The TV channels were neglected for a while by VM but that is no longer the case.

What they do need to sort out are the essentials of:
- Network coverage: in hand
- New box: in hand
- 4G mobile: unknown
- wifi network via Superhub: status unknown, launched in some LGI countries

Then desirables would be:
- Remaining HD channels
- Amazon Prime
- Price freeze
- 4k carriage announcements

I have something to say but I'm gonna keep my mouth shut for now as nobody else has mentioned it on here....

Incorrect| As I stated previously, the only way a channel can appear on Freeview is to negotiate a contract with one of the multiplex operators, generally Arqiva (for COM5-COM8) or to a lesser extent SDN, which is limited in that it only operates a single multiplex (COM4). There is no freedom of entry to Freeview, in your terms, Arqiva and SDN are the "gatekeepers" for their respective multiplexes and channels have to negotiate with one of these multiplex operators. The PSB multiplexes are totally closed platforms and don't make space available to independent broadcasters.

I think we just have different opinions of the definition of an open platform.

Thanks for an interesting debate. :)

Ok but that wasn't really an opinion either just an observation based on the difference between VM obtaining Universal HD and BT obtaining Universal HD PLUS E! HD. You did suggest ways in which VM might be seen as proactive, mentioning UKTV on-demand content. We would disagree here I'm afraid. For a long period of time VM didn't carry UKTV's on-demand content, now it is grabbing any content it can get after falling behind other providers. Again, more reactive than proactive, they could have obtained UKTV content at a much earlier stage.

Quote:

I think we just have different opinions of the definition of an open platform.
Traditionally a closed platform operator exclusively sells its service to the end user and with an open platform, individual broadcasters can sell their content direct to the end user. Freeview doesn't sit well with either model, neither the platform operators nor the broadcasters are selling directly to the end user. The concept is better suited to pay-tv than to FTA services. When DTT carried broadcast pay-tv services it was either via OnDigital/ITV Digital or via TopUp TV, both of which were closed platforms.

As far as FTA services go, with Sky the broadcaster can arrange an independent upload to Astra and then simply pay Sky for an EPG slot. With Freeview, the broadcaster has to arrange a carriage contract with a multiplex operator, it can't independently load its service onto DTT. The Freeview scenario is closer to that of cable, where the broadcaster has to arrange a carriage contract with VM, than to the Sky/Astra situation.

Everything i have been reading i agree 100% with. Virgin claim they are serious about mobile then why have they not got 4G? They claim they want to offer the best on demand content yet they were miles ahead of Sky in that respect a few years ago, now look at the gap. They hugely disrespect their customers by giving the loyal customers price increases to fund better discounts for new subscribers. Don't get me started on the TIVO or the fact that 7 months after release they still have not got support for the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Edge with its Android app. Smaller 1 man operations can get this sorted so why can't a huge company like this? I sent them a tweet asking about it and all i got was we are working on it. Im sorry that is not good enough when my bill has gone up 40% in 2 years.

When i phoned to cancel, they did nothing to even try and persuade me to stay and i have had no contact since. They are quite happy to ring me every few weeks trying to sell me Sky Sports, or a mobile that i have told them many times im under contract elsewhere and would not take a Virgin mobile as they do not offer 4G.

They've got it in Ireland. There were rumours that VM were holding off from a deal because it made them less attractive to a tie-up with Vodafone, then there were rumours of a deal with Three (whom VM uses in Ireland), then there were rumours that the EE deal had another year to run and VM didn't want to renew with EE because EE was promoting BT Sport.
Who knows the real situation? I think 4G is VM's biggest weakness. But saying that, Sky has still not launched its mobile service, so credit where it's due.

Yes, I think Media Boy mentioned this in connection with the Channel 5-Viacom set-up. He suggested that Channel 5's offerings including Spike were negotiated by VM whilst the Viacom channels were negotiated by LGI. That makes sense so I guess there's still some pan-European deals to be conducted with A+E and Viacom to mop up the remaining channels.

