Got the purple EPG, I suppose its better than the ntl purple.... Must admit its easier on the eye than red.

I suppose we shouldn't read anything into the fact that the VM name has been removed from the mini guide and EPG. We shouldn't read anything into that at all.... at least the infinity logo is there, for now.

Just tried to go back through some menus using the back button and it wasn't working, hmmm...... couldn't seem to get to the little tv window in the top right either to change channels while still in the menus. I'm sure I could do that before, but I barely use the tivo, so not sure.

I've never liked the channel change speed on cable since digital arrived, but as for now, VM choose to implement the delay to "aid" browsing the mini guide. Personally, I would prefer instant channel change and no delay but given up a long time ago on that one.

Oh and the box still needs to wake up, sigh....

Perhaps one day in a galaxy far, far away, there'll be a cable tv service with fast channel change, instant start up and I can reorder the channels where I bloody well want them.

First impressions of the new VM interface are good.

I like the colour scheme and it appears to be a lot easier to read through things. Will test it out more including the search enhancements as I can.

Got the update here in Enfield (Haringey headend) and at the moment navigation through all the menus is much smoother. The purple does not bother me if anything I find it a bit easier on the eye.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I can only compare this update to the upcoming Android Lollipop update, everything looks different but in reality all is mostly in the same place.

The colour doesn't bother me, at the end of the day I mostly watch TV and not the TiVo graphics. I guess technically it saves energy on LED TV's as the plum is not as bright as the old red. This maybe far fetched but feasible.

I didn't like the fact there is less room for the show title in my shows but I did read in this thread that you can remove the categories in my shows so the format is the same as the old way. I'll need to decide which to keep, if I use the categories enough then I'll live with the reduced title space.

Speed is the same on my TiVo, I'm used to this so at least it's not worse.

All we're really talking about here is change, some people embrace it whilst others despise it.

Dates aren't announced in advance.

Incidentally, area 04 is the billing system number, but it's the headend that matters.

IMO it isn't any faster, i was hoping that Netflix would be fast loading, but it isn't. shame.

That said i do like the colour change.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

The TiVo menus themselves are slightly faster, however iPlayer and Netflix wouldn't be affected by this change as those apps have not changed or been updated.

Don't know why people are expecting that apps would be faster without a new version.

Got up for work at 4.30am....no update. 15 minutes later all the lights came on the Tivo and it was going crazy and 10 minutes later it was updated.

Really impressed how quick it boots up now. Looking forward to playing with it later tonight...the Tivo box that is!

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Needless to say the speed improvements were short lived, I'm not using what to watch now and the screen is too cramped with categories on in my shows so they've gone. Still hating the colour though...

jobbie8 14-11-2014 12:33

Slower Tivo.

All 3 of mine are getting slower, takes up to 5-8 seconds to start playing a recording since the update and Home and My Shows screens aren't loading up fully instantly like they used too. Rebooted more times since the update than before, hope this improves soon

Can someone tell me if all "red" version of the firmware (i.e. that running throughout late 2013 and most of 2014) were all v20.3.5 regardless of whether they were Cisco/Samsung boxes or 1Tb/500Gb.

I thought they were all v20.3.5 (with the VMC/VMS part of the version string for Cisco/Samsung)? Someone on the VM forums mentioned v20.3.8 - was this for 500Gb boxes?

Fingers crossed for area 04 (Wolverhampton head-end I think) being updated this week! I think earlier I read earlier their were 23 (ish) areas still to be updated so surely that means it's just 7/8 areas on Tuesday, Wednesday with the rollout complete on Thursday?

I suspect there is network engineering work happening in Manchester for the rest of the week so this was the only day available.

The change freeze doesn't start until the middle of December.

You're probably trying to stream a channel which cannot be streamed.

Not all channels can be streamed.

Try channel 104 which can be streamed then 101 which can't.

Having lived with the update for a few days I have noticed it to be a lot slower than before.

In particular pressing My shows takes around 3-4 seconds to load everything on the page when it was pretty instant before. Also pressing the play button from My shows takes around the same time for the recording to start.

Hopefully this will be fixed in a future update and it isn't a hardware limitation on the TiVo

I've also noticed some areas slowing right down on both of my boxes although it seems an intermittent problem in that sometimes the response is as quick or quicker than the previous version but sometimes I get a long delay with either a black screen or the spinning circle. My Shows, starting playback, planned recordings and going from the menus to live TV are the areas where I've seen this.

A bit disappointing really but not the end of the world. Perhaps the old technology used for the UI was not the only cause for perceived sluggish performance, it may be more to do with the people writing the software.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

It's nice that the UI no longer looks like a US local news channel from the nineties, but yes it's still pretty sluggish. Maybe the hardware just isn't up to it. TiVo still doesn't solve the fundamental problem of making it easier to discover new content that might be of interest across live channels, recordings and on-demand.

TiVo Netflix still seems to be problematic when linking with Netflix on Android. The TiVo app still won't load before the Android app times out trying to connect and even when it has loaded it regularly gives communication error messages and sometimes shows multiple devices with the same name.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

In my experience so far there is now much more fluctuation between speeds. Sometimes it is lightening fast, others it's painfully slow. It took over 5 seconds to display and then populate my shows at one point yesterday, which frankly isn't good enough.

I have today noticed that now when you browse tv and collections there is a "record this collection" option, which seems like a good idea.

That's a bit uncharitable, Mad Max! The fact that the EPG doesn't jump back to today after modifying a recording, the addition of the 'partly watched' list and categorisations of programmes under 'My Shows' for example have made a significant difference for the better, IMO.

