Just noticed on ESPN America Website

ESPN America is available on Virgin Media channel 533 but differs depending on what Virgin TV package you subscribe to.

M & L pack subscribers: ESPN America costs an additional £10
XL Pack subscribers: ESPN America is free as part of your package

That was changed in the last day it was not there yesterday I'm sure of it

Nobody knows yet, VM haven't said anything regarding this yet. I imagine that the contract VM have agreed with ESPN hasn't begun yet.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

After the Setanta demise VM issued this statement

"
If you have size M or L TV and would like to continue to get ESPN America you just need to give us a call on 150 - free from any Virgin Media phone - or on 0845 454 1111 from any other phone, and we can add it to your TV pack for £10 per month. If you have XL TV and subscribed to it previously, you don't need to do anything, the channel will still be available to you."

This situation will change no doubt once the new ESPN channel and VM come to an agreement.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I just called VM customer services about ESPN America and they say that it is a mistake on the ESPN website so I called VM retentions department where a really friendly guy checked the ESPN website and he then contacted various departments within VM to find out (I was on hold for 20 mins), when he came back he said that he could not find out any information on it and had emailed a department to find out and told me best to call back on Monday/Tuesday to see what the situation is.

Hopefully we on XL will get it free as a replacement for Setanta but from reading other posts on here even if we do get it probably won't be for long as ESPN is supposed to be taking over the channel number to broadcast UK sport.

After a very long discussion with a person on the phone and talking to the ops team at virgin, it seems very confused. All links to espn america have now gone off the virgin additional channels section of the website. ESPN are advertising it as free to xl customers. The ops team are now saying it is no longer possible for anyone on M or L to subscribe to ESPN America at all. It seems to point to free on XL to me or pricing is about to be revealed.

Without looking at the various web sites, my interpretation from what was posted here was that, if you had ESPN before as part of a Setanta bundle, you should still have it if you're on XL and can have it again for £10/m on M or L. However, if you never had it, you still won't regardless of your service level (M, L or XL). I also surmised that this will change when ESPN relaunch the service and anyone who wants it will have to sign up for it again.

Whether VM realise that this is what ESPN believe to be the case is another story.

Did I get it right?

I think that VM will go right to the wire on this matter, like they the channel on the cheap again. I reckon it will be free to XL, but you will have to pay for the other channel, as they are launching the new channel as purely ' ESPN'. (i am back, and still whinging)

No.

ESPN America will morph into ESPN (with the premiership football) in August on the same channel number. Everyone who subscribes to the XL pack will get it and those on lower packs can subscribe to it if they wish. No more complicated than that.

The BIG question is, will cable get ESPN HD as well...?

I doubt that there will be any freebies. I have XL but don't have ESPN America and don't expect to get ESPN automatically when it raplaces ESPN America on channel 533 (despite Media Boy reporting it as 553 ).

My understanding is that even if you have ESPN America now, you will have to subscribe to the new channel when it launches, regardless of your TV pack.

Something is wrong with your box. ESPN America comes "free" as part of the XL pack. Phone customer services and ask them to investigate especially if you don't want to miss any premiership games when the "new" ESPN channel launches.

I hope so

If we are not getting HD at the same time as sky. Having the SD free on XL is the only way to make me stay with VM plus a moan on the phone to VM

I'm on the VIP package moving to sky for just TV would be £64.75 a month :(

Indeed. VM paid a lot of money for the Setanta channels for the direct reason to entice people to take the XL tv pack as premiership football was included in comaprison to Sky's packs where you need to subscribe to premium channels to watch all premiership football.

If the gap isn't filled in the XL pack with the loss of the Setanta channels, some people may choose to downgrade. VM make a lot of dosh on their top tier packs and they don't wish to lose this revenue.

Seemingly ESPN America will cease in the UK on the 3rd and a new channel ESPN will air and take the place of ESPN America on the same channel no. So it should still be part of the package.

Does anyone not just think that it will be free to XL customers, ESPN have jumped the gun with the announcement and VM are just denying it for the time being.

MIB4 25-07-2009 14:29

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I think VM will continue to charge for ESPN. At present ESPN America is still a premium channel costing £10 a month (even with the TV XL bundle). VM are hardly likely to then give ESPN for free and reduce their own income.

VM is still listing (according to their own PDF Channel guide) ESPN America AND the new ESPN channel as existing side by side rather than the latter replacing the former. It also has both marked as premium channels.

Seems more likely that the fee to receive ESPN will be £10 with ESPN America bundled with it at no extra cost.

