In my own view launching an local TV Channel in London was an bad idea as over 50% of the UK wide broadcasters come from London.

Yes, I totally agree with you on both these points.

I think London is far more transient, it has a younger population and more ethnic diversity (eg 500,000 French) than any other city in the UK. Appealing to this type of diverse audience is very hard.
To illustrate the difference, when England exited the World Cup, viewing in pubs declined nationally in England except London, due to the internationalisation of the city.

What I also feel is that the whole success or failure of local TV cannot be judged by one TV station in London. London Live's low viewing figures could be due to one or all of:
i) Local TV does not work in London or anywhere else in the UK.
ii) Local TV does not work in London due to London's unique characteristics.
iii) Local TV does not work in London due to the wrong decisions taken by London Live in terms of programming.

Local TV, jesus H! Do we not have enough friggin TV channels as it is? Most of which are utter brain numbing dross, talk about saturation! People need to get up off their arses and get out more, ok it's different for people who are housebound with illness or whatever, but for the majority of people, do we really need all these TV channels?

We've got too many TV channels, so the obvious solution is to watch less TV.

No-one is forcing you to watch them !

Personally, I have all channels, bar movies and sports (as I'm a tight sod), and although we dont watch much, I like the choice.

Having said that< watched the "this is Brighton" the other day, and the whole thing reminded me of schoolboy video, so I'll probably not watch that again

Actually, now I think about it, it can't be truTV as this is already broadcasting on VM off the EPG. I assume that the system counts all services, whether on or off the EPG, so it wouldn't make a difference. This must mean that something new has been added, possibly a hidden TV/radio channel.

I remember VOX, I liked the name and always thought that it would make a good name for a bar. It's latin for 'voice'. RTL1, RTL2, RTL5, Sat 1, Premier, Pro Sieben, EinsPlus, Phoenix are some I remember. The Mexican channel Galavision used to show bullfighting on Sunday afternoons

You can't with a standard VM box, a TV with a cable tuner or an unofficial cable box would be needed.

Connecting such unauthorised equipment to the network, however, is against VM terms and conditions.

Some people also say that this could introduce noise into the system; thus degrading the TV picture for neighbouring houses.

Not seen/heard anything about the ITVBE EPG slot.

Apparently, the delay in 5*+1 returning to VM is due to Viacom wanting to put it on channel 152. Research shows that +1 channels do much better if placed next to the main channel.

If Channel 5+24 closes, this won't be a problem. Viacom are going to have to decide what they are going to do with channel 5+24, or accept that either it or 5*+1 are going to be placed away from the rest of the channel portfolio.

I suspect (but don't know for sure) that this could be the extra stream that MB picked up so that things are ready to roll if/when Viacom and VM come to an agreement.

Still not confirmed yet but I am working with ITV Be launching on Channel 119, Channel 179 or Channel 205.

Or we may even see the following:

115. ITV2
116. ITVBe
117. ITV3
118. ITV4
174. ITV2 HD
175. ITV3 HD
176. ITV4 HD
177. ITV2 +1
178. ITV3 +1
179 or 205. ITV4 +1

Or ITV may just ask Virgin Media to reuse ITV4 +1 EPG Slot for ITV Be.

Hmmm, maybe this is an indication that ITVBe is testing on VM?? Perhaps ITVBe will eventually take over the former local channel EPG slot for Belfast, what was it on before 159 (so we can keep an eye on it).

My guess is that the extra stream that MB noticed is one of the following:

- The BBC2 audio stream needs to be in place for 3 October.

- The ITVBe stream needs to be in place for 8 October.

- The 5*+1 stream, as yet, has an unknown start date.

I haven't included truTV, as this won't affect the total amount of services (since it is already broadcasting off the EPG).

Some people said that they wanted SA so badly that they would be prepared to pay a little extra on top of their subscription for it.

In a way this is what some have done by subscribing to Now TV on top of their VM subscription in order to get SA, I believe that the other channels on Now TV are included in the basic VM package anyway.

Thanks, so some people not on L or XL may benefit a little more if they have children or want ITV Encore before it comes to VM.

Talking of ITV Encore, ITV Encore +1 will be closing on 7/10/14 at 6pm on Sky. It is widely speculated that this slot will be re-used to launch ITVBe on the platform.

At this moment in time, it looks like there won't be a +1 or HD variant for ITVBe on Sky, so I am assuming that this will be the same for VM. It's believed that these are "coming soon" :D

I think you're making the mistake of using a thread in this forum as a complete guide to what's on Virgin. There is some excellent stuff on at the moment.

we live in a rotten world where ofcomn allow the tv providers to run rough shot and charge whatever they want and withhold services. its a disgrace to be honest.

Sky and VM are two of them:td:

While I sympathise, you are aware of what you're saying, right?

Outside of the PSB's, no services are legally mandated to be available to everyone. if a Content host or provider wants to keep a channel or programming to themselves, it is their right to do so. If people voted with their wallets, the likes of Sky and VM would not be able to afford to charge "whatever they liked" which in reality, is mere market prices.

BT Sport has been a disrupter, as is Netflix etc and the upcoming WWE Network too. People should be able to pay for the content they want, but that requires Ofcom to tackle the supply side, and encourage the likes of the EPL to create products for consumers to watch content directly. That way people can pay for what they want, and not packages like Sky Sports where much of the content is of no interest.

You cannot blame Sky/VM/BT for wanting to protect what they've paid for, however you can certainly ask why the content producers don't offer consumers direct solutions. The tech is there, they should be using it.

Yes, they have the legal right, but that doesn't make it acceptable. The law should be changed so that one company cannot monopolise all the best shows.

I am surprised that the law is so intrusive these days and yet fails to deal with the issues that really annoy so many people.

