Sure but I wasn't suggesting that you did care about it, it's just nice to get a heads up before something new arrives, even if not specific dates.

Specific dates aren't always helpful, as we have seen recently with channel launches delayed for technical reasons.

I'm quite a computer geek, so I'd like a channel such as .tv back on UK TV, or some further American imports such as G4 (games and technology) or Logo (aimed at the LGBT community), as I am not biased and we do not have a channel of its kind in the UK. Also, I fancy seeing the Weather Channel and Weather Channel HD in the UK, preferably exclusive to Virgin.

As far as I'm aware they operate on their own - each country has their own regulations and channel market.

The Good Food Network would be a good addition. If you like your food and Americana the likes of Best Sandwich in America, Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, Man v Food Nation and American Street Feasts will really float your boat. Food Truck Revolution is another of my favorites.

Any news on The Sony Movie Channel? I think Virgin are maybe only 2 or 3 SD channels away from having a perfect line-up. If you turn a blind eye to the channel SKY aren't allowing anyone access too, there isn't too many worth while channels missing from Virgins EPG, in my opinion. I think Trace Sports would be a good addition to the Virgin line-up.

Seriously?!? We already have the Universal content (albeit in SD.) We have very minor amounts of contents from the food and network and travel channel. I would love food network to launch.

howardmicks, I apologize for doing this on your post, but MB has taken a lot of stick for his grammar recently (and I am fully aware mine is nowhere near correct.)
However, I do wonder if the recent uprising of grammar police will pick up on the grammar (and spelling) in this statement, or do you only want to pick on MediaBoy? Personally, I think you just enjoy bashing MB (wrongly in my opinion)

What about BSkyB? How much of an assault on its UK dominance will Virgin Media now make? “Assault is the wrong word,” Fries asserts.

“There’s a very strong history of co-operating and working well together. I don’t anticipate any fireworks whatsoever in that relationship.

“Tom’s a great choice to run this business and not just because he worked for News Corp for 20 years. He would have been a great choice either way. There’s been no negative reactions whatsoever from News Corp.”

Liberty seem to be very broadband orientated. SKY are very TV orientated. BT are trying to encroach on both markets. The days of Virgin Vs. SKY may be coming to an end. Both companies have a common competitor. SKY and Virgin may become closer than ever before.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

I doubt BT will be much of a threat to TV for a good few years considering their current setup means you have to use a discontinued set top box plugged in by ethernet to the only gigabit port on their home hub so you can get access to about 15 channels that are 700 EPG slots away from other normal channels.

No multiroom, pathetic channel line up, you have to be in a fibre optic area, hub has to be near the TV or you have to run a length of cable...

Essentially IPTV ain't ready for the big time yet.

In my opinion I think that most of the new channel deals wre already sorted, they were just awaiting confirmation of the Liberty Global deal to got through last Friday (7th June) before launching them. I also feel that Universal HD and E! HD will appear vey soon as well for the same reason.

Found this on Digital Spy from 2010...

Virgin Saying Bye To MTV Shows , MTV +1 and MTV Classic from 24th August...
I dont understand what is going on here. There is a message screen on channel 321 where MTV Classic used to be saying that a few popular music chanels will be saying goodbye... Mtv shows and MTV Classic were part of a new line up only a few months back, and now they are getting rid of them ? I loved VH1 classic and when it was taken off and replaced by MTV classic I thought maybe it was a setp forward in the right direction... I am aware that it is now the 30th of August, but they kept there words, these channels have now vanished from Virgin.

Now I see there wont be any classic music channel other than Magic, and MTV shows is going to along wth MTV+1. I hope Virgin have struck a good deal with Sky to replace these channels as this is a big blow to lose these music channels. If it wasn't bad enough already, Virgin have already lost a good number of popular radio channels as well.. Are they any plans to replace all these channels and radio stations we are losing on Virgin, or is this standard across both the Sky and Virgin platforms ?

Is this the same Travel Channel that was cable exclusive years ago that eventually left cable and went FTA onto satellite?

Is it still on the Sky EPG as a FTA channel?

Unconfirmed but I think LG will start doing deals with Broadcasters for both Virgin Media and UPC Ireland.

Maybe that why Food Network and Travel Channel are both set to launch on Virgin???

Indeed it has, but perhaps he was referring to Discovery which up until 5 years ago was owned and controlled by the person who is now the ultimate boss of Virgin Media aka the billionaire John Malone.

As for the Travel Channel it was owned by Discovery between 1997 to 2007 when it was sold to US cableco Cox. In 2010 Cox sold Travel to its current owner Scripps who now also own half of UKTV.

There are very few operators who would refuse to allow you add-ons to an existing contract! If you have an 18 month contract with Virgin Media, they will not prevent you from adding Sky Movies!

Incidentally, good to see we are getting the Travel Channel. I used to enjoy watching that and was really annoyed when they took it off cable.

Only Sky Atlantic to go and I will be quite happy with the channels myself.

All I will then want is the access to the six lanes of programmes Mr Fries was talking about!

That I did say yesterday (I think) for - still unconfirmed as set to launch this week by any insiders.

Food Network and Travel Channel can take up to THREE weeks after that rumour started (On Saturday) to launch.

It still an rumour in my eyes - look what happen to Universal HD and E! HD they are both still to appear on Virgin.

I agree, this sort of speculation isn't very helpful. For all we know, a new carriage agreement with Viacom might not include any additional channels. The grouping and renumbering of the MTV branded music channels in the EPG would indicate that they haven't left any obvious gaps for adding channels in the short term.

I was just going on the deals Virgin Media has signed with broadcasters in 2013 - Discovery, ITV, Channel 4, Cartoon Network/TCM and Zee.

Anyway an insider has reveal to me in the past hour that no channels are set to launch this week (As far as my insider knows.)*

*Info may change.

True but every negotiated deal will be different. Say, for example, VM negotiates carriage for a group of fairly popular channels at a certain rate. If the content provider wants to charge the same rate/channel to add further, less popular, channels, it wouldn't be in VM's interests to agree to that. I'm not saying this is what has happened, just that negotiations are complex and we don't know what goes on behind the scenes.

Yes, but there's a difference in reporting what his insiders have told him and taking a wild guess without any insider knowledge. Not that there's any harm in taking a wild guess, it's just unlikely that VM will launch channels just because someone has speculated that they could.

I think Media Boy is usually very clear in explaining when his posts are based on his insider info and when they're the result of supposition based on his frankly extraordinary knowledge of carriage deals and history of cable channel launches. If you choose to take a supposition as fact and then get disappointed when it doesn't come off then you're the only one to blame, I reckon.
