I had asked virgin about a letter I received regards a fixed price 2 year deal on offer, it says upgrade or renew. But sadly the information ain’t correct. Virgin don’t know anything about it but said it sounds like a new customer deal only from sales

Although always sceptical of anything customer services tell me about what may be coming in the future, I think this one has a ring of truth about it.

I'm not so sure about Sky Sports UHD, though, at least for the first couple of years. If we did get that for the coming season, I think it will be at a high price.

What a resounding success the old telly tablet was as one suspects at £299 as one suspects they had to bring in extra stock after they sold out like hotcakes.;)

Hey guys, MB,

I've been away for a few days, any news on those 4/5 DNPs? Sorry if it's already been posted or nothing has changed.

Interesting news regarding the BT Sports 4K channel. Would be great if there was some truth in that

Would make sense if they want more viewers etc I can't imagine too many BT customers watch it given the minimum internet speed needed is around 45Mbps my area is one of those that has infinity but only up to 40Mbps

BT sport uhd is not coming to vm until 2019 at the very earliest.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

Virgin Media Channel 106 (BBC Three) EPG is now saying "Red Button will be taken off on 14th August"

Will BBC Three be axe from Virgin UK Channel 106?

If so will that mean that Local TV will move from Virgin UK Channel 159 to Virgin UK Channel 106?

Will that mean:

-FOX HD moves from Virgin UK Channel 199 to Virgin UK Channel 159?

And we feel:

-Dave Ja Vu may move from Virgin Channel 211 to Virgin Channel 191.
-W HD may move from Virgin Channel 191 to Virgin Channel 194.
-Dave HD may move from Virgin Channel 194 to Virgin Channel 199.

More if we get it but something is set to happen on August 14th.

Yes, a bit of joined up thinking required on BT's part, I think!

Is your view based on the expiry date of the existing contract, theone? Are you sure there is not a re-negotiation going on? I would have thought that VM would be looking at getting as much UHD as possible following reports in the media and on review sites criticising the lack of UHD content on the platform.

VM can look but right now they can't have neither SKY nor BT want to make their UHD available anywhere else.
However.... keep a eye on Discovery networks and in particular Eurosport.

No news yet on what going to happen with that Freeview HD slot.

a516digital did report last week that Quest +2 was set to launch on August 2nd on Freeview HD box/TV Sets.

Also the name of "Quest2" did appear on the Ofcom web site late last week but was removed today (August 7th).

I would imagine UHD will be mainly on demand rather than on conventional broadcast channels initially and you may not get a lot of notice about content.

Freesat maybe, Freeview no. With the bandwidth required & the amount of spectrum about to be lost to 5G rollout HD is likely to be the limit for DTT.

Yes, maybe JJ20X will be able to see on a scan.

Wasn't Hum Masala testing some time ago before being removed?

Looks like VM Ireland are aiming for channel parity with the UK.

Are there still any channels that they have that we don't?

Assuming I get to see the scan data, which isn't guaranteed. Scan data is generally available at the start of the month and mid-month. Exact timings in the summer months are unpredictable, working around when the people doing the scans take their holidays.

FreeSports got the regulatory green light with licences from Ofcom covering terrestrial, cable and satellite distribution. It also received a Freeview slot and is currently assigned channel 95.

Yeah, yeah, but it's pretty pointless knowing that without at least having an idea of what it is.

I mean, is it a new channel, a new app or a price increase?

Without at least having a clue, it's pretty useless to simply know there's a DNP. Don't you think?

Not if it's the start of a light rumour we got told that NBC are wanting to launch NBCSports in the uk, maybe vm doing this deal is vms way of sweetening NBC up so they get a better deal on nbcsports if it does launch in uk.

There is a lot more on it than football, olympics, f1, motor racing, baseball, basketball, athletics, tour de france, motorcross to name a few.

I think that is Mad Max's point - minority sports -Yanks like to invent sports only they really play, then call their national championships 'the World Championship/Series'

Minority sports with minority viewing figures - hardly a recipe for raking in the bucks

Don't think this will affect many here but VM are set to increase their late payment fee to £12 (this from a new source).
I'm wondering if they're confused with the none direct debit fee?

