Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015)

If Virgin had something that let you watch recorded programs from your TIVO on your mobile and laptop they would be shouting about the fact. This is the kind of function that people would subscribe to Virgin for.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015)

As MB posted
EXCLUSIVE: Virgin Media to launch new app for TiVo from tomorrow
Virgin Media sources has told Media Boy HQ that Virgin Media have developed a cloud based mobile app for TiVo set to launch starting tomorrow (April 23rd).

As it stands this app will allow you to from April 23rd-

Stream to a TV that has a Chromecast dongle connected.
Capture clips from TV and upload to social media.

To launch later in 2015:

Watch your recorded programmes from your TiVo box.
Watch and rewind/restart every live channel you are subscribed to, even ones without a catch up service.

The app does not allow you to do any of these things, so I'm I missing something

Its just the cloud app like a Dropbox, google drive alternative, that has been out for months on pc, iOS and android.

Which only allows you to upload files i.e pictures, music, video (not TiVo recorded content)

So nothing new here, its just TiVo has been added were you can view it on TiVo nothing more a bit like the other app were you logged on to various social media sites to view on the TV.

So the question is, in that quote were is the other features of this app.

---------- Post added at 08:04 ---------- Previous post was at 08:02 ----------

Where can you capture clips?, I have re read saying other features late 2015, but neither stream to Chromecast.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015)

Agree there is nothing new apart from now on TIVO so you can view your virtual storage on there as far as I understand it, the app has not changed

You are missing the fact that VM didn't announce any of these things.

Are these features on the roadmap SP or can't you say?

I appreciate the point your making that VM hasn't actually announced anything so we could be getting hopes up false information and wrongly blaming VM

I don't know what is planned. I'm not involved in the apps. (Of course, if I was involved, I still couldn't tell you :))

Its not bad information, the app is for virgin media cloud its basically making the tivo box into dlna system where you can view videos, music and pictures from the cloud. This is a big improvement from virgin.

But what about streaming Tivo recordings to computers and mobile devices; that was the headline part for most people, and what I was enquiring about.

Video file take a lot of space, so adding videos to VM's cloud would just be economically impractical, given their charges. One ripped film, from a DVD takes over 6GB.

I'm of a similar opinion Den that said you'd be surprised how much research is conducted into these pop up channels so the majority of feedback must be favourable otherwise they'd stop.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015)

Yes, but these are NOT NEW CHANNELS are they, just a rebrand or HD.

liberty global or VM have got to give the customer NEW channels that are out there, and l am not just talking about SA.

It was funny as l was approached by a VM sales rep in our local supermarket. I said that l wasn't happy at the choice that Sky have, and VM.

I mentioned SA, he said that a contract is due between Sky and VM along with other channels coming soon.

Why does VM wait for a contract to be renewed, before a new channel can be announced.

When l was in USA a couple of years ago, there was a brilliant golden old channel that showed some brilliant American shows, that we have had over here.

We have GOLD, but we should have channels like that

Stephen 28-04-2015 23:07

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015)

Its still a new channel on the VM platform.

Contracts are there with Sky in particular as there are agreements and a lot of complications now, due to On Demand and streaming among other things.

Its not just a simple case of here, have this channel.

With Sky closing one of their arts channels and 3d channel and moving the remaining Sky arts channel to Sky2's position on the Sky EPG, that would be a good time for VM to rejig their EPG too. So, channel moves and launches may all happen around that time.

9th June seems to be a day to keep an eye on.

I think they could make do with just one channel for all the Sky Arts 1 and 2 programming, given all the repeated material. We don't have to lose out as a result of one channel closing, IMO.

Big centre tv? I can hardly contain the excitement. Still some people may be pleased to have it. I do wish the focus would be on launching the main stream and hd channels we are still missing.
I dont know the complexitys of testing to launch but it seems to be quite a long time.

You shouldn't read too much into these tests. As we know from previous tests, the purpose of them are to test the video and audio quality of the transport streams.

You might recall when History HD was "testing" a few years ago and we all thought that was going to launch then..... it didn't.

There would be no testing stopped because a broadcaster has pulled out, the two things are not linked. Tests go on all the time and if you were to believe the hyperbole from VM, talks are ongoing all the time, which of course they're not.

If deals have been done with a broadcaster, the channels would launch. We'd get no warning, either way.

We have seen Eurovision tests on one of them.

Other one is from BT.

FIFA Women's World Cup is also being shown live on the Beeb this summer.

UEFA under 17 Football is on Eurosport with Under 20s on BT Sport.

surely virgin media already have bt under contract for another year so we'll get it for free?? or will bt squirm their way out of it and demand more money?

how depressing.

This thread continues to frustrate me. Absolutely pointless channels testing. Nothing which would cost VM too much money due to arrive. Bring back 2013. A fine year on this place!

Well Vince, look on the bright side. With Sky Arts 2 and Sky Living It going down, maybe there will be enough money in the VM vaults for another Sky channel that is currently denied to us.

