I don't call AC Milan an easy draw.
Nor is Barcelona, I was employing a neat verbal trick known as 'irony'. Considering Ferguson lost in Turkey to get an easier draw, I laughed a lot when that came out.

I see AC are the favourites for the whole thing now, though. Time to get the pizza out, Manc boys, you're up against a proper team there. Footballer of the Year and all.

11-2 - AC Milan
13-2 - Barcelona and Chelsea
15-2 - Arsenal
8-1 - Juventus
11-1 - Inter Milan and Manchester United

Certainly looking like the Arseââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s declining performances are continuing halfway through the season. Relying on a defender to score the winner in a game against a team like Portsmouth (no disrespect to them) isnââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t really what you'd call the mark of champions who are hoping to retain their crown. I always knew theyââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢d slip up this season but I wasnââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t expecting it to be so early.

whilst i agree it looks like arsenal are slipping at the moment.. pompey beat us.

Trouble is I can see Chelsea loosing too many games this season.. if we have a strong second half to the season we should get second

Yeah but we're not trying to retain anything. We're established champions whereas Arse have yet to show any long-term championship material, just as I predicted last season.

ok get your point now...if they don't finish this season as champs I can see a few players leaving.. Viera only stayed because Real didn't offer him enough money in the summer... if they come back in with a new offer he could go as well

It seems that Rooney is being targeted by the press once again, as he is now a Man Utd player.
His slap in the face to the Bolton defender is all it was, but I suspect Rooney will be heavily fined or given a 2/3 match ban
Quote:

Sir Alex Ferguson has branded Tal Ben Haim a disgrace and claimed the furore surrounding Wayne Rooney should not be allowed to mask the Bolton defender's attempt to get the England striker sent off.

Re: [Merged] Football talk

To be fair - he intentionally struck another player in the face - he should have gone off for that, no question about it. SAF really needs to crack down on Rooney's lack of discipline now.

However Haim should also have action taken against him for play acting. In an interview to the BBC he said..

Quote:

when Rooney hit my face I genuinely fell down out of instinct
...which, apart from being the most lame defence I've ever heard, proves he can not be trusted in a game as he will 'instinctively' drop to the floor under any contact in the game. Does 'instinct' also dictate staying on the ground as well?

Charge him with bringing the game in to disrepute for that and let's see a ban.

Both parties are charged
What a shame :erm: the thug and the play acting faker are both being charged by the FA. Maybe it will help Rooney realise that he has to either calm his temper down or at the very least make it a little less obvious next time ;)

Russ 29-12-2004 18:57

Re: [Merged] Football talk

Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m glad both were charged and Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m quietly hoping Haim will get more of a punishment as heââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s admitted his instinct is to hit the floor and pretty much stay there. He should be used as an example to players who play act to get people like Rooney sent off.

Yeah, I do have to admit that Rooney was the first person that I'd ever seen do that on the pitch, so he should have been hung, drawn and quatered. :erm:

Just because you don't like him, doesn't mean that he should not get a worse punishment than any other player who does the same and other players have done it before.

Before you say anything, I do believe that he should have got punished for it and got what the rules state as the correct punishment.

but maybe the rules are too lenient , how about a 10 game ban or something like that , it would make them think more than twice about doing something like that again :disturbd: :disturbd: :disturbd: :disturbd: , nip it in the bud sort of thing :tu:

Yes that's fine it might make them think twice before doing it, but it happens throughout football, it's not just Rooney (and I don't mean that that makes it okay either, it's still wrong). That's what annoyed me :tu:

couldnt agree more , i am not pointing the finger at rooney , just making the point that if the punishment was more severe then the likelihood of it happening would lessen over time :)

the thing is we have had 2 players tried by video this season and i don't see the same thing happening to the Arse or Chelsea..

As for the Bolton bloke he admitted to diving and should be kicked out of football. It's a game played by sportsmen and that wasn't a sporting act. The FA, UEFA and FIFA should be looking into these things. Where's the comments from that stupid Blatter about this

Whoa, that's harsh

Diving's a part of football. If caught in the game - yellow carded, no more. If caught on camera after the game NO ACTION should be taken.

