Evening all, hope you're all well. Just been reading up on the new Tivo firmware that is being rolled out imminently. I've read that the new apps will be HTML5 and that at some point soon there will be an app store. Anybody got any ideas if the upcoming WWE Network may be one of these apps when it launches in the UK on October 1?

This is a good idea. The reward for 2nd and 3rd should be the same as that for 4th, not 1st. Would make the League Title all important once again and improve the quality of teams in the Champions League proper. I really like this idea.

As already been pointed out we don`t know what`s in the contract between virgin and bt so it`s all speculation as to whether we will be charged more once the champions league games kick off on bt. My opinion is that it will stay as it is _ inclusive in the xl package. I say this because I think it will be in the current contract that any additional channels be included or Virgin will negotiate a new contract early will BT. Virgin see having BT Sport included in the xl package as a selling point so wont want to lose it.

How long do BT need to keep the ESPN branded channel? Surely this will become BT Sports 3 in the near future?

I would imagine it would be a three-year deal with the option to renew if both parties agree. I can't envisage they would have bothered to do the deal for just one year.

I agree, whilst some seem to like the idea of a BT Sport 3 as a "tidying up" exercise I think the ESPN brand has several advantages. ESPN certainly sounds like a more valuable channel than a BT Sport 3. And using the brand cannot be expensive as BT always has the option of using its own brand name.

You never told us that you'll be appearing on the Horror Channel at 22:45 on Sat night!

He never mentioned any other Viacom channels, but that doesn't neccessarily mean anything Africa Channel will be moving EPG numbers in a bid to increase viewing figures which have not been as high as expected since starting on VM.

Just checked and the Africa Channel is now on channel 289. The old number of 828 is now showing a slate saying that the channel has moved.

The slate doesn't advise people to reset any series links like it normally does; but I think I would be tempted to, as not doing so would surely result in a recording of the slate

Series links will be fine. They don't use the channel number. Each channel has a hidden identifier that never changes, and series links are based on that.

Wikipedia is now stating that 5*1 returned on 16 September as a Freesat exclusive. It's live on Freesat channel 132; Channel 5+24 is still on Freesat. I don't know if it ever left Freesat though. No mention of a +1 channel on Channel 5's website.

Thanks for letting us know this :) Maybe the previous slates i'm thinking of were for channels that had ceased broadcasting.

Cheers, it looks to me like they are rolling it out, starting with the platform that doesn't require much negotiation.

Hmmm, it also looks like they intend to keep 5+24 (at least in the short term) and that they regard 5*+1 as more important. That is unless 5* is on 131 on Freesat and they want to keep the main channel next to the timeshift variant.

its

105 Channel 5
128 Channel 5+1
129 5USA
130 5USA +1
131 5*
132 5*+1
133 Channel 5+24

I certainly watch 5+24 - does not bother me ' where it is ' just as long as I have the option

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3

I can see BT launch a BT SPORT 3 in addition to the current line up, purely based on the sheer amount of extra rights they have signed up since launch and to look more competitive to sky sports.

The VM deal was a 3 year deal and we'll certainly get our coverage for the first season of Champions & Europa League. A deal is a deal after all, plus ... UEFA has a bit of an issue with BT taking this it off terrestrial and BT have guaranteed that all British clubs featuring in the CL and EL will feature at some point on FTA, plus selected key games including the final. It will be interesting to see how they do this, perhaps a special flagship Channel like Sky1 but FTA (they were interested in buying FIVE after all). However the important thing is BT need to ensure the ratings are good to convince UEFA. So BT need to keep VM sweet, at least for year one.

For 2016/7 onwards the key factor will be the outcome of the next Premier League TV rights auction. City analysts have been basing forecasts on BT picking up 50% or more. If that happens then all bets are off!

.

It was doomed from the start as 3D is a niche product and nothing will change that.

Indeed, would be much happier seeing a bigger push to 4k content . Not that I have a 4K tv or anything.

I hope killing off 3D TV means the film industry knocks it in the head as well.

I was told a few months back (think I posted it on here) that no negotiations for this channel took place bètween SKY and VM as it is being "wound down".

Sky have since made it a part time channel and it has been suggested that Sky are performing a 'dignified exit strategy'.

In plain English they want to slowly phase it out hoping that nobody will notice that the almighty Sky actually made a mistake and were left with expensive egg on their face.

If done correctly and viewed with the correct equipment it can still cause a stir, everybody who has viewed certain blu-ray 3d disks on my setup have always been impressed, it's the cheap asses who buy half resolution LG & Samsung TV's that give it a bad name, in future when glasses free 3D is fully developed we will all wonder how we did without it.

While I'm not disagreeing that your setup is impressive or whatever, I genuinely don't know a single person that likes or prefers 3D at the cinema - where they presumably have the ideal setup with their IMAX projectors and THX sound?

