There (properly) won't be a hardware update till Jan 09 now, but Apple may well introduce a 32gig version before Christmas..

I hope that there is an upgrade policy, otherwise $199 isnt too bad as long as there is not a massive UK rip-of charge.

According to Gizmodo, if you buy a new iPhone, you need a new contract but it will overwrite your old one. Also, if you bought an iPhone after 27th May, you get a free upgrade.

Let's hope they introduce the same in the UK, and give us the rip-off uk prices soon (and hope they not too much of a rip-off)

Some interesting info about the US pricing and activation.

1. Can go with any standard plan for AT&T (so presumably O2)
2. Can only activate in store

Interesting news for unlockers....

On preventing unlocked phones, De la Vega said customers can't leave AT&T stores without activating their iPhones. AT&T and Apple are working on a form of penalty for users who don't activate their iPhone within 30 days of purchase.

This makes sense, I heard before that AT&T were no longer sharing the income from contracts with Apple, and in return were paying more for the phones. They properly do not want to pay for each handset only for the phone to be unlocked...

Can the iPhone play macromedia flash videos, unlike the itouch?

Existing iPhone customers can upgrade early to the new 3G iPhone for free*

To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we're offering you an early upgrade to the brand new version when it launches on 11th July 2008. You won't have to wait until the end of your existing contract, all you'll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract.

*Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 Pay Monthly tariffs for iPhone. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff. This special early upgrade offer is only available online at o2.co.uk anytime from 11th July until 11th October 2008.

Take a look at our new Pay Monthly tariffs for iPhone.

Then just register your interest opposite and we'll drop you a line in early July to tell you what you need to do to be one of the first to get your hands on the new 3G iPhone.

Don't need 2 iPhones!

We want to make sure you find a good home for your existing iPhone once you upgrade. If you've a friend or family member already on an eligible O2 tariff, they'll be able to transfer to one of our new tariffs for iPhone. If they're not already with O2 or on an eligible O2 tariff, they could get one of our new iPhone Pay & Go SIM cards.

Unlikely. Apart from the phone features. it uses the same system software. I think the reason is that Apple do not allow any program running on the iPod/iPhone to run any compiled or interpreted code, which is also the reason why Sun have not released Java (although they are apparently ready to, they don't have permission).

You will be waiting a while for the headless chickens, er I mean managers at O2 to decide on an upgrade policy. It took them ages to sort out upgrades, MNP (Porting) and email set up when the original was released.

They apparently set up a 'war room' for unsolved problems and the like. Us customer service advisors, assumed that there would be a bunch of gurus in there sorting the problems out. Guess what? Nope there wasn't. It was nothing but an email inbox where the issues were passed to iPhone super advisors. The super advisors knew nothing at all. Most of the normal customer service advisors came to me for help. Lol :)
