Re: Coming soon to Virgin TV 2014

Actually a thought occurs. Am i right in saying that BT are still pursuing the other Sky Sports channels through the regulator, or has that been resolved?

I suspected that UPC were able to get certain Sky channels unavailable on Virgin because it allowed Sky to make it to the regulator that they were open for business but Virgin were the problem, without really affecting their main operation.

I'm now wondering if Virgin are going to benefit from a similar set of circumstances with Sky now seeing BT as the main competition and agreeing deals with Virgin to make it look to the regulator as if they're open for business but BT are the issue.

The picture quality is not exactly HD, but seen worse and get worse on VM on certain channels.

The on demand picture is better than the live channels if you can wait until after the air date.

The only sports channels with a must-wholesale obligation on them are Sky Sports 1 & 2. The must-wholesale obligation covers BT Vision but not BT YouView. BT is awaiting the regulator's ruling that the must-wholesale obligation will be extended to BT YouView.
There is nothing to indicate the must-wholesale obligation will be extended to any other Sky Sports channels.

Broadcast: Sundance Channel set for UK

The global arm of AMC Networks is readying plans to launch the Sundance Channel in the UK.

Broadcast understands that AMC/Sundance Channel Global is in carriage negotiations with pay-TV platforms including Sky, with a view to launching in 2015.

The plans follow parent firm AMC Networks’ $1bn (£600m) acquisition of Chellomedia, which operates around 40 channels around the world, last year.

Its channels include AMC, which aired Breaking Bad in the US, female-skewing WEtv and comedy network IFC. It has been keen to establish a presence in the UK for some time and a number of sources have told Broadcast that it has now selected the Sundance Channel as its first launch.

Rumour: Virgin Media may launch 20+ new channels by 2015.

Base on information I have seen from a number of sources over the past week I can confirmed that Virgin Media may launch over 20 new channels by end of this year.

I am not going to post the names of the channels I have seen but:

-The Channel names on theone2k10 list is also on information I have seen.
-Up to TEN new HD Channels may launch.
-Some channels will only be on Virgin Media.

It could just be something simple such as my source forgot to put Skysports FHD on the list they gave me. I won't see them now until Friday/Saturday but i'll ask them if that was the case.

I do not have an real number as one of the channels on my list say 'Local TV'.

Sky insiders say that Sky cant make their mind up on if to close Sky Arts 2 down or not.

No real confirmed information on Sky Livingit channels closing.

I can imagine that Sky will defer this until a decision has been made about the transfer of BBC Three to VOD. If this does go ahead and results in lower costs without losing too much audience share, I'm sure that Sky and other broadcasters will certainly be considering a similar move for some of their own channels.

A new Irish TV station, Irish TV, starts on 1 May 2014. Not sure if VM will carry this only in Ireland, nationwide or not at all!

No word on Irish TV being on Virgin Media.

I can never understand why these types of channels are not on VM. Such as we have many viewers ie Irish, Scottish and Welsh for example in the London area, but these channels are not on the system.

I can get any channel which is on Sky, as l have freesat.

That was my understanding. I thought I saw something in recent days which suggested that BT are closing down Vision this year to concentrate on YouView, but I can't seem to find it now.

I have to say if you ever try to sign up to telly on the BT website it is a bit silly that they have two boxes on offer side by side and have to explain that you can only get certain things on one and not the other.

BT will be ending support for the silver BT Vision boxes - which offer no pay channels - at the end of June - so these will not work after that date. The black Vision boxes will continue to be supported but not sold to new customers, making things a little less confusing!

Will be interesting to see what happens next. I don't think Desmond's a joint-venture type of person (he ended his newspaper print joint venture with the Telegraph with much wrangling) otherwise I would think that would be a good way to develop the Channel and grow its value.

Re: Coming soon to Virgin TV 2014

Price Drop and Bid TV in administration 229 employees made redundant

Will Wright and Allan Graham from KPMG’s Restructuring practice were today appointed joint administrators to sit-up Limited, the digital broadcaster behind Price Drop and Bid TV. The company’s two television channels, which broadcasted to more than 12 million homes with over 300 hours of live demonstrations each week, will cease transmission later today, and the company’s online shop will close as the business ceases to trade with immediate effect.

Unfortunately, a total of 229 employees, all of whom are based in London, have been made redundant as a result of the administration. Will Wright, partner at KPMG and joint administrator, said: “It is really disappointing, given the hard efforts of the company and the support of the majority of its creditors, that a satisfactory conclusion to the restructuring could not be reached.