Unless Den know more (@Den PM Us if you cant post online) we have no timescales - it took Virgin Media UK to SIX years to get the same channel lineup in all areas of Virgin Media UK.

http://mediaboyblog.blogspot.co.uk/2...-channels.html

And Virgin Media only rebrand UPC Ireland as Virgin Media Ireland in October 2015 - so we may not get the missing channels until 2021.

Since October 2015 RT (Russia Today) has been added to Virgin Media Ireland.

Looks like they failed to sign up for Blaze, which starts on the 20th.

Freeview & Sky only thus far. It's currently testing FTA, so if this remains the case, Freesat viewers will have access to it too.

Let be fair to Virgin Media here the last deal with A+E Networks who own Blaze was sign with Liberty Global in November 2015 and Blaze was just confirmed in May 2016.

Up until last night we did think it was an new name for HISTORY.

Also if A+E Networks wanted Blaze on Virgin Media UK so bad they can ask Virgin to axe HISTORY +1 to make way for it to launch.

... it's a combination of H2, History and CI with shows from all three channels. Which begs the question, why bother with pay tv when so much is on Freeview now?

Ancient Aliens coming soon to Freeview via Blaze, very good stuff!

oh and on a different note, the BBC has confirmed that John Malone's Liberty Media, sister company to Liberty Global, is buying F1.

Didn't someone at Liberty/VM say not so long ago, that they wern't interested in owning premium content, especially sport?....

Does anyone think with rising prices particularly with VM that one day we will only pay for what we watch for example I don't watch or have any interest in the music channels or foreign channels but I have to pay for them in the package.

Gradually I'm being priced out and there comes a point when enough is enough it's only the broadband speed that's holding me in right now.

Gradually I'm being priced out and there comes a point when enough is enough it's only the broadband speed that's holding me in right now.

I think the music and world channels pay VM so you're not paying for them. TV packages work on the basis that package viewers don't watch everything. That's why VM pays relatively little per viewer for BT Sport.

Liberty Global Media will buy F1.

Could this be to LG/VM's advantage to be used as a bargaining tool against Sky and BT..or possible VM to have their own F1 channel instead of Sky.

These things take time I know, but could work out to be a very good move....price rise to follow of course lol

No such company!
A separate company, Liberty Media is acquiring F1.
Liberty Global International is not.
I hope that once the exclusive Sky deal expires in the UK (it runs from 2019 to 2024 so after the current Ch4 and Sky deal) then Liberty Media may take a longer term approach and may favour a FTA/Pay TV scenario.

They are a business and as such they'll look for who offers them the best terms both in money and coverage. Many others sports offer standalone digital packages over the Internet so you could well see that.

Agreed. 2024 is eight years away and that's when Sky's exclusive deal with Formula 1, commencing in 2019, finishes.
As well as LGI connections to Liberty Media, it's important to note that the new chairman of F1 (Chase Carey) is also vice chairman of 21st Centuryy Fox which has Sky connections via its 39% stake and James Murdoch's chairmanship of Sky; he's the CEO of 21st Century Fox.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Anyone who thinks that F1 will suddenly strike a favourable deal with VM should remember:
- Liberty Media has bought F1, not Liberty Global International which owns VM.
- The current Channel 4/Sky deal runs to 2019 after which there is a Sky exclusive deal to 2024.
- In 2024, John Malone who has stakes in both Liberty companies will be 83. He will probably have stepped down from his companies which will probably make them even more independent than they are...so expect no favouritism to VM from F1 by the time that Sky's rights end!

As of last week it was testing with EPG but with no broadcasting video.

We think Fox News will be on Virgin UK Channel 626 when launched.

We can confirmed it will say Fox News Channel on the banner.

They were probably lying to put their competitors off the scent, but it does show how sly LG actually are.

Is this F1 deal the news that was said to be breaking in a day or two?

I agree, it's getting more and more pointless subscribing to pay TV channels in the traditional way.

If I use the price rise to rid myself of the awful TiVo, VM won't refund the advance line rental that I paid. Another sly trick that has done them no favours with me in the long term.

I'm going to downgrade, as I believe that the price increase allows me to do this without giving 30 days notice.

I think VM said that they're not interested in buying sports content in the UK market as it's too competitive a marketplace. LGI does have a sports channel in the Netherlands.

