That was a class match.

I was watching it (I kind of support Croatia after England) and i thought... oh no not 9 men... and then realised Poll hadn't actually sent him off despite showing him the 2nd yellow. Simunic was walkin off and Kovac stopped him and he went back on :LOL:

Before arguing with Poll who had probably realised (after play has resumed, the ref has finalised his decisions) in the last minute after a disallowed goal (for Aus) and getting his 3rd yellow card (and red).

Would have been funny if he'd scored the winner.

Anyway, 7 Aussie squad members have Croatian ancestry and 3 Croats (Simunic, Seric and Didulica - reserve keeper) were born in Aus. Sweet...

To be fair, I think the match should be void because a player was not sent off and should have been. (Not because it gives Croatia a 2nd chance lol)

heard about this but not seen any video of Poll doing both bookings but saw the one after the final whistle.. are we sure he booked the bloke the first time.. usually when you get booked a second time you walk off before you even get the red card shown

just checked the FIFA match report

Also, at some point the commentators were saying that their monitors (with the official FIFA stats) showed an earlier yellow for Simunic (who showed have been sent off in the earlier Aussie penalty appeal anyway).

Edit: Just saw your edit. I didn't see the first half, so I can't be sure. However, I wouldn't put it past FIFA to not include an earlier booking in the match report in order to save face.

I watched the game. He was booked twice, 61 and 87/88, then not sent off, then booked 93 and shown the red.

you'll probably find that Adidas have that in their contract with FIFA plus each ball as the teams and time of kick off on the ball so i think the directors like to show that off or are told to do that

There's some controversy over Switzerland's second goal. A Switzerland player passes it to another player, who is deemed offside by the linesman (the flag is up). A Korean player however, has touched the ball before it reaches the player in offside position. That player scores, and the referee awards the goal. This is all in the final third, so there is not a lot of space.

Should it stand or not? I would think that when the ball is passed to a player in offside position and the flag goes up, play should stop at that point, and the Korea player touching the ball is irrelevant. The decision is about the moment the ball leaves the passer's foot. Not what happens after that.

As the original pass was a square ball it looked to me as if the linesman thought a Swiss player passed to Frei rather than it coming off a Korean.
Anyway, Frei was onside when the original ball was played. Good decision by the ref.


FIFA's new idea is that a player should only be flagged offside when he receives the ball.

As the expression goes, play to the whistle.