I'm going to be slightly biased of course, as 3D doesn't actually work for me so my experience is lessened by having to pay more and wear a stupid pair of sunglasses that dull the film quite a bit. Still, (and yes I know it's anecdotal) my friends and family will veer towards a 2D screening if possible.

I like 3D and have always taken the opportunity to see big films in 3D wherever possible. Admittedly, I don't go the cinema a huge amount as it's so damn expensive, but I saw Avatar, Life of Pi & Godzilla all in 3D and they were all awesome.

I would love to watch 3D TV but I'm too damn tight to pay extra for it, so that may also be a reason why Sky are not getting the subscribers for which they might have hoped.

Ive got a pretty top of the range Samsung Smart 3D TV.

It's bloody awesome watching films in 3D. It's no more a faff than goinf to a 3D screening at a cinema. The other day Nemo was hanging about 3ft into my living room. My Nephew loved it...3D is great fun in it's place and thats film and documentary.

Thumbs up for 3D from me, just wish they would put put more on.

To help to get things rolling and add 3D content I would be open to let say £5 a month extra charge for 3D as long its good content.

I'm sorry to hear that 3D content has been causing you so much distress but some of us lesser mortals actually like it. :-) So keep it up industry please.

I think a lot of people actually go for 2D at the cinema because it's a lot cheaper including myself. Put 3D at the same price and things my change. I'll watch the 3D version at home on my super duper setup.

No need for the attitude there. But while I am certainly not going to deny that some people like it, I think it's fairly obvious that the majority of people don't.

Seriously, I cannot find a single online poll (scientific or not) that suggests 3D is anything more than a niche. I mean if you want 3D then it's your choice, but I don't really want to have to keep paying for it if I don't want it.

I believe that 3D is not popular because of the glasses and people sometimes feel a bit dizzy or sick when viewing through them.

Personally, I'm looking forward to holographic TV, which I think will be really cool!

VM are now the only platform to my knowledge that have said that they are committed to 3D (via VOD).

Has the VM 3D VOD library improved over the last few months? I'm really just trying to gauge if they kept to their word or not (or if there just isn't the material available to show).

No they are not , Sky puts some of its 3D content on its On Demand service. Sky are stopping its 3D sports coverage which is understandable when you consider its probably costing the most with only minimal amounts of people watching.

The Sky 3D channel will continue for the time being with documentary and movie content , at any point they could quite easily move this content to On Demand only.

I've never understood the mindset to knock a firm for trying something I'm sure its not the first service they've canned I seem to remember a music service , with the right content 3D is excellent however sadly there's been a lack of this I guess the glasses are also an issue for some.

To my knowledge Sky have not given any recent statements regarding their commitment to 3D (be it VOD, linear or otherwise), whereas VM have committed to a 3D VOD service.

My contact seems to believe that the days of the Sky 3D channel are numbered.

I'm not knocking them for trying something new, i'm knocking them for their arrogance as a company and complete inability to admit mistakes without spin. My contempt for this company is such that I gain pleasure when learning that something has gone wrong for them.

Many of their own customers have complained that Sky will never admit mistakes or apologise properly, even when it is undoubtable that it is Sky who are at fault. Instead letters dripping with spin are received such as "we are sorry that you feel like this"; as if it is the customers fault for feeling unhappy that they have been wronged by Sky!

The huge difference being Sky weren't just buying another broadcasters 3D content to add they shot live footage and broadcast a channel pretty expensive if viewing figures are low.

As for a commitment from Sky I've only seen the following
Quote:

A spokesman for Sky said: "Sky 3D viewers tell us they love the channel. We’re being more selective with what we chose to broadcast on Sky 3D, with a focus on movies and entertainment such as the Oscar-winning Gravity 3D and David Attenborough’s latest 3D documentary series coming up at Christmas."

But it wasn't a mistake, Richard, it just didn't catch on. Sky should be congratulated for embracing new technology to bring an innovative service to its viewers. I certainly wouldn't criticise them for that, and they shouldn't be embarrassed at all.

Spot on, probably just a little too early and companies needed time to truly refine the technology so that additional phericals were not required

It is good that they gave new technology a chance, but investing in new technology that failed to take off was a business mistake. The knack is to foresee what will be successful and what won't be in the future.

Instead of admitting this (and everybody makes bad decisions at times), they seem to be trying to discreetly rid themselves of the 3D channel by stealth.

Firstly, they tell VM that it is not up for carriage negotiation (even though Sky have tried unsuccessfully to increase it's viewing figures), then it is reduced to a part time channel and then we learn about the cessation of football coverage.

Ive tried watching champions league matches in sd back when we didn't get all the HD channels, some of the away matches are just unwatchable. Like you say i bet Kenneth Wolstenhulme will be commentating on some of them (I know he is dead).

