Agreed; not sure if Now TV will ever turn up though.

I had a quick play with the UK TV app on AFTV and PQ seems pretty fair for SD.

Tbf the pic quality is quite decent on the Youview box too from UKplay, on pc it can differ but not by anything majorly noticeable.
I think we will see all4 in the next 12 months.
I think Nowtv will appear eventually with the firetv being one of the best selling devices SKY will hopefully want their nowtv/skygo apps to be on it.

Thought there was a story both Now TV and All4 for TVs are dependent on Android 5 and will appear once that has been rolled out to the first generation Fire TV boxes?

That could be the reason Amazon are slowly rolling out Android 5 to the firetv boxes.

If the AFTV ever does get Now TV, it could turn out to be one of the best boxes around. With Netflix and Prime it would have the three main UK streaming services plus a bunch of other video sources and all but one UK Catchup service, (which presumably will appear at some stage). Plus you can install Kodi, which allows me to play my own personal DVDs that I've ripped.

And the previous downside for me of not being able to control it with my Harmony Touch Universal remote has been resolved by plugging a FLIRC into the USB port.

I have a Fire TV stick in the bedroom. Great for watching Netflix and Prime plus iPlayer works really well. Great to see UKPlay being added. Cancelled the SKY multiroom box months ago. Saving us £135 per year. That pretty much covers the cost of Amazon Prime and Netflix. We're no worse off but prefer on demand in the bedroom rather than linear TV. Bought the new NOW TV box the other day with 3 months entertainment pass. Pretty much the exact same as the old box but run much quicker. Keeping the 3 month pass until February when my SKY TV deal runs out. Will do what I always do. Cancel TV and wait to see what they offer to come back. For the first time ever I'm not too bothered if they don't come back with a good deal i.e. 50% off for a year. I think my wife has finally come around to the idea that Freeview + Netflix + Prime + Now TV is just as good, if not better than having SKY on it's own.

I don't even have freeview lol all my viewing is online, bt tv uses multicast anyway so the channels are delivered through my broadband i find bt tv, nowtv, my usa tv and netflix is everything i need, SKY stopped me in town today offering me 80% off for 12 months which i declined.

I'll be doing much the same in November, but secretly hoping Sky will make me an offer I can't refuse. I can add Sky Sports 1/2HD to my BT sub and can just about live without the rest of it. Most of the better stuff ends up on Netflix or Prime anyway.

I think that's a common patter now. A few years ago I never would have predicted that my parents would be ditching Sky and opting for a Freeview/Now TV/Netflix/Amazon combo but that's what they're doing as soon as their Sky contract is up.

Have to admit I'm looking very closely at my Virgin TV subscription i.e. what we watch and where else I could get it from. Times are a changing.

Why? Why not just let other suppliers make the technoloy to stream the content....they can still flog their network capacity to support an uptake in broadband usage. Perhaps that's where they see the profits in the future i.e. having the infrastructure to help their customers and other broadband providers meet the increased streaming demand.

One might also say Rip off.

If Sky hadn't just signed a deal with Disney and the latter were keeping all their stuff for their own service then yeah maybe subscribing to a Disney streaming service could be seen as worth it. However we'll just stick with Sky Movies on the Now TV box, we won't get the book or songs but
a) my kids prefer reading real books
b) my kids are more into bands like Bad Religion, Iron Maiden and Queen which I doubt Disney will be offering.

Which means the Disney deal that Netflix have in the US, starting 2016, definitely won't be applicable to the UK.

Quote:

The Mouse also owns the rights to all Marvel Studio films and LucasFilm (Star Wars), but these will not feature on the service straight away. Iger added, however, that DisneyLife could expand to include these.
I'm guessing this means that they will not renew current contracts with other UK on demand services that currently have these films, when they expire.

Does Sky have any of this content available via the Now TV movie sub? [Edit: Mike just answered that one]

Yes, they've got both Lucas Film content and Marvel Content but not all the content e.g. not all captain America films

I bought a Now TV box last night, actually I bought a Roku 3 and while on the tube on the way home decided I didn't need all the extra stuff as my other boxes do all of that so returned it and got a Now TV. Must say the experience browsing with a GUI on the TV is much better then browsing on a phone and then casting.

