Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

Virgin's policy of not forking out for supposed 'minority channels' is gonna end up biting them in the a**e, be it Premier Sports, Boxnation, Sky Atlantic, as more and more of these 'minorities' will jump ship, and their numbers will soon add up.

VM made hundreds of millions in selling their Virgin 1, Living and Bravo channels as well as their share in UKTV - stick some of that into getting content (and that's channels we DON'T have just now, not +1 or even HD versions of channels we do have) and they'll do a far better job of keeping customers.

Once they've got that then they can highlight the benefits of Tivo and On Demand (both of which they are currently having big technical issues with which doesn't help).

Let's be honest in the UK our 4 main sports are Football, Rugby, Cricket and Boxing. Premier Sports have tried their best to secure as much Football, Rugby, Boxing and MMA rights as possible. Also for the petrol heads they secured NASCAR and Swedish Speedway. I'm not trying to wee all over the NHL, or anyone who follows hockey, however trust me this will not change Virgins view on the channel. Virgin view Premier Sports as a niche channel, carrying niche content.

Over the past 12 months there has been various campaigns run on boxing forums, boxing websites and boxing torrent sites to bombard Virgin with demands for the channel to be added. Similar campaigns have been run by fand of the Blue Square Premiership too.

The only way we'll see Premier Sports on Virgin is if they land the rights to screen major football such as Europa League or FIFA World Cup qualifiers. It's football content that sells. Look how quickly ESPN turned up on Virgin after securing the rights to screen 46 Premeirship games and 30 SPL games. Would ESPN be on Virgin without their British football content?

I think you're spot on Chad

It would appear that VM's Sky Anytime does not include HD movies.

One things that I can't understand is why Premier Sports, who have been up and running for about 16 months now, haven't bothered to set-up an on-line subscription service. You'd think it would be beneficial to them to allow non-SKY customers the chance to watch their channel, even though it'll be via an on-line stream. I'm sure fans of NHL, NASCAR and their other sports would consider paying £5.00 per month for an on-line version of the channel.

In fact when I think about it, it's concerning that they don't have an on-line model. Maybe Premier Sports aren't in it for the long haul and are just having a punt like Setanta Sports. Virgin might not be interested in carrying the channel as they've sniffed it out as a tin pot channel.

Oh well, if you subscribe to SKY Movies HD you'll either need to watch or record the movie you want to watch in HD instead. Don't worry, the film your after will be repeated about 12 times during any calendar month!

Oh well thought it was too good to be true! I can't say I ever bother with VM's On Demand offering, and I thought this one may be the one to make me use it. As stated elsewhere, just a case of making more use of that 1Tb drive - would have been nice to have it on tap though.

I'm pretty sure we will be getting Sky Movies in HD. The press release here directly contradicts the one above http://mediacentre.virginmedia.com/S...line-21da.aspx. If you scroll down to the small print it clearly states the Sky Movies channels and their HD variants. We'll soon find out which press release is correct.

I think the Sky Movies HD stuff will come but just not yet. I have a feeling sticking 500 Movies in HD on the headends is a technical challenge ;)

So the article is about what you can get NOW (for instance it makes no mention of Sky Sports Anytime), the Press Release is everything that will be coming

Maybe the HD versions will only be available to customers paying the premium HD charge. Today's link could in theory be missing a bullet point stating this. Lets hope so.