It was due to Michael Jackson buying the rights to all that Beatles material that their works have been denied us on TV for all these years. Just one person can achieve this. Clearly wrong.

So long as there is competition in the market, this will not happen. In fact as we have seen competition for the content has driven prices UP not down at the supply side, and the market appetite for the content has not been diminished either. There is not a media monopoly in this country, and so long as there isn't, Ofcom should not interfere with the business of content procurement and distribution.

As for buying the rights to a single act/content source and doing what they want with it, I have to disagree that it is "clearly wrong". You should not, and can not force an owner of any good to share it, sell it, or do anything they don't want with it. You may not like that fact, but such is life.

As consumers the best thing we can do is show the demand for it and make it an offer they cannot refuse. Asking for legislation to control market forces is completely absurd.

i'm not blaming them i'm just saying it shouldnt be the case. TV should be regarded as a public service. There should be a body with powers to stop spiteful withholding of channels.

There should also be bodies to stop the uncontrolled abuse of sport subscription channels.

I would love it if Sky, BT and VM would reduce prices to make it easy for consumers to choos what to have.

Fot example, l was stopped by a Sky rep in Hounslow. And he asked me if l was interested in going to Sky.

I told hime with a smile that l was with Sky, for a very long time. But VM gave me a deal, which l took.

He said that he could equal that deal. But l said that within my deal l get Phone, BB and TV for a certain price.

He said 'you might as well stay with VM. Howabout that.

We needed cheaper services.

Regarding the Beatles music publishing, Michael Jackson lost control of it way back in 1995 when he merged Northern Songs (owners of the rights to the Beatles' songs) into Sony ATV Music Publishing in return for a 50% stake in the combined company plus $59m. His stake was reduced to just 25% in 2006.

I'm not sure what is meant by the songs being denied us on TV all these years. They've featured in adverts (Help and Revolution) and "A Hard Day's Night" was on TV this year. The recent ITV drama doc "Cilla" featured tracks written by The Beatles too.

I respect your opinion, but the precedent has already been set that you can legislate to restrict these rights. For example, there are certain sports which must be made available across all platforms. Sky was forced to play ball in respect of their exclusive rights to films and were told to charge a given level of wholesale price. Microsoft was told it couldn't have its software added to computers and that it should be purchased as a separate package to let other suppliers in.

Competition should work in favour of the consumer and at the same time ensure that the supplier was still able to make a fair profit from it. It is the Government's responsibility to ensure that the balance is right.

I don't mind them withholding channels as long as they don't withhold material that is shown on those channels. Exclusive deals should be banned in my view, unless they are for a short period of time (say two years) after they have been released. After that time, they should be made available to other media outlets at the market rate.

Just as a foot note on the Jacko thing it was the other way around, at the time Macca tried in vain to re-buy the rights to the Beatles songs so they wouldn't be cheapened by being used in TV adverts, but Jacko outbid him igniting a feud which lasted till the "bad" singer died.

I'm not sure about this. On the one hand when HD becomes the norm (perhaps when SD channels no longer exist), they may not be able to justify continuation of the HD charge.

On the other hand, the BBC introduced a higher TV licence for receiving programmes in colour in the 1960's to fund the extra costs of production and this remains to this day.

Absolutely. As I stated above, maybe when HD is the norm and the cost of HD equipment falls, we might see a change- but I won't be holding my breathe.

Never saw that coming! Not heard anything about this either, I wonder if this is permanent or just a promotion?

It says that the channel is on M and above, can someone check if it is actually now Free To Air or not. This can be done by tuning to the channel and pulling your viewing card out of the box (I can't do it as I'm away from home ready for a funeral tomorrow).

Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't a lot of the shows that are going to be on ITVBe been shown previously on the likes of ITV 2-4 and in HD ?

Seems a step backwards for fans of those shows now the new channel is only SD , ITV seem to have more channels than they need in my opinion.

ITV2's commercial breaks are fully booked and its advertisers are crying out for more of the same. Hence the creation of ITV Be. Never forget that you don't pay for ITV directly, it's the advertisers who do. He who pays the piper calls the tune!

With Virgin Media given Channel 119 to ITV it look to me as we will not see that well known channel from Sky on Virgin Media anytime soon.

Will Virgin Media move Local TV Channels to Channel 120? Or are Virgin keeping it free for ITV Encore?

And Sky viewers have lost ITV Encore +1.

It'll be for ITV Encore, I believe. We should be getting that in late 2015.

It may very well be advertising but launching without a HD variant is stupid in my opinion.

As for +1 channels personally I won't miss that , why would I use +1 when the show is available on catchup and in HD

If you already had three recordings being made at that time, the +1 facility is very useful.

Catch up is useful, but it's easy to miss stuff on there, which is deleted after a week.

It really depends how you watch TV. I appreciate that +1s aren't your bag, but I wouldn't be without them.

+1's aren't HD so basically I never use them , the majority of Sky's catch up is in HD and available for 30 days.

It will be 30 days for us soon, too. However, I still think it's easy to lose track of where you are when you are relying on that for a series.

If only it could keep track of where you are - like Netflix does. It just picks up where you left off when you select your programme.

I agree that it is annoying that the +1 channels are all in standard definition.

Fortunately TIVO is very good at finding the HD repeats when there are clashes so that isn't really an issue anymore. I can't say I've really used them since my V+ went. I really hate watching SD nowadays!

I agree, rarely use +1 channels :)

We do as sometimes there are too many things on at the same time thus clashes occur.

It is a pity Tivo does not automatically make use of +1 channels when there is a clash

The latest US update to TiVo allows you to set up a series link to do exactly that and schedule over all channels. Personally, I think that will potentially cause more problems than answers.

This new function is not part of the 'plum' upgrade to Virgin Media TiVo.

Don't wishlists already achieve this?