Yeah you can sideload them but all you have to do is create a usa address on your normal amazon account and just switch one click settings to your usa addy in devices and content, and grab the usa apps you want then switch it back afterwards full guide here http://www.eyeondemand.com/2014/10/2...mazon-fire-tv/
regarding the storage sideload clean master (mouse needed) and run a cleaner once a week or so.

AMC are the Network, Entertainment One are the Production company behind the show who then have the rights to sell it overseas.

I would love the opportunity to tell them what I think about their appalling product, but whenever I press the screen to take me to the survey, nothing happens- they can't even get that right!

4k skyQbox? been rumored to be coming this or early next year

http://gadgetshow.channel5.com/news/...-can-we-expect

SkyQ, Sky's 4K box: When is it coming and what can we expect?
Added: Wed 29 Jul 2015
News broke over the weekend that Sky was readying a new set-top box. The Sky+ HD box has been around for years now, so it's starting to look a little long in the tooth. So what will Sky do with its next box of tricks? Read on for everything we know.

4K

This one is a dead cert. Next month, BT will introduce BT Sport Ultra HD, which will screen games in 4K (aka UHD) resolution. Sky won't want to fall behind its rival, so will surely equip its next box with 4K. That resolution has four times as many pixels as high definition, so films, sports and even TV shows – if it follows Netflix and Amazon and starts producing some shows in the resolution – will look fantastic.

More visual user interface

According to a source speaking to the Telegraph, the next Sky box will have a more visual user interface than the current one, which is a bit text-heavy. Apparently Sky is going for an "Apple and Netflix-style experience", according to the industry insider. Which makes sense. Netflix recently rejigged its website to feel more like an app than a series of linked web pages. It ditched the carousel, letting you click to horizontally cycle through batches of titles. Hovering over a film or TV show also brings up a gallery of images. Apple TV is very visual too, with nice big pictures and that unbeatable Apple user-friendliness. In comparison, Sky's menu is a dull blue block with the only image being what's on TV in the top right. Time for a rethink.

More recording power

The new box will let you record and watch "at least" four programmes simultaneously, according to the Telegraph's source. Which should hopefully put an end to arguments about what to watch. Not only that, it will also let you watch and record using other devices, like laptops, smartphones and tablets. Sky already has the architecture set up with its Now TV and Sky Go services, so this seems like a logical next step. And anything that stops us arguing about what to watch has got to be a good thing.

Learns as you watch

Like services such as Google Now, Sky's new box will learn your preferences, and suggest other shows you might like. Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video already do this, so again, it makes sense.

A YouView-style experience?

The source also claimed the box will blur the lines between live broadcast, recorded content and on-demand offerings over the internet. Much like YouView, in fact. People don't care whether they're watching on-demand, on catch-up or live, as long as they see what they want when they want, so it makes no sense to fence off different ways of watching into different parts of the interface. Searching across all different services using one search bar would be a step in the right direction, for example, rather than having to fire up iPlayer to search for an iPlayer show. If Sky can find a way to bring it all together, it'll make things much easier for viewers.

Name and release date

The box has been developed under the name Project Ethan, and will reportedly be called SkyQ when it launches. The Telegraph's source claimed it would hit the shelves within weeks, but a source close to Sky denied that, saying it wouldn't launch any new products in the coming weeks. Our money is on a winter launch, just in time for the busy festive TV season. It would make our Christmas.

I was thinking (or hoping?) the same.

Streaming is the future; not hard disc set top box PVRs, even 4k ones.

Spot on, the great unbelievers wont like it but it will happen as OB predicted.....:D

The Sky add says something like 'Time to set your TV free'.

It's hardly 'free' being tied to a traditional PVR.

If it is a 4k box, Sky should be had-up for false advertising :D

Just looked up Skyq as suggested, looking forward to the official announcement in November as it sounds promising and innovative.

Unfortunately this could potentially be another nail in TiVo's coffin in its current form. As much as I like TiVo, it is in desperate need of an upgrade now.

