Arthur please remember severals things and first of all horses who run in the Grand National are checked by the vets and thoroughly looked after at their stables and get the finest care and treatment one could imagine.

While it is very sad that there has been two fatalities in the race horses can break down on the gallops at home and please also remember the GN in the last few years has been made a lot safer and many fences has been modified to make it safer for the horses and while the two deaths are very sad there is a risk in every sport as we have seen by the Fabrice Muamba collapse and the death of a footballer in Italy today and although we can make things as safe as we can we are never going to eliminate the risk totally be it sportsmen or horses.

Both the fatalities today suffered fractured limbs.

Why are racehorses put down when they break a leg when you see cats, dogs and other animals with plastercasts on?

Is it something to do with the slenderness of their limbs compared to the mass of their bodies? Their skittishness & inability to be immobilised?

You have summed it up quite well Cobby and although some injuries can be mended it really depends on one where the injury is and the second factor is how serious a injury is as well but rest assured the finest treatment is given to racehorses and everything is done to save them or if the injury is so serious they are put down very humanely.

Well, it isn't working Eleven fatalities in the last 10 years, eight since 2006, and four in the last two editions. 2010 is the only year without fatalities since 2006.

Horses can break down at lesser meetings and on the gallops and these are not mentioned at all by the media because its not headline news but because its the Grand National the media will put it as front page headlines thus fuelling the clamour to change the race even more then it has been done already or even some are even calling for the scrapping of the race and although it is very sad to lose horses there will always be a risk in jump racing and this can never ever be got rid of unless the sports is stopped and do we really want this and the answer to that would be a resounding no by the vast majority of the public.

John Smith's Grand National (Grade 3) 4m4f, 7yo+

I can just imagine the olympics putting down two athletes due to the race being dangerous.. About time we put an end to this barbaric so called sport.. Any sport that puts an animal in danger shouldn't be allowed.

There are a whole host of dangers in sport and dangerous sports. From the well known risks in sports like Rugby, Formula 1 Racing, Boxing, Football, Skiing and more dangerous pursuits like rock climbing and hang gliding and Horse Racing is in that lists of dangerous sports and so should those sports be banned as well because of the dangers involved.

Thoroughbred horses are born to race and they absolutely love racing and when l have visited some stables in the past these horses cannot wait to get to the races and run in their next race.

Comparisons like those don't wash Den ,sports men and women assess the risk and make a conscious decision to take it or not ,a horse has no such choice ,i am certain that the horses would much sooner be running around a field chewing grass than being forced to gallop a 2 mile course with a rider on it's back and virtually insurmountable obstacles in the way ....if it had a choice