Exactly, despite having a 3D TV downstairs it's hardly ever used, the kids have used it a few times to watch a movie but they rarely finish it with the glasses on.

The football to be honest wasn't even that good in 3D, nor the boxing and most movies I saw. It didn't add anything as far as I'm concerned, other people may have enjoyed it but not me. Never pay extra to watch in 3D at the cinema either, it's still the same movie with the inconvenience of wearing glasses and there is no extra wow factor.

That approach makes sense as the content does not age as quickly as live sport and can be re-broadcast several times.

The problem is that if they show channels in SD only it takes up a hell of a lot of room on your recordings! I only record the very best (ie my real favourite) stuff in HD so I can get everything on.

When they move all the boxes to cloud technology and you can record as much as you like, then they can start to decommission the SD channels!

I suppose that's a valid point, but then the box is more than capable of downscaling, they could add an update that only stores the HD broadcast in SD quality. Could even be a good way to clear some space without having to delete anything.

You're right though, Virgin already has a pretty good ondemand platform (I always thought they were missing a huge trick before Sky got into the ondemand game) and scaling that up to cloud storage would be a great thing to do, though I'm sure rightsholders would have a fit.

I don't know if this will come to the UK in November as the MGM Channel in the UK was never run by AMC (it was run by Sky) but long term this should surely come to the UK and VM. http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2014/...nch-in-europe/

....Possibly one of the CBS branded channels may turn into AMC as AMC Networks own 50% of the CBS channels here. But for that to happen, Viacom, who own the other 50%, would have to agree.

There is also the issue of programme rights as most of AMC's shows are shown by other broadcasters here in the UK. So, rights would have to expire before they could be shown on AMC's own channel.

The CBS-branded channels appear to be set for retention as CBS Reality has been launched on Freeview and CBS Action has acquired a Freeview licence. CBS is now independent from Viacom and if AMC wanted to launch its channel here I'm sure it could purchase the capacity.
I agree with you about programme rights, hence why the UK will probably get it after the other countres. But as AMC's flagship channel a version must surely come here at some stage.

Cheers for the info media boy. Cheers for creating another thread so that people who don't come into this thread can see the information.

Apologies yet again that our beloved admins come across so rude. I tried to get a friend on this forum once and he saw a message from one of our beloved admins and said "they're so rude and they don't even get involved in the conversation" and decided to not join

So thanks again!

Any news on trutv MB?

I agree.

This will probably get removed and i'll get a warning but this forum does seem a tad overmoderated.

What a good idea to create more space. I've also thought that, if it is technically possible, that the ability to weed out the adverts in recordings would be useful too.

Well, London Live is struggling and their request to decrease the amount of live programming to cut costs shortly after launching has been refused by Ofcom.

If our capital city cannot sustain a local channel, I very much doubt that any of the others will survive.

IMHO Hunts vanity project is dead in the water as predicted and the money wasted at a time of austerity could have been put to much, much better use.

There is quite a convincing argument that London is not like the rest of the UK and should not be seen as a reliable testbed for local TV. LondonLive is sensibly changing to target the readers of sister company the Evening Standard rather than the Janet Street-Porter type approach it initially went for. This may make well increase its success, it certainly should help reduce costs. It remains to be seen how well it does but we can't extrapolate the performance of one operator in an unrepresentative city to say that Local TV does not work.

Whilst there is no evidence at this early stage that the project is dead in the water, I am inclined to agree with you that it is a bit of a pet project. I would have preferred to have seen the money spent on retaining BBC3 on cable, terrestial and satellite platforms.

i think the trouble with local tv is what do they actually show? they arent funded enough to make actual original shows so any shows they make will look cheap. or do they just show rolling news footage?? but why would i want to watch news focused on liverpool 24/7?

Man buys pastie which looks like pope. Dog runs away from owner and kills duck.

there isnt enough news in liverpool to warrant a channel. will be interesting to see how they deal with it.

What i think could work for local tv is if they get involved with the local sports teams etc maybe show a sunday league match live, come to a deal with football clubs to show things like the u21s matches live etc, get more involved in the communities too.
Easier said than done i know but it could work.

So much history, culture and sport in Liverpool, there are opportunities there, plus the region has a very strong identity, it's really whether it can be done for the right quality and price. A channel there would probably neeed to collaborate with lots of other institiutions there like the Universities, music venues, museums, Tate, football clubs to make a success of it and to reduce costs.

My reasoning for viewing London as a testbed for the other local TV stations was that it has a high density of population and would be attractive to advertisers.

Why do you think that London cannot be compared to the rest of the UK?

Local TV catch up!!! I never even thought about that, this puts many of the smaller cable channels to shame for not having a catch up service at all.

Also, local TV stations are restricted to their target areas on both cable and satellite. The reason being given is that this is because of rights issues. Making programmes available via VOD makes a mockery of this (perhaps they only show content they have created themselves).