Anyone having issues on fire TV tonight so have unblock us configured for Netflix? Can't play any prime content I get a invalid geo IP. Removing the DNS for unblock let's me play the Prime video.

I emailed Unblock US support but was unfortunately was told they don't support the Fire TV and there is nothing they can do.

Just tried a US Netflix and UK Prime title and both play OK (using Unblock-us).

I assume that you've tried the 'check service' on Unblock-us and power cycled the AFTV?

Yep, the service works okay it just seems like they are routing my prime Video through their DNS, the Netflix part of it works ok. Yep power cycled the Fire TV.

It's been on Appletv for ages mate it's the only platform at the moment where the live channels stream in HD, i've seen on various forums that it will arrive on Samsung tvs soon and the fire tv within next 12 months.

My post referred to a comment made by someone on here a while ago who said that Now TV only appeared on the Roku because Sky had partnered up with them, and would not appear anywhere else.

Clearly, that remark was incorrect.

That's not entirely accurate. You questioned if NowTV was on Roku devices why it couldn't be on TiVO. The answer you were given was because Sky/Now TV are a major stakeholder in Roku it would make sense for them to have their on demand service accessible on a device owned by a company they were a major stakeholder in. Nobody said it only appeared on Roku devices.

I'll concede you'll have a point if NowTV every appears on a direct competitors hardware e.g. FireTV. But that isn't going to happen, equally Amazon isn't going to be on Roku in the UK any time soon and neither Netflix or Amazon will be on the Now TV box any time soon.

I don't use android boxes mate i use firetv but both run on android kind off lol, first would be to put kodi on it and all the usual service itv, bbc iplayer, all4, demand5, amazon instant video, netflix, filmon, tv player.
If you use a vpn or smart dns abc and a+e will work without a subscription but you won't get the shows until a week or 2 after they air, showbox is another good add on too for tv shows.
I recommend installind appotide alongside the google play store as appotide will allow you to download apps such as showbox, also in my experience clean master is a must as the will clean up the cache files in kodi aswell as any dud files remaining from addons.
This site is very good for tutorials on installing certain kodi addons https://seo-michael.co.uk/

My recollection was that it had been said that Now TV was only on the Roku, hence my post. If my recollection was wrong, I apologise.

I respect that what you have said in your last paragraph is your opinion, Mike, but there are no facts to support that view. I think that with more devices and TVs supporting Now TV, Sky will make more money. They may wait until the number of new subscribers on existing devices/TVs pass their peak before allowing the app to be present on other platforms, but it will come, in my view.

Fantastic news, means I can get a Roku for my parents for Christmas and they can use all the 3 services they subscribe to (Nextflix, Now TV and Amazon) form one box, saves me buying an HDMI splitter.

Shows me to be completely out of the know :-( as only a few days I'd commented that Amazon coming to Roku was not happening soon. Either somebody has stumped up some cash (Amazon) or Roku see having all 3 on their device as a sales advantage certainly is for me in the case of my parents in that Roku have earned an extra sale from me today.

There hasn't been a more realistic reason put forward. Amazon was one of the most popular Roku channels in the US.

Perhaps this is a bid to counter the release of the new Fire TV box i.e. entice Amazon customers to buy a Roku device instead of opting to buy a Fire TV device knowing that the latter doesn't have Now TV and I'd imagine having everything on one device is more important to your general consumer than it is to me.

Whatever the drive behind this Roku has gained an extra sale today of one of their Roku 2 devices off the back of this news.

Good news. Now if only Roku would make it possible to make changes to the DNS settings on their boxes....

Some LG Blu ray players have Netflix, Now TV and Amazon on them.

Amazon is stereo only, but that won't be an issue for many people I suspect.

Fire TV OS 5 should be rolling out to the first generation Fire TV boxes soon which simplifies porting from standard Android TV and was suggested as a reason for Now TV being held back. It hasn't turned up on any Amazon tablets though, although other Sky apps have.

This really does show that the constant refrain that this or that channel or service will not appear on this platform or that platform is just subjective and with no basis in fact.

However, I must say that this was a rather spectacular piece of news, coming so soon after your very certain remark that Amazon would not come to the Roku, Mike!