I don't think VM is allowed to increase its non-direct debit fee as companies were found to be over-charging for this and regulations were introduced in 2012. http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php...-fees-45p.html

The evidence for the argument that streaming and OTT services will become the norm is out there and will soon become overwhelming. It will be interesting to see how long the diehards on this forum hold out with their belief that nothing will change.

As for Brexit, I respect the views of the remainers with all the concerns that they have, but I and many others like me can see how exiting can be made to work in favour of the UK.

It has certainly been enlightning to discover how long people do hold on to their views about things even when mounting evidence proves them wrong, and the streaming debate is a case in point. That pivotal moment for remainers in the Brexit debate will not arrive until we have much more detail on the negotiations which clearly show the implications.

The World Series was named after the newspaper that sponsored it, not the world as in planet Earth.

And "minority" sports that garner some of the largest viewing figures outside of the US? :erm: Mmkay

Unlike Premiership football, which presumably is why Amazon and others are looking at making bids next time around.

But you have no basis for that belief, Den. I have been posting links to evidence that this is happening, but where are yours to contradict me?

I can understand a response that you'll 'believe it when you see it', but to reject the prospect with nothing to support the view is not really very convincing.

Hyperoptic do it in uk 1gbs down 1gbs up i think it costs £40p/m includes line rental.
For me personally my 38mbs package works perfectly for my needs, the pic i posted was meant to be a tongue in cheek picture.

1Gb/s is available in parts of London for £50pm including line rental. I should have had the option of it two years ago but the company is rolling it out at a snail's pace!

Turns out that it was the parent company (Liberty Global) that put the block on Amazon being added to VM STB's.

Also, Disney is to take their content off Netflix and set up their own streaming service.

That is quite steep also i nearly forgot hyperoptic is still very limited and only in a few areas.
One firm i'm keeping a eye on is Relish the London and a few other areas at moment but are aiming to go natonwide broadband using 4g or 5g network.
Uno are another to keep a eye on i've heard they are planning a roll out of 300mbs to rival bt but their set up charges are steep at moment.

Tbf Disneys own streaming service (yes OB it's in uk before you say i'm going to hell for streaming content from other countries :p: ) is only £4.99p/m.

LGI (Liberty Global International) is suffering from Kodak's problem. Kodak invented the digital camera in 1977 but didn't release it as it felt it would lose out on the printing and developing market which Kodak made a great income from. As a result, the Japanese came along and released digital cameras. Without good digital cameras in place, Kodak went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

What will happen now is people will just use their smart TVs, Rokus and Amazon fires and then forget Tivo and cut the cord.

I can see both sides of the argument but overall, I think LGI is thinking too short term.

Agreed. LG's stance on this beggars belief. At this rate, VM will always be the poor relation to Sky.

As I've said on many occasions, I want just one index of all the shows I am watching.

At the moment, I have the one list that provides my recordings and bookmarked programmes on demand and on Netflix.

It is a nuisance to have to go to different systems to access the material being followed there. It would be good to be able to bookmark Amazon stuff as well so all the various series I am following can be accessed immediately.

As the number of streaming services grows, this will become increasingly important, particularly where some programmes get taken off again after a while. Now TV is particularly bad for this.

muppetman11 14-08-2017 09:02

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

But where I struggle with this is the fact you keep telling us how bad the pay TV channels are , so that poses the question why bother paying ? Why not just use Amazon and Netflix with a Freeview/Freesat recorder. At least that way your not forced to pay to watch channels you have no interest in.

There is still stuff I want to watch on the pay tv broadcast channels - my point has been that the number of good shows on there seem to be diminishing. This last year was very poor, and yes, if it continues like this, I will not be getting a replacement for my V6 box when its time is up.

In my opinion, if Virgin want to keep their existing customers, let alone increase subscriptions, they need to do better. OTT services are the future, and VM would do well to embrace them, rather than treat them as if they were a threat.

However, if Liberty Global is going to be a millstone over their heads, preventing VM from taking the right decisions, it does not bode well, I'm afraid.
