are planning on more HD channels and will probally catch up with sky for a while.... no i dnt know the names but i rough idea but i aint going to speculate

Ok... the other news inst to do with virign, it to do with sky, sky are mostly likely have about 75ish HD channels probably less by end of the year beginning of 2012

the reason for this is due to satellite capacity now coming less but this is going to change when within the next 3 or 4 years we will be getting new satellites launched for the UK and the capacity will allow for a vast amount of HD channels to launch probably including regional BBC HD

Astra 1N launches Q2 of this year and will temporarily be located at the Sky/Freesat orbital slot until a permanent satellite replaces it . Astra 1N will replace some existing capacity but will also provide significant additional transponders including more UK spotbeams which will benefit both Freesat and Sky.

If all goes well and to schedule it will be online before 2012, probably autumn time.

Sky has plenty of existing capacity it could use to launch new encrypted channels, it is targetted UK spotbeams that allow certain content to be broadcast FTA that are threadbare at the moment.

CBS have been given licences by OFCOM for their HD channels.

However CBS don't appear to require UK spotbeams to broadcast FTA as they don't use them now. It's only the likes of the Networks that need those UK beams to broadcast FTA due to their content. The increased capacity would allow other FTA channels with more expensive content to launch though.

Right thanks for that , I've got to admit I'm not really well up on satellite.

Basically if it's premium content (like UCL on ITV) or expensive imports, films and the likes to be able to broadcast FTA on satellite they currentlly need to use Astra 2D transponders which have a tight UK footprint.

BBC 1, 2 and it's regions are all on Astra 2D and virtually all ITV regions are too. Astra 2D is pretty full so some ITV regions are broadcast encrypted on other satellites in the orbital slot.

The new satellite will provide additional UK spotbeams for FTA 'expensive' content like we see Channel 4 and 5 HD, it affects mostly sports and imports.

Encrypted pay content isn't affected, there is plenty of existing capacity for these channels. And the likes of CBS that broadcast less lucrative content don't require UK spotbeams and can happily broadcast FTA even on a wide spotbeam.

On the subject of coming soon to VM has anyone heard anything on the grapevine? Surely something is on it's way with the recent test appearances.

i know that why i said sky will porbally have about 75ish chanels by the end of the year but the capaicty is limited btu sitll some free

the new satilelte all due to be full operational for 2015 will more than triple the capcaicty and majority of the transpodners wil be dvbs2 and sky will try encourage broadcaster to use mpeg4, but i think sky are goign to rty get push and get people to use the newer boxes in some way so there will all work on dvbs2 by 2020

If you ignored someone then wouldn't it get confusing? People having conversations where you can only see some of the comments, useless!

Personally I don't think people need to be "constructive and balanced" (not saying your not), it'a a public forum after all, as long as people aren't trolling then it's all good with me. ;)

Couldn't agree more , I'm a customer of Sky , VM and have free view and all have pros and cons , it would be a boring life if we all thought the same. If VM need praise I will give it , if theyve peeved me I'll also tell you LOL:D

And yes the ignore list makes it pretty hard hence why I don't use it and have no need to use it.

Seems VM picked content better than Sky as I believe Bravo first picked this up before the sale of the VM channels better figures than Sky Atlantic opening night I think

But of course Sky 1 is available on most pay platforms in the UK though.

Atlantic is actually achieving a higher weekly reach than FX which is far more widely distributed. It dosen't have much that interests me but I find it fascinating that so many VM customers pick up on the ratings. As it isn't available on VM and isn't likely to be anytime soon then personally I would be more interested what other new channels VM will be providing for my increased subscription costs which of course kick in soon.

If it does launch on VM I bet the detractors will then claim it will be the best channel since sliced bread and VM done a wonderful deal getting it!

Given the title of this thread I would personally be asking my own provider what they are planning to launch.