Other sister Liberty companies have always had long-term involvement in sport. Discovery's Eurosport for example. And Liberty Media owns the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball team too.

The TV channels were neglected for a while by VM but that is no longer the case.

What they do need to sort out are the essentials of:
- Network coverage: in hand
- New box: in hand
- 4G mobile: unknown
- wifi network via Superhub: status unknown, launched in some LGI countries

Then desirables would be:
- Remaining HD channels
- Amazon Prime
- Price freeze
- 4k carriage announcements

Looks like one of these is being sorted next month. 4G.
Thanks to Inactive Digital for posting this.

The problem with choosing precisely which channels you will pay for (rather than buying packages of channels) is that this is your personal choice. In some households, there is a selfish breadwinner who may choose only those specific channels that he or she wants to watch and the tastes of the rest of the family are ignored.

I think we will ultimately dispense with all these individual channels and progress to fewer providers, each showing much more content. The present arrangements are inefficient, and expensive for the consumer.

Well, Richard, if that's what you think about Liberty Global, good luck to you when you transfer to Sky.

I don't agree with you that the Tivo is awful, it is just slow (it wasn't always thus). The fact that only a proportion of people are having the sort of problems that you and certain other contributors describe indicates to me that this is more to do with network problems in their areas than the Tivo itself.

I am waiting for the new Tivo to arrive before making a decision about what to do. However, I am fortunate in being able to subscribe to Now TV, Netflix and Amazon and so I do have sufficient overall choice to keep me happy.

Having said this, I am disappointed to hear that the user interface on the new Tivos may be the same as on our updated old Tivos. I was hoping for better than this, so my expectations have declined. I may yet decide to move on, but I hope not to have to make that decision. Cable has so much to offer, but the possibilities just haven't been realised. I really do hope that changes so that VM becomes the TV platform of choice.

VM are effectively forcing me to stay until next March.

I dislike Sky with a passion and would only use them for a one year contract if it worked out cheaper than paying someone to replace my satellite wiring.

In the end Freeview/Freesat would suffice, maybe topped up with some streaming content.

I agree, cable TV & TiVo haven't been utilised and could have been so much better.

I'm going to downgrade to M/Player instead as there's no point in recording material if attempts to watch it cause so much frustration.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Have just come off the phone with Virgin Media's complaints department and the guy told me he'd just had info come down saying Virgin were looking to move to more of a Sky based TV package system of bundles of specific genre of channels rather than across the board packages (ie Kids pack, Entertain Pack etc).

He said he had 'not had chance to really look at it yet' so what he was telling me might have been a little off but strange they are looking at this so soon after launching these new bundles, unless the packs will be launched for the new box?

Take it with a pinch of salt but thought I'd mention it :)

BenMcr 09-09-2016 14:42

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

It's always possible that new content and channels may be more aligned with the pack names than when they were called M - XL.

But personally I'm not currently aware of any information to say that Virgin Media are specifically doing that, or will be.

Well, I'm all for that, and maybe I am being unfair. The reputation Fox News has acquired is that of a dumbed down comedy news channel.

I've never seen the live channel but I have seen excerpts - maybe they weren't representative.

Don't forget that changing your package usually starts a new minimum term, so you'd likely be locked in until at least next September.

On what basis do you think that, dodo?

Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

Yes it wshful think on my mind
With the relaunched of5Star +1 andPOP
And new channels like Spike,Tru TV,Movies 4 Men,Movie Mix.
what do you think about plus 1 channels

I think broadcasting companies like Sky,Sony,Vicaom ,Etc.should include the Plus one as a bonus channel if you get the main channel.example We get Sky 1 but not Sky 1 + 1 for no charge

Add that lot, & all the V+HD boxes will end up with a 3 day EPG instead of 5. No way will VM add that amount of channels until all the legacy boxes (of which there are still around 1/2 million out there) are replaced.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

All I want is a better on demand/catch up service! One that has all programs in hd and adds programs within hours of the live channel broadcast. At the moment there's little hd and you often have to wait days and sometimes weeks before programs are added.