On the face of it, this sounds like an improvement for the remaining Sky Arts channel that will be broadcasting on 9 June. I hope the new content doesn't disappoint.

http://www.rapidtvnews.com/201504303...#axzz3YtQiuXMr

1,000 hours of VOD content, new EPG slot for new Sky Arts

As it ramps up its on-demand offerings across its entire portfolio, the UK's leading pay-TV provider is to launch Sky Arts with over 1,000 hours of dedicated programming and a new EPG place.

Claiming to reflect the way customers consume content, and representing a 'step change in the channel's ambition', Sky Arts On Demand will not only offer customers over 1,000 hours of dedicated arts programming, but will also introduce exclusive new on-demand only content, commissioned or acquired especially for the service.

The channel will now move up the electronic programme guide (EPG), where it will consolidate into a single 'super channel,' to reflect an overall programming budget increase of 10%. "At Sky we believe the arts are for everyone ... We know that a lot of our content appeals to genre enthusiasts, and the feedback from our customers tells us that they want to find the stuff they love in one place," commented Sky Arts director Philip Edgar-Jones. "With that in mind, we have looked at our offering to make sure customers can more easily find the content they are passionate about. With our new on-demand service alongside what we think is the strongest line-up of programmes yet, we think the new look Sky Arts will genuinely offer something for everyone."

If vm don't pay the asking they don't get it it's as simple as that, no squirming about it.
VM contract with BT i imagine was only for the exsisting channels not any new channels, BT paid a lot for cl rights so they should be able to demand more money to carry the extra channels.
Sadly with SKY and BT overpaying for rights there is only one loser and that is the consumer, money has destroyed football imo.
However VM need to learn to pay up or shut up, no doubt they'll be whining to ofcom about any new charges, if vm want football so bad they should bid for it.
Sorry for the rant lol.

Really, they should leave the choice to the viewer if they can't get a decent deal. If viewers are prepared to pay over the odds for certain channels, why not let them? It's no skin off VM's nose.

Given that we can't even have Spike, I do wonder if VM overdo it a bit in specifying how much they are prepared to pay. Other platforms have it, after all.

It frustrates me even more about VM channel packages, They should let the viewer decide what cahnnels we want. As at the end of the day - ITS US THAT END UP PAYING FOR IT.

Its like Sky have increased the charge for sports, so they pass it onto us.

Its about whoever runs VM, they should put us FIRST

I'm afraid it doesn't work like that you need to have the crap to get to the good.
The crap channels are what keeps the costs down, if we all chose our own channels no doubt the price would sky rocket.
Why shouldn't vm customers get price rises when everyone else does?
It's the way the biscuit crumbles it will get much worse before it gets better, i personally am glad i'm well rid of vm and sky.
I technically do have bt as bt own plusnet lol plus my mobile is with BT.

no i doubt we are old boy but the worrying thing is theyre free channels. they wont be asking for much to come onto vm. so the urgent questions are

1) why are we not getting freeview channels?
2) why do vm appear utterly keen to spend no money
3) why are prices going up for little to no additional services

these are the things bugging me at the moment. i feel we arent being told something about virgin media currently. something is fishy with their actions

What the hell is happening at VM? This thread used to be buzzing with excitement and now when I come on everyday or two the most exciting thing possibly coming soon is some random local TV channel in the Midlands and only half a dozen or so posts.

Roll on July when my plan is to leave and Sky here I come for half price TV with Sky Atlantic and all the new channels from the start. :)

Hold your horses a bit mate you may get a better offer of Sky they rang me this afternoon offering 75% off for 12 months, i declined because i'm sick of virgin blaming sky, sky blaming virgin lol, but mostly because i'm happy with online tv.

@MB could one of vms testing channels be talking pictures? Just seen this on DS http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2067597

There is no such thing as 'free channels'. The channels may be advertiser rather than subscriber funded, but there are still significant costs in distributing them over and above production and content. It's not just a matter of someone pressing a button.

I assume in practice the money often flows the other way - the channels are expected to pay VM to carry them, just as they have to pay transmission and access costs for carriage on terrestrial TV.

It may be they are unwilling (or can't afford) to pay what VM charge for distribution over and above what they may be paying for transmission on Freeview and Sky.

Thanks theone but I might have not been 100% clear, currently have VM TV and switching TV to Sky so I think 50% off will be the best I'll get. Still pretty good though as I'll get everything with them for a couple of quid more than I pay just for Sky Sports on VM. I won't get BT Sport but not that fussed, the one thing I will miss is the third tuner but with all the VOD these days, not as essential anymore.

Can understand your views on them blaming each other though. Both are to blame for their endless profiteering! ;)

We think BT Sport (We hate to say it) will become an add on Channel - Like Premier Sports - by 2017.

We think will reuse the money save on the BT Sport deal and go after new channels from Sky, Viacom, Sony and Universal.