Despite the recent approval of a Company Voluntary Arrangement agreement with creditors, a significant and unexpected fall in sales over the course of the last month meant that the company was simply unable to continue to trade. “The small number of affected customers who have purchased items from sit-up Limited within the last few days are advised to refer to the company website, which will be updated with more information in the coming days.”"

Bit more from retail week

TV shopping channel Sit-Up, which operates Price Drop and Bid TV, has collapsed into administration jusy a month after it secured a CVA.

KPMG has been appointed administrator to the company today. It will cease to trade with immediate effect, making 229 redundancies.

KPMG said it collapsed after “a significant and unexpected” fall in sales over the last month.

KPMG joint administrator and partner Will Wright said: “It is really disappointing, given the hard efforts of the company and the support of the majority of its creditors, that a satisfactory conclusion to the restructuring could not be reached. Despite the recent approval of a Company Voluntary Arrangement agreement with creditors, a significant and unexpected fall in sales over the course of the last month meant that the company was simply unable to continue to trade.

“The small number of affected customers who have purchased items from sit-up limited within the last few days are advised to refer to the company website, which will be updated with more information in the coming days.”

Entrepreneurs Paul and Val Wright, the couple who launched Ideal Shopping, had hoped to rescue Sit-up by investing £6m when the CVA was passed on March 18.

KPMG was originally called in to run the CVA and had asked creditors that were owed money to accept 9p to 30p in the pound.

Some time ago I was told that VM were "mindful to pull" the channels from the EPG. Whilst this wasn't actually said, I got the impression that they hadn't paid their fees to VM (not sure if I posted it on here or not).

From what I can gather from various sources, it appears that it did indeed go off air due to a power cut- a deliberate one from their electricity supplier for continued non payment of an outstanding bill. AFAIK the slates being shown are being generated from a back up server and automatically kick in in the event of an unplanned outage.

In the case of VM, I would expect them to be removed very soon and replaced by a VM "channel no longer available" slate. I hope Spiderplant hasn't already gone away for easter :D

What sound is coming from Bid TV on Freeview? Does it sound like a recording, or has nobody told the presenter to stop trying to sell :D

Media Boy, was Universal Channel one of the HD channels on your list? That would be a welcome additional as it is long overdue.

Most of UPC Ireland's channels are meant to come to VM at some stage according to Media Boy. These are:
HD
History, National Geographic Wild, CI, Sky News, Sky Sports News, Disney.
SD
Fashion TV.

To these we can add from other postings:
HD
Sky Sports 3,4,F1,
SD
Sky 1+1

That leaves another nine channels unaccounted for. Maybe five local TV, and four others.

In the past 34 hours I have revealed:

A) I do not have an real number as one of the channels on my list say 'Local TV'.
B) Some of the channels on my list broadcast in UPC Ireland and Smallworld areas right now.

Subject to VM agreement, any shopping channel can go onto VM as long as the appropriate fees are paid.

I think that any that thought it financially viable are already on the system, so don't think it will make any difference.

If they are still showing that static caption, they will run into problems with Sky. After a defined period of time, in order to maintain the integrity of the EPG, any channel not producing sound and moving pictures will be removed from the EPG.

I expect Sky to be on the ball with this one as there will be a need for SD EPG slots for their forthcoming venture with ITV.

All fun speculation. But I wonder can some of these rumoured channels be attributed to:

Commonwealth games feeds.
World Cup feeds (3D or even 4K).

I understand the hardware limitations that preclude the latter. But maybe for pubs/cinemas?

You really think football fans would go to the cinema to watch a game?

Nope. Though they already have, of course.

I was merely asking whether people thought any of those suggestions stand up?

For instance. I'm not particularly interested in it, but given the extra streams VM have given to the recent Olympics (all flavours). I'm surprised to see how little publicity has been given to their plans to broadcast the Commonwealth Games particularly as they are a main sponsor.

Or have I missed something?

Broadband is certainly the focus, and this includes bringing us more streaming content to our TIVOs. However, this doesn't mean we won't be getting any more linear channels; far from it. But don't expect anywhere near as many as last year, which was truly phenominal and very much a catching up exercise as we were previously very seriously lagging behind Sky.

Interesting, referring to a company as 'we' usually means either a) you work for them or b) you are an enormous, irrational fanboy. Who would have guessed!

I really hope we see an increased focus in the on demand content. Certainly looking at striking deals with content holders for shows that do not have a UK home. I personally think that the XL package needs improving (certainly if talk of Nat Geo and History going to L is true) and this could be the way to do it.

