Re: Snow !

I do feel very sorry for those who got caught out on the roads but everyone should have known the snow was coming and at least been carrying some emergency kit like warm clothes, snacks, drinks etc. to see them through a good few hours if the worst happened. I've been hearing the usual complaints from a few motorists about the lack of assistance but the emergency services have been citing access problems due to blocked roads, abandoned vehicles, obstructed hard shoulders etc. As usual, others have reported crazy driving, speeding etc. by those who just won't slow down for anyone or anything. Madness! The truth is there are always going to be major problems on our roads when weather like this strikes and the best way to mitigate its effects is for drivers to use some common sense and avoid non-essential journeys and/or causing obstructions wherever possible.

The neighbours where out this morning clearing all paths and a route up the hill but put the snow in front of some cars including mine so I spent an hour clearing my car of snow 6", and a bit in front so I can get my car out and reverse up the hill.

Better now than 7am tomorrow morning.

It's because most people don't have a clue how to drive in the snow. So they wheel spin, and turn it to ice. Then the roads turn into a death trap.

This morning was ok, because there was very little traffic on the road. So the snow had time to melt rather than being packed down hard.

I gave myself an hour and a half to get to work this morning, but it only took half an hour, including a stop at the garage.

I kind of enjoy driving in the snow and once had to drive back from Ammanford South Wales to Liverpool on the A483 during blizzard, if you know the road then you will know that it is a fantastic road up the backbone of Wales.

Grit doesn't really start to work until it gets ground into the snow by the traffic

You will generally find in the last 10 to 20 years that British winters have been generally mild so if the cold weather develops to those low tempertures then there are likely to be considerable transportation problems as usual and the country will highly likely come to a standstill as we are not very good with coping with severe spells of weather.

IIRC the snow wasn't forecast to be anywhere south of Ben Lomond last night, but I wasn't really paying attention to the map south of here. I'm not sure there's anywhere high enough where you're going to have caught any. Also, it comes and goes very quickly at this time of year.

I go up that way pretty regularly and the scenery is outstanding. It almost makes up for the A9 being a deathtrap and appalling joke of a road.

That i can imagine ,late last night early this morning it wasn't too bad ,a few artics but not much else i imagine day time being completely different and up in the tops by Aviemore i noticed that delineators have been installed so you must get some snow up there

I ignore reports like this, every year its going to be the "hottest" summer, or the "coldest" winter. Rarely is it either.

DocDutch 17-11-2012 23:09

Re: Snow !

hottest 1 I normally ignore as well as we live in the UK and the chances seeing a blue sky in the summer are normally pretty slim ( I mean over the weekends as during the week it has been known to be scorching and come friday afternoon the rainclouds come in)

Well, clearly hell has already frozen over. They have a sensible reply from someone who appears to know what they are talking about in the comments section. That reply being the one from the UKMO where they say they can't acccurately predict the weather that far ahead (it's debabatable how accurate the close range forcasts are as well).

The school bus has failed to reach us for the second morning running - yesterday because of fresh snow, this morning because the rapid melt yesterday became a rapid re-freeze last night and the council don't grit the last 3 miles to our house.

Naturally the children aren't remotely upset by this. They made a snowman instead. :D

Where did this white stuff come from. It never featured in any forecast I saw or heard. Rain yes, but snow in Surrey was not part of the game plan. That was all supposed to stay well north of here.

Reminds me of the forecast we had down here of light scattered snow showers once and we ened up with a blizzard for most of the day.:)

During the BBC weather report around midnight there was an off the cuff remark that there might possibly be some minor snow showers in the south east but the majority were likely to be in the Midlands.

Apparently there's a cold blast from Russia coming over the next few days so heads up to anyone concerned about elderly/infirm relatives and friends in the impending cold snap, instead of spending money on grit for icy paths etc, (unused!) cat litter does exactly the same job and is a hell of a lot cheaper and you normally get much more in a bag too. Even the supermarket's cheap 'value' brands do the job.

---------- Post added at 08:56 ---------- Previous post was at 08:49 ----------

Example - Grit from Asda (£2.49 for 2kg)

Smartprice Cat Litter (£1.58 for 10lt)

good call for small areas but you can get 25 kg bags of rock salt for between £10 and 15 quid :)

That does work out cheaper but 25kg may be a little heavy for some elderly people...

Re: Snow !

We buy a few 25kg bags from either Wicks or B & Q depending on where is cheapest and split them up between our neighbours. Us 'younger' ones do our own drives and paths plus the areas around our 'older' and less able neighbours homes. It only cost us a few quid each and keeps everyone safe. The lot we have now we bought a couple of years ago after the last big freeze depleted our stock and I'm hoping we won't have too much cause to use it this year.

Wikes are selling it at £4.99 (25kg) at the moment.

Fingers crossed that though it may get colder we should escape the freezing snow. Our area of the Cheshire/Lancashire Plain tends to escape a lot of the harsher weather conditions as we are protected, to some extent, by the surrounding higher ground when the prevailing weather comes from the north and east. Our main weather influence is from the north and west and that is the reason we have our reputation of being Wet Manchester. :D