I'm not bothered about losing that brothel red background and the speed seems to vary according to where you live.

I agree that there are still improvements to be made, but it is not true to say there's no improvement with this update. I am pleased with it, as far as it goes.

Hopefully, your problems will be short lived. :)

I have to say there's a part of me, knowing that TIVO is a superior bit of kit to Sky's box and most of the Freeview boxes, that wants to know why TIVO is so much slower at Menu's, changing channels etc.

I realise that if it's more advanced it has more to do but that excuse only goes so far.

Could Ben or Spider enlighten us :)

We do have to remember there is also the transport medium / technology to take into account.

The hardware we have is now quite a few years old so it is hardly surprising it is showing it's age.

Woohoo! Just turned on the TV here in Poole and found it on the VM preview channel so got hopeful (it only seems to do that on big updates), switched to Home and we are purple! Just off to have a play with it.

The red bar is really jarring against the purple. It's a minor detail in the midst of a massive overhauls, but I can't remember if I've read this is staying or will be altered later?

Happy day

(How sad is my life that this makes me so happy)

It's a shame they didn't give you the choice of more categories for the left column of My Shows. It means unless you have kids and watch a lot of sport, it's a step backwards.

If they had given you the choice of any of the eleven categories you get in the TV guide it would have been great. I would have liked HD, Documentaries and Radio in my left column. The Kids, TV and Radio(exlcuding Kids) and Sport categories are pointless for me. So all I get is more cluttered screen and no real advantages.

1st thing I noticed is that I jumped from 60% full last night to 98% full. It seems to have put all my deleted shows back.

Just a heads up to those who keep theirs pretty full.

Off to do some deleting

Have you had a look at the options (press green in my shows) The list can be customised, perhaps not to the degree you're after but better than the default.

Hope that helps

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Spent half an hour deleting the correct shows and back down to 60% free space! but still no shows recording past Friday. All showing as clashes or not enough space.

I bumped a few recording priorities as that usually fixes this clash issue and forces everything to recheck, but that only got my recordings free to Monday. Doing a full reboot now to see if that will help.

On the plus side the reboot took place and completed wile I was typing this. That was FAST

Edit to add:

The reboot didn't make a difference, but two more runs of switching a few recording priorities finally forced everything to show as recording without clashes

Thanks for mentioning that. I hadn't looked at the options and choosing the 'Going Away Soon' alerted me to a couple of films I haven't watched that will be delteed in a couple of days.

You've answered your own question. If you ran simple middleware on the TiVo hardware, it would be quick. (Have you used a V-HD? That illustrates it nicely)

I had noticed that, but thanks anyway.

Even after I'd got rid the boxes I don't want, I still think it's worse than it used to be. For me, the only category left that I think added anything was the Movies and I don't think that added enough to make up for the more cluttered screen.

The fact you can get rid of the stuff you don't want makes it more annoying they didn't give us more choices. They could have left the options I wanted turned off by default and only let those of us who wanted them turn them on. The television programs are already categorized into these groups, so it shouldn't have taken any more work to implement it.

Just deleted the list of categories, they didn't match what we wanted and just cluttered up the screen too much

Like others have said, the screen shots didn't look to good, but the new colour scheme is pretty good

When I go in My Shows, then pressing Green then into My Shows Options, and going down to Left Column [Show Categories], I get the option to Show These Categories

However when I select say 'Going Away Soon', and press the Green button again to use these options, it doesn't display in the Left Column.

Must be down to single figures now surely (there were 23 areas still to be done according to an earlier post and at least 12 have been done since then and I don't think that included Manchester which was done on Monday). I wonder if the remaining areas will be done tonight?

I did say "23-ish". There are now 11 left, and we expect to finish next Tuesday.

Fingers crossed for Wolverhampton tomorrow - been last day but one a couple of times now so lets hope the theory holds!

I have assumed that this update fixes the "Not Available - No Longer In Guide" bug where the second back-to-back fails to record and disappears from planned recordings? I do hope I get the update before the weekend so I can check this scenario out as over the weekend my planned recordings are full of back-to-backs (with lots of overlap padding) on Sky F1 - I am sure if the bug still exists then I could get it to rear its ugly head the weekend. Could be the last easy way of attempting to provoke the bug until the F1 season starts next year!

Yes, it's fixed.

That depends on your tastes. Many people seemed to manage it with Emmerdale and Corrie ;)

Interesting. It seems to be a relatively rare bug over on the VM forums - I was beginning to think it was just me that suffered from it! I am a little shocked that it has taken a year to get it fixed though.

Tomorrow - the World ?

This is how Hitler started - he cabled Poland and that was the last straw, little known fact.

This morning after waiting a good 6 or 7 seconds (Yes, I counted lol) to fully load up My Shows I decided to get rid of the categories on the left hand side to see if it made any difference.

It loaded a lot quicker the next time it was pressed but I didn't get a chance to see if it was slow because it was the first time My Shows was pressed after turning the box on. I'll check tonight and run further tests.

Can anyone else test the customisation of the Category list?

Yea I tried that after reading your post last night and I got the same as you

Thanks, glad it's not just me.

So now I can't even get the original categories back such as partially viewed.

Seriously, who beta tests and trials these new features and reports back (or fails to) to VM.

Tried on one of the boxes in the office and it worked for me. You have to make sure you do green twice - once in 'My Shows Left Column' where you select the category, and then green again at 'My Shows Options'

It appears that 'Partially Watched' and 'Going away Soon' only appear in the list if there is a program to display in that category.

Yes that worked for me the other day.:)