Why try to attack OB for? "We" is a common use so do you think i work for Wolves just because i say "we are promoted?" or maybe you think i'm a fanboy of my City as i often say things like "we're having rotten weather." Get a grip man there was absolutely no need for your statement.

From the info i've had over the past year it appears XL could be heading in the direction similar to Skys HD pack but with the addition of BT Sports.
A few of my sources have stated Disney channels, nat geowild, History and H2 are all moving into the L package.

Cheers for the rumours theone. I quite like the speculation on here and treat it as such. I have no real issues with anyone who posts rumours or speculation on here.

Whether you have genuine info or you are just seeking attention, it is of no consequence to me.

I appreciate many others do not like the speculation/rumours/possible attention seeking on here, and I try not criticise them for it either. Sometimes I get drawn into pointless squabbles, but ultimately I harbour no ill feelings to anyone on here.

In your defence, some of the stuff you have said has come true.

Anyhoo, I have had a couple of drinks so I will leave it there and will probably regret posting this when sober:(:)

And it's not surprising that he doesn't reveal his sources, as they would soon stop giving him info if he did.

Thankyou for confirming , personally I'd be amazed if Sky add any third party streaming apps such as Netflix , Amazon etc being that they are a content provider I'd imagine their priorities are different to the likes of VM who leverage content from a vast array of providers. The Sky+HD software would also have to go through some radical changes for this to happen maybe on a future box though.

Some people seem to think i just pluck the info out of the air lol despite 80% of what i said was coming/going to happen has happened lol.
I tend to just bite back just to let them know really that i will not be bullied or pushed out. That's my thinking hence why i said "i don't know how they'll do it" the only way i'm thinking is maybe as you suggested it's something for a future box. I will update when i get the info as i'm very interested in this myself. YouView has plenty of potential , at the moment BT's offering is a little light on the ground channel wise but I'm sure it will improve.

YouView channel streaming can only be done via BT or TalkTalk. Third parties eg VuTV, Motors TV, NowTV, cannot currently stream live channels themselves.

Long story, explained here, basically YouView boxes can only currently decode IPTV signals sent by multicast. Third party channels independent of a customer's ISP are sent by unicast which the boxes can't decode. Hopefully the boxes will be enabled in the future, the link included a response from YouView in 2012 stating that this functionality was planned for the future.

Freeview itself is free but people now want more and it is a nice option to be able to get channels such as History, Nickleodeon for £6.99p/m if you like or the notv channels such as sky1, disney ect for £4.99. The option is there if people want it. Technically Freeview is not free anyway as you have to pay for a tv license in order to watch Freeview.
A good thing about OD services is no tv license needed aslong as you do not watch or record live tv channels.

I get the impression that you don't fully understand YouView. No one is asking you to pay for Freeview channels. You pay for the extra IPTV channels (which are also on other pay TV services like VM) and you pay directly or indirectly for the YouView PVR.

VUTV is available on none youview boxes too, you do not need Youview, talktalk or bt to get VUTV i know this as my cousin has a freeviewHD tv with internet connection and she can get VUTV, her provider is EE also WUTV offer a 14 day free trial.
Aslong as the freeviewHD box is compatable then it will recieve VUTV no problem (aslong as your bb is over 2mbs). Wether or not bt or talktalk provide the unicast service to Vutv i do not know but you certainly do not need BT or Talktalk to get it.

What I meant to clarify is that YouView cannot receive live channels from companies like VuTV, Motors TV and Sky's Now TV as these are sent by unicast.
It can only decipher channels sent by multicast. The only two companies that can send this are BT and TalkTalk via fibre to their respective subscribers.

As for the posters who claim to know the channels coming, why not post the channel names?

Some years back I was told that History HD was set to launch by my source and posted the info just for that not to happen.

The new channels list is just the list of channels that MAY launch in 2014.

No info on when or Package news was given.

finally the coming soon thread may have something...coming soon! let the fun and speculation start.

i think this time last year we had got onto about 3 different threads and so far we're still on the first!

it is a ridiculously large amount of potential channels. i'm having trouble even guessing them!

We was just on Vol. 2 this time last year.

Interesting, referring to a company as 'we' usually means either a) you work for them or b) you are an enormous, irrational fanboy. Who would have guessed!

'We' referred to the Virgin Media viewers to whom this site is dedicated. Do you really have to pick over words so meticulously? I'm afraid you are getting it spectacularly wrong.

But we like you ;)
