However, the Freddie Head-trained filly turned on the after-burners and caught Gordon Lord Byron in a matter of strides before powering clear and winning eased down by three lengths. Gordon Lord Byron just clung on for second by a short neck from Richard Fahey's Garswood, with Dux Scholar in fourth.

War wins Dewhurst battle.

War Command gave Aidan O'Brien a belated first two-year-old Group One triumph of the season when lifting the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.

However, it was a workmanlike rather than an impressive victory for the Coventry and Futurity Stakes winner, who had to show his battling qualities to get home in front.

War Command, the 10-11 favourite, was hard ridden by Joseph O'Brien to hold 20-1 shot Cable Bay by a length and a quarter, with Outstrip third and Anjaal fourth.

Astaire leads home Ryan one-two.

Astaire put up an ultra-game performance when making all the running to land the Vision.ae Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.

Winner of the Gimcrack Stakes on his previous start, the Kevin Ryan-trained colt gained a couple of lengths on his rivals when accelerating two furlongs out, but the 8-1 shot was pushed hard in the final furlong by his stablemate Hot Streak.

He was still half a length ahead at the line, however, with Justice Day a length and a half further away in third, while Aidan O'Brien's 2-1 favourite Great White Eagle never threatened and was a big disappointment.

Al Thakhira stepped up on her Yarmouth debut success to run out a convincing winner of the Group Two Vision.ae Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket.

The 5-1 shot, trained by Marco Botti, was always travelling well for Martin Harley as Thewandaofu set the pace.

Once Harley pressed the button, Al Thakhira went clear to score by three and a quarter lengths from Blockade, with Valonia third and the odds-on favourite Lightning Thunder only fourth.

Soft ground expected at Ascot.

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...e&sub=&day=Mon

Ground conditions are expected to be on the soft side for Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Chris Stickels described the going as good to soft, soft in places after he walked the track on Sunday.

The course has already absorbed 16 millimetres of rain since Thursday and the forecast for the week is an unsettled one.

"It's a mixture of good to soft and soft today. We've had eight millimetres so far and it's still raining at the minute. We've had 16mm since Thursday after a dry week before that. The wet weather we've had has turned it on the soft side," said Stickels.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, the four-year-old fell short of his best form this season, winning just one of his three starts.

Camelot was being trained for the Breeders' Cup Turf next month but was found to be lame this morning.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the filly has not been seen since her battling victory in front of Her Majesty at the Royal meeting and she also started her season at Ascot in May when coming clear in the Sagaro Stakes.

Dean Ivory feels Sirius Prospect has plenty in his favour as the five-year-old bids to improve on last year's third in the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

The Gone West gelding tends to be at his peak in the autumn, relishes cut in the ground and has shown he acts on the Berkshire track. One of his career-best performances came in this Group Two prize over six furlongs 12 months ago when he was third to Maarek, and Ivory reports his charge to be in the form of his life.

Sky Lantern and Toronado are unlikely to run on Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday if the ground is soft, which would leave Olympic Glory as Richard Hannon's only runner in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

All three horses hold entries in the Group One over a mile, while Sky Lantern has an alternative engagement in the Qipco Champion Stakes.

While Olympic Glory is a certain runner, Toronado could be rerouted to the Breeders' Cup - with Sky Lantern also in the frame for a trip to Hong Kong
