I can now reveal that the following channels should launch on Thursday on Virgin Media:

Channels to launch:
-ITV2 HD to launch on Virgin Channel 176 on the XL Package.
-ITV3 HD to launch on Virgin Channel 177 on the XL Package.
-ITV4 HD to launch on Virgin Channel 178 on the XL Package.

-No word yet on when E! HD, Universal HD and Animal Planet HD will launch on Virgin Media.

NOTE: I do not work for Virgin Media so all the information on this post is still subject to change.

Great job by Virgin. If and when all the above channels launch there isn't too many top quality HD channels left for them too add. Minus channels that SKY are holding back, what is really left to get? In fact it's not unthinkable that SKY News HD and SKY Sports News HD might arrive soon too. Exciting times for fans of HD!

Well they may have took their time to deliver, but it is better than nothing.
I think Virgin are upping the ante, especially since YouView is now on the scene with BT and TalkTalk offering TV services.

There's still a lot more potential that can be unlocked with the TiVo service. Film streaming services, expansion of music on demand etc.

Exciting times :D

Virgin Media has just launch Style on Virgin Channel 285.

Can a YouView box really compete with a TiVO anyway. YouView boxes can only currently record the channels provided by the Freeview aerial, & not the broadband streamed channels. Watching one streamed channel while recording another is a non starter.

Be interesting to see if they encounter the same problems with multiroom streaming rights as Virgin have with the TiVO.

Why? I have seen the shows available on that channel and the overall channel looks incredibly boring.
I wanna see good channels such as Sky Atlantic, Food Network and Scuzz on cable. Also, I quite fancy that holidays channel called Holiday + Cruise on Sky EPG 284.:o:

Hear, hear!

Nearly there, just Sky Atlantic and the video streaming on TIVO courtesy of Netflix/Lovefilm being the sticking points! :)

This should help on the web content front like Netflix/Lovefilm

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...y-liberty.html

"Virgin Media Inc. (VMED), the U.K. cable-TV provider being bought by Liberty Global Inc. (LBTYA), plans to make Web services like Netflix a more integral part of its offering rather than fighting them, its chief executive officer said.

“Our approach is to get every content asset you possibly can on the platform,” CEO Neil Berkett said yesterday in an interview at the Cable Congress in London."

As far as I understand it BBC One - Channel 5 have to be the first channels listed in the EPG as they are Public Service Broadcasters

Also I think that Virgin Media use 101 as the starting number so that those coming over from Sky (and now Freesat) know where to start.

That's a real shame - would be an instant way of clearing up the epg without messing too much with the status quo. Cheers for the answer though.

Once BBC hd rebrands as BBC 2 hd there will be an hd variant of each of the first five channels so the requirement for them to take the first five spaces on the epg could easily be met, no?

The second point, if true, is actually a little insulting. How long do you think it would take customers to figure it out?

From what I gather, ITV haven't done the necessary work to broadcast in 5.1
STV have, and some programmes do broadcast 5.1 on STV HD

Perhaps essjay or Spiderplant will know more about the technical reasons why ITV don't.

Nope, as the HD variants don't cover all regional opt outs

Wouldn't 000 to 099 actually be 0 to 99, so a departure from the 3 digit channel number policy? Or is it technically possible to have mandatory leading zeros?

For me it's sports and movies. The French Open will be on ITV2 HD and the Europa League on ITV4 HD. Whilst the movies aren't always blockbusters there are decent titles like Unleashed, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Sean Of The Dead, Ocean's Thirteen, Red Dragon etc...

I don't mind Park Avenue 666 or Billy Connelly Route 66 either.

They are defined as AC-3 audio with more than 2 channels. So it looks promising, but you'll have to wait and see what ITV actually broadcast.

So why is it a big issue if it starts 101 rather than 001?

I'm not making a big issue of it, Ben. You're the ones who don't seem to think their customers wouldn't be able press 1 rather than 101, I'm merely agreeing with another poster who suggested moving all the hd channels to numbers 1-99. I'm grateful to Spiderplant for what I reckon is a much more likely reason for why it can't happen.

By the way, since I'm a customer, if I actually wanted to make a big issue of it I'd be well within my rights to do so without you asking why.

You don't need 100 to make the idea impracticable.

Either would be possible, but not having leading zeroes means slower channel changes as the software has to wait to see if you are going to enter more digits.

And since I'm someone who comes on here as an individual, rather than an official representative of VM, I'm allowed to be interested in why what number the channels start from is worth worrying about ;)

I didn't say it did, although having said that, would there be a problem moving "hidden" channels onto another empty range such as 650 to 699?

Either would be possible, but would it be possible with existing firmware?

I almost exclusively watch HD channels. My get around is to go into guide press blue button and select HD, I get all the HD channels to browse then.

I set my HD channels as my favourites and view only theses on the TV guide on the iPad app, very easy way of quick scanning of what's on!

Here is a big question for everyone including Media Boy.

Can the VM system take on MORE channels than the numbers on the present EPG.

The point being that nobody is worrying about it, except apparently Virgin themselves. All that has happened here is somebody has said they'd like the hd channels to start from 1, a couple of us have considered this a good suggestion, and Spiderplant has explained why it can't happen. I couldn't give a toss what capacity you think you post in (although I'd suggest you probably can't have it both ways), but you simply don't get to put words in my mouth. Nobody was making this a big deal until you came along and asked why it was being made into a big deal!

I've no doubt that as per usual you'll require the last word, but I'll no longer be able to see it.

That would be possible. In fact the Olympic channels were parked in that range so the 550s could be reused for the Paralympics.

Either scheme would need an update.

Defined in the broadcast.

The way it is set up potentially allows them to broadcast 5.1. We'll all have to wait and see what is actually broadcast.

So, in other words, the codec used by the audio stream is defined as AC-3 (Dolby Digital) 5.1 ?

When they launched on SKY they where brand new channels. I don't think they started broadcasting until the evening.

Have channels ever launched on Virgin in the afternoon before? I can't remember a time when it has happened before.

I hope they do arrive soon as i told my Dad last night he'd be able to watch them from today :(

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

Well this time we have had some strong evidence, a user on DS found the ITV HD Channel logos in the TV Anywhere source page, and also the official link doesn't seem to post channel updates until later in the afternoon. Even Style Network didn't go up till yesterday, despite that being given a placeholder a week ago and it launching at 7am.