Im sick to death of players getting reprimanded after a games took place. What happens in a game should stay in a game... if the ref misses it, it should mean the players got away with it. That's how it used to be, and thats how it should be now.

The only thing cameras in footy stadiums should be used for is to allow people to watch it on TV and to control the crowd, nothing more.

Technology is ruining football.

Yeah, I see what your getting at.

With the amount of money involved in football these days - I guess consistancy is needed in the big games. Money ruining football, yet again.

Not sure how everyone missed it but i think Carroll helped with his reaction to just keep on playing..

Despite all our possession and shots we still didn't really unlock the door and Robinson only had a few saves to make. Still think we need to get another playmaker in midfield.. Keono looks back to his best but Ronaldo is only really a wingr and not great when he comes inside. Scholes is starting to get abit old now and we need someone else who can break teams down.

With all the injuries to the other strikers was expecting Smith to show his early season form and get a few hattricks and cement his place in the side. Fraid as a loan striker he hasn't been outstanding in the last few games. Don't think we would have done any better with Rooney playing either.

With the arse drawing we had a chance to close the gap to second instead we threw it away and let Everton come back at us

Anyone remember the goal Sparky "scored" when he was playing for Southampton?

He hit a cracker which went flying into the net, hit the advertising hording right behind the net and came flying out again, the ref played on.

Losing Giggsy is what cost us the win. He could be out for 6 weeks :(

don't remember it but i remember the Dell ground with the very short nets behind the goal so doesn't surprise me.

Loosing Giggs would have been ok if we had some depth in the squad.. Bellion isn't good enough for Man U and I don't think he ever will be. We only have one striker now in Smith.. DOn't know why Rossi or someone from the reservers \ youth team hasn't stepped up to the first team if we are short of strikers..

Although Giggs has been playing well over the past few games he still missed a one on one with the keeper against Bolton and what about all the other games we have played since 99. It just shows he hasn't been performing and at his age is prone to injuries which is why he should only get a one year extension

Self centred the lot of you ;) Just think what Spurs fans must be feeling like, they must feel like they were mugged last nite.

I thinks you need a new keeper in Jan give 'boro' 2 million and you can have one  and 15 mill for Mr Downing as a replacement for Giggs :)

Re: [Merged] Football talk

We have no need for a new keeper, we are covered in that area.

Here is a question - How many league games have Man Utd lost when Carroll has been in goal.

:erm: i think you will find that ferguson wants a new keeper and will be doing his level best to get one in Jan, as he has no faith in the 2 you have and last night would of reinforced that view i have no doubt! ;)

How do you know that? Are someone who Sir Alex confides in? Or are you just going on quote less media reports?

Carroll has only ever lost two league games for Man Utd. Nothing wrong with that form.

Schwarzer has made mistakes in the past, ever keeper has, what if he is signed by Man Utd and he makes a mistake, will we go and look for someone else to buy?

We need to stick with our keepers, Carroll and Howard are perfect for us, we don't need anyone else. I'm sure Fergie knows that and thats why I'm pretty confident no keeper will be purchased in January.

Keepers make mistakes just like any other player. Decisions like last night's happen, we can't argue over it too much although had it gone against us in a game with someone like Chelsea then I'd probably be furious too.

sherer 05-01-2005 14:52

Re: [Merged] Football talk

i must abit i'm not very confident when Carroll's in goal. yes his stats are very good but then hehas one of the best defences in the league in front of him. Any keeper, even Spironi the ex keeper at my other club Palace, would have a half decent record playing behind Rio.

I think we do need a keep and Carroll showed last night he isn't a number one. He's made quite a few mistakes, the one he made last night was not trapping the ball and then passing to a teammate, he then compounded that by not getting his body behind the ball.

Howard is a good keeper and just needs to learn how to deal with crosses and corners better.