That way subscribers who had ESPN America with Setanta Sports for £10 before won't be losing out by much (if anything at all) as the cost won't have changed, just substituting Setanta with ESPN America.

Yep,your right. I'm getting confused between my old sky tv package and cable. On Sky you used to get ESPN (NASN as was) as part of the Setanta pack.

There is no new channel. ESPN America will change its name on 3rd August to ESPN and will show the football inbetween its American sports.

Quote:

LONDON (AP) — ESPN will broadcast Premier League matches in Britain on a channel previously dedicated to American sports.

The matches will be aired on the British ESPN channel, previously known as ESPN America. The channel will continue showing American sports, such as baseball and ice hockey.
No new channel licence request has been put into OFCOM. The extra ESPN channel in the Virgin Channels PDF document MAY be referring to ESPN Classics... or just a cock up... this is Virgin afterall!

In addition, the ESPN website is telling people that the new channel will be on Sky channel 417, the current home of ESPN America.

MIB4 25-07-2009 15:07

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Would have to be an error as they don't have ESPN Classics on VM...

Well assuming that to all be correct (although it has to be said that the Associated Press have actually released some contradictory statements) clearly they will charge for it and it won't be free otherwise they are reducing their income and VM aren't renowned for that. So talk of free to XL subscribers I think is just wishful thinking (would love it to be true but just don't see it happening).

Your OFCOM comment is far more convincing than the AP release.

Seems safe to say existing subscribers will just continue to pay the tenner and receive ESPN and anyone else who wants it will have to pay extra compared to their current subscription fees.

Here is a good question then, IF ESPN is FREE to XL customers, why is is blocked on my box.

And the other, Sky are charging only £9.00 for the ESPN football, and l cannot see them dropping the America channel, so VM have got to come up with a better deal for customers, as customers will simply go over to Sky, where it will be cheaper, so come VM sort the problem out quickly.

'ESPN America' is being dropped - by ESPN! It is being REPLACED by 'ESPN' UK

MIB4 25-07-2009 17:15

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

ESPN America is not free to XL customer on VM, that is why you can't see it. It is a subscription channel (£10 a month). Not a good question as this info has been said a lot of times now ;-)

According to all the info above, ESPN America is becoming ESPN so Sky have no option to keep or drop ESPN America as it will cease to exist as that name as the channel is re-branding, and as such VM will have it too, presumably still at the £10 rate.

Could be a simple misunderstanding between the web team and the people they get the info from.

There has to be a fair element of doubt as this is the espn america website, and espn america is closing on the 3rd. So why would they change the package information to state it's availability on XL for free after the channels been closed, when they haven't added the same information to the website of the channel that's replacing it? It makes zero sense for that information to go on the espn america site.

Not strictly true. The version we are currently receiving has to continue running for the Scandinavian countries who can't watch the European version due to similar NFL rights issues. I believe the version we'll be getting will be a brand new channel in place of the current version of ESPNA rather than the existing ESPNA morphing into ESPN UK. Although I think that the chances are slim to none, I hold out a small hope that VM somehow manage to arrange to carry both channels.

Well yes, I did mean in this country. The point still stands, why advertise how to get ESPN UK on the ESPNA website, ESPNA won't exist here so it makes no sense.

I'd say smaller than slim to none as the content shown on ESPNA has already been confirmed to be showing on ESPN UK, there's no need to have two channels showing mostly the same content. In future ESPNA may come back if ESPN get enough content to push the American sports back out onto their own channel, but not for a while.

I'm probably wrong but I didn't think Setanta was free to XL customers before...I thought it came as part of the VIP package where you got all the Sky Sports (1-3) and Setanta??? Or for those that paid the Sports subscription?

So will ESPN not simply be a replacement for those that are VIP or pay the Sports subs?

MIB4 26-07-2009 01:39

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Setanta wasn't free to XL customers with the Sky SPorts package, it was £10 independently of the fees for Sky Sports and as part of the £10 package you got NASN which became ESPN America.

The price didn't change once Setanta went into admin and ceased broadcasting in the UK so it is safe to say VM don't see the loss of Setanta as worthy of a price reduction so ESPN America rebranding to ESPN will not result in a price reduction or ESPN being free to XL customers and/or Sky Sports subscribers.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Ok, but I def got the Setanta channels included in the VIP package, so should I expect to get ESPN in as well?

