I'm in the Manchester area.

Is it because of the proxy problems (transparent proxy) that I am getting slow speeds from servers in China?

IRC won't be affected by proxy issues on port 80.

ringing up is a royal pain thats why a lot of people dont bother, I DID ring them but just got told there is no problem, simple because 1 file downloaded ok, speaks of arrogance.

What about if ntl know there is a fault but noone has rang up do they deliberatly wait for the complaints to take action?

There must be monitoring software do they monitor and look for abnormalities things like sudden drop in traffic?

NTL are so stubborn on this if they turn of these proxies it will save so much hassle, turn them off send a email to customers explaining how to manually use a proxy then the customer has the choice.

well... 22 pages of moans plus countless more on other threads...
i've never had a day's trouble with the speed/availability/etc of ntl 150k BB in 6 months... except for the day of installation when the ntl man forgot to patch my pc for the blaster virus and so the inevitable happened (i think it was about 3 minutes after plugging the ethernet cable in before my pc turned itself off (i hadnt even worked through the installation CD....)
but i've found the customer service to be brilliant, (although i suppose it depends on who you get put through to)

it just gets a tad bit frustrating reading the same bile vomited up on these forums every day... :afire:

some of you should be put onto BT's 1gig a month cap broadband and see how much you whine about that!

well perhaps i'll turn bitter and resentful too once my connection goes crap... :D

Erm ... it's not ntl's responsibility to patch your PC. It's yours, as it is your property.

And what was he doing on it anyway? Isn't there some kind of rule preventing ntl staff from going on customer's PC's?

you can pay for a managed install, where an engineer will setup your computer for BB and register as well. I am not sure this is available in all regions, but i have heard the price is normally about £50, but some franchises have offered it for free in the past.

my fault there... i was meant to say leave a patch on a floppy for us to install
but yes, at the time they were meant to give these patches out but he forgot.

yeah that's true... it was £25 here in the north west (i think...) so i decided to do it myself (i mean 25 quid for a guy to put a cd in the cd drive... no thanks)
But obviously that backfired and i wasnt able to use BB (or my pc for longer than 60 seconds) for about 5 days... in the end i got so tired of waiting for the patch ntl customer services said would be here in 2 days (it arrived in 2 weeks) that i just got a mate to get the fix and patch for me

I agree with hawkseye000, I have been with NTL for years and had only one really bad problem. CS were really good and I had a network engineer spend several evenings at my house with meters etc. and he located the problem down to an unauthorised user, which once dealt with cleared up my problems. Last night I was informed that users within my postcode area had access problems when I phoned CS and it was being dealt with, so that saved a long wait on the phone. I unfortunately can not try ADSL as BT refuse to upgrade my local exchange so I can't compare, however my mates who have ADSL seem to have more problems than I do.

Not saying that NTL is perfect, as some sites (yahoo profiles) dont seem to be accessible, but I can't complain as I would say that I seem to have a good 95% up-time.