 At the end of the day if you want to win thorpys this season you need a new keeper :) I don't care who you get i would like you to get Mr Jones from brook street rather than 'boros' keeper

but i will leave the utd fans to their thread

Love to know how you work out that we need a new keeper to win trophies considering we won the FA cup last season with Howard and Carroll.

And the premiership in 2003 with Carroll.

Even Jol said he was happy with a draw in the Sky interview at the end of the match. Spurs made very little attempt to actually win the match, 8/9 man defence, offside trap. Robinson and King played very well. Just think, if video evidence had been in use last year then Jose may not have become the Chelsea manager as Porto would have been out of Europe in the quarter finals.
Even so I could not believe what I was watching, Caroll didn't even manage a knock on, the dozy plonker.

people forget that Man U have had decisions go against them in the past..

also Arsenal would have lost to Pompey as the Pires dive for the pen wouldn't have been given

At work today, i has to skim read the xmas edition of the BMJ and my eye was drawn to this article ;)

Can the human eye detect an offside position during a football match?

The xmas issue is renowned for it's frivolous items based on real scientific research/evidence....... and i thought it might help you guys in your arguments when you screech........ THAT WAS NEVER OFF SIDE!! at the tv/ref :D

Some people just have nothing better to do....... and i'll leave it up to you to decide who i'm referring to ;)

Re: [Merged] Football talk

FA release statement

An FA spokesman after the game absolved the linesman of any
responsibility
for the apparently mistaken decision not to award a goal to Spurs after
a
shot from the halfway line crossed the goal line by at least a metre.

"The shot came in from an unusual distance and as such caught the
linesman
out of position forcing him to race back towards the goal as the play
developed", explained the spokesman, "As he ran, the United scarf he was
wearing under his shirt came loose and fluttered up into his face
obscuring
his view and preventing him from making the call. It was just one of
those
things."

In response to further questions from the Press the spokesman explained
"If
they don't already have a United tattoo most officials on game day try
to
wear a scarf or a replica shirt under their regulation kit to show their
support for the worlds greatest club. The linesman in this case had
chosen
to wear a United scarf, a common choice that is in keeping with FA
guidelines. The root cause of the problem lies not with the linesman but
with the players and management of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club who
broke one the most important unwritten rules of the English FA: They
placed
a shot on target at Old Trafford. Martin Jol is new to this country and
perhaps he s not yet familiar with some of our finer traditions.
Fortunately if he doesn't yet understand that for the greater good of
the
game visiting teams, by tradition, are not expected to try to score at
Old
Trafford then our officials are in a position to help Mr Jol make that
cultural adjustment."

Chuckling to himself the FA spokesman added "The goal had to be
disallowed
to avoid us descending down a slippery slope that would be bad for the
national game. It's a fine line the officials have to walk. If they
award a
goal this week, next week someone might expect a penalty or ask that Van
Nistleroy be booked for diving. Can you imagine? That would just never
do.
No no no. Shocking, just the thought of it."

Re: [Merged] Football talk

i can't believe some of the comments over this "goal". It's thw worst referring decision of all time apparently. Not fogetting the Hurst goal that took a world cup final to extra time. The missed goal from Chesterfield v Boro for a place in a FA Cup final. The Maradona goal that cost England a place in a world cup final. The dodgy decisions that went for South Korea in the last world cup.

Come on this has happened before and will happen again.

Just because it is Man U everyone is saying Carroll should be banned and the result overturned. I think if this happened in a Luton Town match i don't think the reactions would be the same

Thats to be expected. Of all the international competitions I can remember the host nation has always got the benefit of the doubt in decisions.

It was a pretty bad decision, maybe not the worst, but up there.

Actually, you're right - I don't think that this is the worst decision by a ref. At the end of the day, the linesmen are there to help the ref is unsighted, out of position etc. What I think this is is the highest profile one for a while and, it must be said, an absolute howler of a mistake, when the ball was a good yard over the line.

One of the issues in my mind is what's the point of the fourth official? I know he's there in case the ref gets injured, but why can't he advise the ref in cases like this - all in all, it's a good case for some form of technological back up.