Setanta became free to all TV-XL subscribers shortly after VM lost the basic Sky channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Setanta Sports channels did not become free. Setanta Sports news did. Big difference. Or to be more precise, once they lost they basic channels including Sky Sports news they created a new sprots channel in combination with Setanta sports.

Setanta Sports 1 and 2 continued to be premium channels that cost £10 per month (with NASN/ESPN America included).

Don't expect anything. There are no guarantees.

Setanta was free to ALL XL TV customers. It was only a premium channel to those with M & L packages. ESPN America was not provided for free to XL TV customers, and was priced at £10 a month. It was included in the Setanta subscription for those on M & L.

MIB4 26-07-2009 14:27

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Apologies, I did check my facts. Unfortunately I checked my facts by my old bills and whilst apparently Setanta Sports was free they didn't list it as free on my bill but as part of the £10 package for NASN/ESPN America.

Sorry again but if VM will choose to list a free set of channels as being part of a £10 package add-on then what is a person to think (other than that their itemised billing sucks, which admittedly I have always felt).

Back on the main focus it doesn't change the main point I have made a few times here that NASN/ESPN America is not free on any package and does cost an extra tenner so the likelihood is VM will just carry on with that charge when the channel is re-branded on the 3. :-)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

So you think that VIP will continue to include the more expensive Sky Sports (+ movies), but not ESPN...

that blows!

VIP is hardly VIP anymore when it doesn't include certain channels, and only comes with 20Mb BB, not 50Mb...lol

We know C4HD is testing, same with FX. I doubt Living is testing, same with ESPN.

Now that virgin are providing their premium/add on channels through Virgin Media Entertainment, it means we can have loads more HD channels, supposed to be coming in during the summer or September.

does anyone actually know the date of the HD channel launch or not ???

the reason i ask is because VM made a vague announcement by saying "by the end of july". and then never actually backed it up with anything more.

we are all expecting something this week but i am having major doubts that it actually will.

I don't think it'll be the end of July. I know we're getting LIVING in HD in July but that's all. I don't think they want us to tell customers an exact date incase something doesn't go to plan and means we get 3000000 calls from people complaining that it didn't go through on that day.

No, we're not getting Living HD in July. Only MTVNHD, Nat Geo HD and FX HD in July.

Media Boy said the channels should launch either Monday, Wednesday or Friday of this week, but never specified where he got the information.

HD Channels update: HD Testing in Ex-C&W areas.

VMTest1 - Channel4 HD
VMTest2 - National Geographic HD
VMTest3 - FX HD
VMTest4 - MTVNHD
VMTest5 - not broadcasting
VMTest6 - not broadcasting

BBCHD = 17.6Mbps bitrate, 1920x1080i, 2.0/5.1 448kbps AC3 Audio.
National Geographic HD = 16.8Mbps bitrate, 1920x1080i, 5.1 384kbps AC3 audio. Probably 2.0 for some documentaries. Screenshot - http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/915...2520h51m28.png
MTVHD = 15.0Mbps bitrate, 1920x1080i, 2.0 384kbps AC3 Audio, possibly 5.1 for some music video/concerts. Screenshot - http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/814...2117h08m02.png
FX HD = 15.0Mbps bitrate, 1920x1080i, 2.0 384kbps AC3 audio, possibly 5.1 for some shows. Screenshot: http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/4448/fxhd.png
Channel4 HD = 16.8Mbps bitrate, 1920x1080i, 2.0/5.1 384kbps audio. Screenshot: http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2...2223h26m34.png

NOTE: post updated as Virgin are now testing with improved video bitrate for Channel4HD and National Geographic HD of 16.8Mbps instead of 15.0Mbps that they were testing with a few days ago. Audio for channel4hd was incorrectly stated as 192kbps .MP2 2.0 it is actually AC3 2.0/5.1 depending on the show and it is 384kbps bitrate. Screenshots have been re-uploaded as tinypic was resizing them to a lower res than the 1920x1088 that they are. HD screenshot of a channel4HD show added too (the e4/channel4 show Skins).

On the "Boiler room" for customer care it says we will be getting LIVING in July? Last time I checked anyway.

Just googled it to make sure it was LIVING I saw and as far as I can see I was right,

"Starting from the end of July, Living, FX, MTV Networks International and National Geographic will all be getting HD channels; bolstering the level of high definition content available on Virgin Media not inconsiderably. "

But to be honest, I don't think any of the channels will be on before August.

Fingers crossed that we have made sense of what has been tested and that for once VM will produce the goods in the time frame they themselves have given..but..it won't be the first time we have been left waiting.
